Bette Davis should have won for What ever happened to Baby Jane....she was going to win but joan crawford pulled a few strings so that anne bancroft could win..and when they announced that anne won, Joan tapped betty and goes "excuse me, I have an oscar to accept".....Blagh..i hate joan crawford
Wow! Joan looks stunning. A true star! In 1945 she was sick (with nerves?) and didn't attend when she won for Mildred Pierce, but she ain't nervous here...ummm...happen because she knew she had a good chance of 'accepting' an Oscar in person when Miss Davis's name wasn't called. Clever Joan.
I love the moment of Baby Jane...Joan/Bette drama and so forth BUT
to me the biggest shock of this is that Katharine Hepburn DIDN'T win for Long Days Journey...as far as I'm concerned its the greatest performance in the history of cinema....and certainly a far more complicated and demanding role than the miracle worker
@theblueangel28 It does bother me Hepburn's work isn't mentioned much when bringing up the 1962 Best Actress Oscar race (usually the talk centers around Bancroft and Davis). I agree Hepburn is incredible in "Long Day's" and it's one of the top dramatic performances ever. Hepburn probably deserves at least the four Oscars she won, but I don't think she got them all for the right movies.
LMAO, gosh it was hilariously bitchy of Joan to rub that Oscar in Bette Davis' face. I love Joan, and I love Bette too! You didn't want to cross either one of them, they were fierce! <3
Joan was also angry at Bette for comments made on the Tonight Show where she feigned surprise at the runaway success of the film. "I didn't think anyone would pay a nickel to see two old broads". Crawford was reprted to have sent Bette a telegram admonishing her, in no uncertain terms, to refrain from referring to her as "an old broad".
bette davis went MAD when she didn't win, but the cherry of the pie was that joan took the oscar on behalf of anne bancroft. Joan is a bitch and i love it
@Marketoromagnolo I'm glad, because Faye was great, made it a cult. Joan accepted the Oscar because she wanted to dig at Bette Davis who did not win. I love Bancroft though.
@Marketoromagnolo Actually the Mommie Dearest director said that Anne had agreed to do it but wanted the script rewritten by Arthur Miller and they couldn't afford him.
@Marketoromagnolo the other reason Joan accepted the award was because Joan was campaigning against Bette Davis for the Oscar and asked to accept the Oscar to spite Davis.
Heh, that was the height of the catfight between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. Their hatred aside, this was, I think, one of the best Best Actress line-up EVER.
@libearian i was thinking the same, im a huge Bette Davis fan, i bet her face was a picture lol i read that she just froze in shock she was so certain she would get it, she deserved to get it imo, she would have been the first actress to get 3 oscars up to this point!
I remember the story behind this: Bette Davis felt she was about to receive her 3rd Best Actress Oscar for WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? but since Joan Crawford felt upset that she wasn't even nominated she campaigned to make sure Bette didn't win and told the other nominess who weren't gonna be present for the ceromony that she will accept the award on their behalf. Sure enough Anne Bancroft won and Joan pushed Bette aside to accept the Oscar as if the award was meant for her.
Joan Crawford actually called up Anne Bancroft in New York and offered to accept the Oscar for her so she wouldn't have to leave her current Broadway play. No wonder nominee Bette Davis and Joan's co-star in WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? never forgave Crawford. It cost Crawford her job in the later HUSH... HUSH, SWEET CHARLOTTE in 1964 when Bette insisted she should be replaced when she became 'ill' during the filming.
@msesq1 According to Wikipedia, Joan secretly contacted the other nominees to let them know she'd accept on their behalf if they couldn't come, and they all agreed. Both Joan and Bette were both backstage when the winner was called, and Joan brushed past Bette to accept. Bette, for the rest of her life, accused Joan of campaigning against her, which Joan denied.

Was the Mockingbird theme the main music cue of the night, or was it a part of "The Miracle Worker" ??
moonspinner55 3 months ago
@moonspinner55 It must've been in the movie, because when David Lean won the same night the Lawrence of Arabia theme was played.
jarred160788 2 months ago
@moonspinner55 Yes, it was used in "The Miracle Worker".

Joan could accept someone else's award but claimed to be too "sick" to accept her own when she won for Mildred Pierce.
