wow.... impressive! nice balance from band to vocals. powerful. i can see the pop art vision of maurice binder's tops of the parasols spinning on a lava backdrop.
I think she sounds like Shirley Bassey would have if she'd sung it.
I personally like Nancy more - they both do what they set out to do very well, but I like the innocence of the original, which I think the brassiness of this kind of dispenses with.
Great band and great soulful singers and great arrangements, it is not often, You hear slideguitar in big bands. I hope that a CD and DVD soon will be for sale from this great and original bigband.
As a big fan of James Bond film and music, I think this is sometimes better than the original tracks.
Same here! I just watched Y.O.L.T. for the umpteemth time and thought I've check out the music . What a delightful surprise to discover 007's own band!
No doubt British...?? ( only the Poms do it better for Bond).
Great performance! The nightclub atmosphere actually adds up to the nostalgia. This is the type of place where we might imagine Bond grabbing a Martini...and fall in love with the singer! Someone suggested America, but you could easily get a contract here in Japan I think for a series of performances. You should do some research about possible venues.
You should really put the horn section to use in the string intro though instead of using the synthesized strings. Synth strings always sound bad. Or even just do it all on piano. I know strings suit the instrumental perfectly and weren't just some coincidence in the original Barry arrangement, but you could really do something special here! You got the brass right there.
hey, thanx for the compliments...however, on a two hour gig we need a break! its such a big blow you know....i agree synth strings never sound as good as the real thing, but theres no real way around it when its live. anyway, i appreciate the comments....
Well thier is a bunch of rumors going around about who will sing in the next Bond movie, but i dont think that Justin Timberlake is. He wouldn't be good for the ones of what the story is about for right now. maybe later in bond films yes but now no.
I saw this in '66 at the drive-in with my parents(age 5),this was the beginning of my fascination with 'asian females & culture', now i know my I love the tune so much (because it is melancholy/mysterious/and beautiful) which really fits this James Bond Story. My favorite movie of them all! Strange Tom Jones sang 'Thunderball'! Should have been Shirley or Nancy!!
well, a couple of interesting facts for you then: thunderball was a last minute arrangement, chucked together after the producers weren't happy with the first effort "mr kiss kiss bang bang". MrKKBBB is the Japanese translation for James Bond & the original idea was to pay homage to that, but at the last min the Bond producers decided they wanted Thunderball in the song. It was so lat min, that is why all the incidental music in Thunderball is based around MrKKBB & not the Thunderball tune.
Also, it was in fact Frank Sinatra the producers approached to do You Only Live Twice, but he said "No thanks, but my daughter - she's a good singer". So they got her instead. She was very young an inexperienced and struggled with the piece. The melody is really difficult to sing and the final cut you hear on the soundtrack/records is about 30 takes all spliced together to get one decent one.
I really appreciate that 'information', I did in fact wonder how miss Sinatra was able to 'handle' that song. I do not expect she ever performed it live? That would be cool if someone had 'footage' of that!
i don't think she ever performed it live. in fact its not a song that is performed very often - and when it is, i have often heard it slaughtered! anyway, i've watched a few programmes about Bond music and researched alot when i was doing the arrangements for my band (above!) so thats how I know all this useless trivia! its good to be able to use it!....
I know you'll probaly feel "Coldplay" did possibly 'slaughter' this ?? But at least Coldplay are very good 'musicians'. I appreciate the idea of Coldplay doing the 'cover' because it brings the ssong 'to mind' again, and young people can go back and find the 'original'. I heard Justin Timberlake is to singing the next film.. is that correct?
By the way I appreciate the reply, and I meant no dis respect.. PS: there is a nice 'nylon/classical guitar' version on Youtube, wonder if you've seen it?
yes i know the coldplay version and wasnt talking about that - i think its really good. i worked with quite a few people who have worked with/supported coldplay and they all speak highly which is good enough for me! however, he does sing it in an easier key and style than the original. also, the nylon/guit vers is great & really well sung.
we do do it, but unfortunately it wasn't one of those that were videod (the company were only contracted to do 16 tracks & we play 27) shame as its such a great tune!
yes, it should be on here in a week or so along with You Know My Name and a couple of others. the video people were only contracted to do 16 of the numbers we do - we do 26 (ALL the title themes plsu a few extra) watch this space!
Alot of people assume Shirley Bassey sang this but strangly enough was 'Ole blue eyes' little girl. I think this is Nancy Sinatra's most beautiful song! Thanks to John Barry of coarse! Live and let Die was covered by "Gun's & Roses", not crazy about Axel!
This is an excellent rendition of one of the best songs ever written, and most of the audience are ignoring it. Amazing. Great work from the band though.
lol! welcome to the life of live music eh frauimabunt?! to be fair we did get a good reception on the night and people seemed to be very impressed, thankyou for your kind comments though!...
That was great, I hope you get loads of bookings.

You Only Live Twice or so it seems,
One life for yourself and one for your dreams.
You drift through the years and life seems tame,
Till one dream appears and love is its name.
And love is a stranger who'll beckon you on,
Don't think of the danger or the stranger is gone.
This dream is for you, so pay the price.
Make one dream come true, you only live twice.
And love is a stranger who'll beckon you on,
Don't think of the danger or the stranger is gone.
