He kept on saying how loud they were, but at live shows, they aren't THAT loud. Guitar players use 5150s turned to 5. They proved to me, that you don't have to be ear shatteringly loud, to be an epic, powerful doom band. Glad I got to play a show with these dudes.
@EddieVH66: in that case its surprising that he didnt talk about Grief, Corrupted or Burning witch when he was recommending this to fans of the genre burning witch is a big influence on the vocals of the band
@ninezones123 he actually does man from what I gather from his other reviews that is his favorite kind of metal and certainly the kind of metal he reviews most often.
But just real quick isn't Jesu's name pronounced with the J in more of a "y" type of a sound? Like it would be pronounced "yay-su"? Idk, I just heard it like that.
My biggest beef with metal these days is that nearly EVERY metal drummer seems to have the same drum kit with the same tuning and the same recording style.
Every drum (especially the snare and the bass) is EXTREMELY tight, and very muted so it ends up sounding like they are just hitting a tight piece of plastic, as opposed to hitting a head that resonates the tone of the woods.
As a drummer, I really cannot give any band more than a 4 or 5 out of 10 if they use that drumming style.
@supershiro34 Most bands I can think of probably aren't considered "metal" - I don't really bother with metal these days because almost every band I find has horrible drumming, and it drives me up the wall. The band Tool is an example of what drums SHOULD sound like. He uses an open mic technique that really lets the drums breath so you can hear the tonal qualities of the wood. Not just the dampened thwap! of a plastic head.
Thou are a great doom band, good to see you giving some promotion!
People who like Thou should definitely check Salome - they even did a split together. And the vocalist (Kat) has been in a Pig Destroyer song and is on ANb's Agorapocalypse - just to give the idea of greatness considering the vocals.
I have been wanting to pick something up from these guys for a while, and I have ignored them for a while, so I'm glad they came out with a new album.
Ive been listening to Thomas Gabriel Fischer's new project Triptykon through jumblejunkie and im pretty impressed with it, great production on the whole album
As far as doom goes I quite liked Full Of Hell by Howl and A Small Turn Of Human Kindness by Harvey Milk. But the standout releases of this year have to be Astrohenge's self titled debut and Cathedral's The Guessing Game. While both not pure doom albums, they take the doom template and do some really interesting things with it. Cathedral indulge in some old school prog rock goodness while Astrohenge have numerous ambient passages to break up the bruality.
0:33 i paused the vid to listen to the song. then I looked at ur paused face while I listened to the song. it was lulzy.
I think I might appreciete this kind of music if I gave it timet to grow, and I liked the guitars and stuff, but it was a little messy. It felt like the musicians where all playing a different song at the same time. Still waiting for the "Vektor-Black Future" of 2010.

@supershiro34 Some other bands that might be considered metal with better sounding drums are:
Dillinger Escape Plan, Grails, Shora, Tomahawk

@supershiro34 ah, I see. I don't play an instrument but I like hearing about how people tweak the sound. I'll start listening for this specifically
