I agree that this movie was underrated and to most of the people who didn't like it, I don't think fully grasped the concept. On the one hand she did what she could in reality to escape the institution, and on the other hand she used her imagination to keep her sanity and survive the abuse and horror that she dealt with- to make it manageable. A brilliantly done movie.

I feel this was her way of owning and controlling her sexuality, when obviously in reality she is being sexually abused and not at all in control of it. Her fantasy world gives her a place to explore her power and be comfortable in her skin. I mean sure the movie attracted a lot of horny boys because of the skin but I feel it was much deeper than that.
