I don't recall that anyone ever said these were a stunning ring of bells, merely quite nice and I think that is eminently sensible. They are not too good inside but outside are perfectly pleasant to listen to and I really do doubt that yet another boring new Taylor ring would've enriched ringing in the area at all. For what it's worth I do think that they did a very good job on the tuning of these. The handling and striking should be a bit better and I know it's not for want of good maintenance.
@timmeh1507 Mr Higson did a good job tuning them but there are limits to what can be done as some of the bells are not too good. Outside (with the sound control open) Just average 1900's Mears. Funny you should mention Taylors as the Taylor and G+J bells that pass through Keltek are snapped up quicker than Mears bells. I don't think handling would be much imroved unless the bells were moved down the tower. Shouldn't need anyone playing around with them, maybe thats why they are odd struck!
@KDowner94 They wouldn't have made them oddstruck but for whatever reason bells do seem to go oddstruck quite quickly after rehanging. I don't know why so many ringers put up with oddstruck bells - after all it is faulty equipment! There are some lovely Taylor bells up here in the northwest, although Clitheroe (Gillett & Johnston) are magnificent and Bilsborrow (Mears & Stainbank 1949) are a delightful set - video to come.
@timmeh1507 Perfectly set up rehung bells do become odd struck over a period of time, mainly due to wear on the clapper bush and pivot pin. But that does reinforce somewhat, the need to get a ring serviced and checked every year/couple of years by a proffesional company-Taylors don't charge a lot, nor does Matthew Higby, and its money well spent, as well as giving piece of mind, as you get a report on the state of the ring by a proffesional company.
At the end of the day, it is down to everyones opinion. If you don't like these then that is fine. I don't overly like them my self, but I'd never look down on someone because of their views. That is horrible.
@pal05pmajor3 There is no looking down on anyone, but there is no escaping from the fact that no matter how much time these bells have spent on a verticle lathe, they will never be any better than an average early 1900's Mears ring.
I've a lot of time and respect for the one particular ringer who fought hard to get these rehung but at the end of the day, by comparison with most other rings within the Blackburn Branch, Padiham are just average sounding Mears.
I can't believe so many on here like these! They are better now they have been tuned but nice? Maybe nicer than places like Church Kirk or Rawtenstall or Leesfield or Nelson, but thats not saying much.
At least one company mentioned some recasting when qouting for the rehang!
@LauraBellringer yeah they are quite a nice octave, though could be improved by sorting out oddstruckness, and increasing the volume in the ringing chamber (though cutting down on rope clatter would help!)
@1BODGER95 aye not bad at all. They are much better to hear outside, but obviously I couldn't get outside as I was ringing :) how's thee anyway Bodger? no vids for us for a while :(
i know, not got any intresting/new places to ring at coming up, but i have a new video of Glodwick if you're intrested. I'll stick that up in 'th'afternoon. :)
@1BODGER95 hehe I like Glodwick from the sound of your videos, although Garry says they are awful to ring (and he dont like light bells anyway!). I'm coming up to Lancashire in the autumn for a 1 year course so who knows might bump into you at ringing sometime.
yehh,, they're lovely! :] They go really quite smoothly, appart from the 7th and the tenor!!! they're horrid! lol, but they sound very good. Ooohh,, that'd be a nice surprise!! :] well,, your very welcome at East Crompton.
