It's a bear pit of a show. You can see the comics leaning forward, desperate to get their next word in, to riff off and top whatever the previous one has said... except when Milton Jones is on. He doesn't say much, but when he does, you can see everyone else relax, in the certain knowledge that (a) it's going to be completely off the wall and, importantly (b) they can forget about topping it or even getting onto the same planet. Jones is a genius. (Oliver rocks too, mind you...)
I never thought he was funny - I didn't realise that they just didn't show any of his funny stuff on Mock the Week! Completely changed my view of him.
He moved to america and is one of the writer and regular comedians of the daily show with john stewart, for which he won an emmy with the rest of the writing staff. He also has his own show similar to live at the Apollo with other stand ups. He is only known here for his regular podcast the bugle with the times online
John Oliver is one of the funniest people alive. A couple days ago I caught a glimpse of his "promo" for his new show on Comedy Central. He ends by gesturing to an auditorium full of people, saying, "This audience just watched an episode of my show," . He then asks the crowd, "Did you enjoy the show?" The huge audience responds, in unison, quietly, deadpan, "Yes." One of the funniest things I ever saw. Hope that someone will post it on youtube so I can see it again. Genius! Yes. Indeed.
@midwifecat I was in that audience! That taping was legendary. So much fun... he took questions from the audience. My roommate stands up and asks him what kind of skin care he uses (because she worked for a skin care line at the time and has a one-track mind), and he literally did not know how to answer her. After a while he said, "soap?" Absolutely baffled. I face-palmed.
In his last breath the tiger reaches up to the sky before sadly collapsing, fighting the owl who then desecrates his corpse.
Just the fact that Dara added that to his little mime show is hysterical: such a small gesture of character and tragedy in a silly mime thing about silly owls that won't make it into the edit anyway. It's all about imagination!
Ah sod it - they put our actors and comedians to better use than we do. The cream of US TV in the 2000s has grossly outweighed the number of good UK programmes. A sad fact, given how provocative our drama used to be here but true, nonetheless. And even the big budget fast food TV like 24 is far FAR better than something like
Not true. Half of these American programmes you speak of are from the LOST saga. That in itself hollows out the quality contingency that America might otherwise have boasted.
@PurushaDesa to be fair, they've also killed a lot of ours, life on mars for example, but I do agree that the best of theirs is undeniably good...oh the West Wing
WIthout a doubt. And it is annoying that they have to make 'The American Version'. Whatever we like of theirs we just fork out the cash and buy the episodes. They have to somehow translate things to their stars and their setting.
Life on Mars, Men Behaving Badly, Fawlty Towers (Jesus, that one was atrocious) that Australian sitcom Kath and Kim - why can't they just accept other countries have different styles of comedy to offer?
Oh, Dara's hand motions just killed me.

Is it me or does everytime someone says something long the lines of "that will never get past the edit", it always does.

@ultrapersonthing When it doesn't make it past the edit, you'd never know would you?

A great name for a potential show/novel/autobiography if ever I heard one.

Dara's owl vs tiger fight impression is actually featured in his new biological journal. Nocturnal Night Terrors. Chapter: Big Cats

Why is it such a good line up? Linda smith, John Oliver AND Jeremy Hardy. Had to have been an early episode before people hated going on it.
DonalLynchyou 1 year ago
@DonalLynchyou Do people hate going on it!? Why?
DottyDotDitto 1 year ago
@DottyDotDitto Many comedians say that it's really aggressive to get a word in and gets mercilessly edited down to a half hour show.
DonalLynchyou 1 year ago
@DonalLynchyou Really, wow. It looks so even pace and almost genteel, the power of editing I suppose. Thanks for the answer.

Mock The Week's strange now. Russell Howard is funny at times but since he became a regular on it it's gone downhill fairly quickly.
