I'm surprised that you are all so surprised. You are all used to artists who HAVE NO ABILITY TO SING IN THE FIRST PLACE, so you don't expect good singers to be able to sing live. Carrie Underwood is an actual vocalist, and a damn good one at that. Everyone else takes advantage of technology to help them create a voice.

she knew he was dead. they were supposed to get married when he got back and then she got the letter that told her he died.

the music video explains it, and kind of makes it seem like the funeral was held the day they were supposed to get married (but maybe not).
