The technique he is using is called a memory palace, most people can learn the trick with the right effort and guidance. The way he is using it is similar to that of a card counter, only he is doing things a little different. It's quite clever actually.
Remember, the magician never reveals the true nature of a trick. This is a "dual reality" effect. This means the way we perceive it is different to the casino staff. they are ambiguosly described. in shock; he keeps winning; hes lucky. None of these pertain to the time he spent sitting down. He makes us believe its one long session by making this mystic story about memory tools, the casion believes he is merely lucky and suspicious. 80% showmanship
and the loci thing is merely a cover up for a simple answer. when certain cards come out he gives them a value and subtracts or adds to a baseline total. Cross referencing this total to a perfect blackjack strategy sheet that would have been previously memorised, gives him logical actions based on his totals. So he just waits till the baseline total of the deck being "hot" and jumps in then if it goes "cold" leaves and cuts the footage. clever cut and past but it fools all of us.
this is a simple effect. its just counting cards until the opportune moment presents itself then jumping in for 4 hands when the deck is "hot". he could have done this at multiple tables until he gets a successfull one, then scrubbing the rest of the footage. like his effect with the russian scam only worked 65% of the time and he woulod have chosen extremely suggestible and fairy brained individuals.
and i would also say that the casiono are the ones CHEATING and should be arrested for kicked out people out of the casino just for not losing enough.

@tothefly It's called the 'method of loci' where people chose a room or environment very familiar to them to assign words/numbers/cards/etc to the objects in those rooms. It is a very difficult technique to use effectively but it has been used for a good two thousand or so years so I trust it works ;)
Oh wow, I just read that he's been banned from all casinos in Britain. Though there are some other casinos like the publicity they get when he visits (as long as it's associated with one of his shows).
I guess there's no wonder why he would be banned. Still, it's kind of a shame.
This is completely fake, no one can do this, it is still chance because i count cards at casinos and its about when to bet and not to bet, you still lose. Also, you win in the long term, not the short term because you only get a marginal advantage over the dealer which is good considering most of the time your at a disadvantage.

Its IMPOSSIBLE to accurately read a shuffle of 4 decks. Basically he has taken the concept of card counting (estimating the probablity of cartain cards based on the frequency of previous cards) and tells you complete garbage about how he is super intelligent/psychic and using objects to remember cards (he also stole this idea).

At an rate, memory rooms are legitimate things. They're a very handy device for your memory capacity, because they're very effective at creating groups of objects, such as the 52 cards. The human mind can only remember about 5-7 objects without grouping them. That's why when you recite your phone number, you often group the first 3 and the last 4 digits. It's easier for you and everyone else to remember that way.

@9hello123 Counting Cards is very easy. You just have to be not drunk and can pay attention. It's always good to have a beer in your hand when you attempt to count cards. Also, counting cards is legal and you cannot go to jail for it. Some casinos, like I said before, have the right to ask you to leave if you're winning too much money.

The method of loci is genuine, but this is insane. To be able to picture all the objects and how many stickers are left on each one and keep track of all the cards... the pay-off would be worth it, but it would take a huge amount of concentration.

@franksy08 You couldn't use this technique to win the lottery because that's completely random, but when it's 4 packs of cards, you can figure out which ones have been dealt and which ones are left. He's banned from casinos because he would totally 'rinse' them.

card-counting methods usually involve keeping a running total in your head so that you know when most of the high cards have been dealt and it's therefore favourable to bet. That's how the MIT students did it in Vegas. Having said that, Derren Brown seems to be having sucess beyond what they achieved.
as you say, the method he describes would only put the odds in his favor....that doesn't explain this kind of success. I'm pretty sure the method he describes is not whats at play here....however, I have no idea how this is done.

Its IMPOSSIBLE to accurately read a shuffle of 4 decks. Basically he has taken the concept of card counting (estimating the probablity of cartain cards based on the frequency of previous cards) and tells you complete garbage about how he is super intelligent/psychic and using objects to remember cards (he also stole this idea).

At an rate, memory rooms are legitimate things. They're a very handy device for your memory capacity, because they're very effective at creating groups of objects, such as the 52 cards. The human mind can only remember about 5-7 objects without grouping them. That's why when you recite your phone number, you often group the first 3 and the last 4 digits. It's easier for you and everyone else to remember that way.

ok so whats the point of this? Yes counting cards is easy...but that doesn't at all explain why he hit a 16 vs a 6, not worthwhile in all but the worst decks for the player, and by doubling the 11 he showed that the count must have been positive. Did he bring in a cold deck? The only real explanation other than clever editing.

@9hello123 Counting Cards is very easy. You just have to be not drunk and can pay attention. It's always good to have a beer in your hand when you attempt to count cards. Also, counting cards is legal and you cannot go to jail for it. Some casinos, like I said before, have the right to ask you to leave if you're winning too much money.

The method of loci is genuine, but this is insane. To be able to picture all the objects and how many stickers are left on each one and keep track of all the cards... the pay-off would be worth it, but it would take a huge amount of concentration.

card-counting methods usually involve keeping a running total in your head so that you know when most of the high cards have been dealt and it's therefore favourable to bet. That's how the MIT students did it in Vegas. Having said that, Derren Brown seems to be having sucess beyond what they achieved.
