  • Usually Portland in ratio of 1 to 4 or 5 local sand. But have had no problem using plasticized cement.

  • What sort of cment did you folks use?

  • Amazing.....wow :)

  • That was brilliant. Thanks for the tour.

  • great video!

  • ~~Question~~

How often should one clean out the wetland? Is there any maintenance involved? I would really like to know so I can start planning my system

  • we want to build something using the washers waste water to simply water the grass, but all these seems complex and intriguing. We dont have much of a slope in the ground on our lot but Im sure I can figure something out to water the entire lawn. Im mostly worried about the filtration of the water so I just started reading up on the do's and dont's.

Love the vids btw. Your voice and the music were so relaxing.

  • Set up a filter with cattails and other grasses, lead the water from there into a pipe, which then splits into several thinner dripper-pipes. Bury the pipes just below the grass in your lawn. The slope is easily created by slowly increasing the depth at which you bury the dripper-pipes. Done =)

Use nice chemicals in your washer, or your entire garden will die, though =)

  • Your videos are simply fantastic! I searched for hours for greywater videos on you tube until I finally came across yours, and you explained with more detail and practical application than any others!! I hope to replicate or create a system very similar to yours. Thank you so much for providing such useful information!

  • We do have spring and summer mosquitoes larvae in all of our water zones. But these have not been a problem as long as the mosquitoe fish are happy. They are small (about 3 cm) fish that breed quickly and can live in small areas. They exist well with other, larger, fish. When we went "septic" last fall they were quickly replaced from local ponds.

  • Thanks for sharing this. Do you have mosquitos in your area? I can imagine a system like this would attract them if they are already a problem.(?)

  • Yikes! Thats tragic, poor little buggers. Were your clams from the local waterways or the store-bought variety? Local ones tend to be less hardy, the store-bought "asian clam", is like a mule. They live a long time and can take environmental changes and hardships like true champions. The downside is that they aren't native, of course.

What do you mean that the system went "septic"? Just a bad smell? Or did you do a water quality test and see some bad results?

  • They were from local waterways, but I don't know if they were "local". I'm not sure "septic" is the right word. A marine biologist friend used this term. The water went cloudy, gave off an unpleasant odor, and many creatures died. We added as much fresh water as the system would hold and added a mycofilltration system following Paul Staments suggestions for commercial filtration. The system was righted quickly. Event happened during fall water hyacinth die-off. No water tests were run.

  • Paul Stamets is a hero of mine =)

Do you have any links to information on these mycofiltrations by him?

I would love a house like yours! Some day, some day...

  • We just created a micro-version of the commercial systems Stamets describes in "Mycelium Running".

The "feature" film on the Youtube Sandgardendick channel shows the addition of a 'food pond' added to the system described here.

Don't wait for some day. You can experiment with permaculture thinking even if you live in a tiny apartment/w balcony.

  • Very nice! I cant wait to have a greywater marsh of my own someday!

Have you ever considered putting freshwater clams into your pond and/or reservoir?

  • Yes. We did have clams as well as crayfish until last Oct. when the system went "septic". It was was a fish and mollusk disaster. It has happened twice in 6 yrs and we really don't know why. I've been slow in "reseeding" the system from local ponds and streams (I've got maintanence waiting). Let me know if you have answers and good luck with your system. We absolutely love ours!

  • By far, the most down to earth people I have come across (on youtube) with a clear, honest goal in mind.. It is absolutely great that you are putting videos out to spread the word.

    I thank you kindly!

  • and I thank you kindly!

We've made much progress since the winter solstice, but so busy that I have not found for documentation (but got some good stuff 'in the can'.

Our intention is to get up to date by the Summer solstice. It will include new food forest and an expanded grey water system that includes a humanure system producing black soldier larvae for a "natural" aquaphonics system.

  • great work

  • is this legal? seriously

  • Very Very nice and well done. I am going to build a wetlands system.

  • That is an awesome system.
