@RatRodScirocco These Honda B series engines make close to max torque at 3krpms, they make a second torque peak at arround 7.2k rpms. The first torque peak allows for crisp drivability, the second torque peak assists in power during high rpm shifts. If you really want to get a good launch you can engage the clutch at arround 3krpms conservatively. I don't think the three cam lobes and spring loaded piston which activates the VTEC system adds enough load to be considered a hinderance to power.
@McGeeRF Well for how long Ive been around the Vtec stuff when Im in my VWs that make less power . It seems to be that less moving parts seems to be the way to go. Most Vtecs sound like they;re flyin but they're not. I race these cars at a local 1/4 short track and have did very well with a 85hp VW againts Vtec and non. Id have to say gearing in the trans has alot to do with how I did so well..The 16v I have in my Scirocco donsent have rocker arms to move . lifter just under the cam lobe2 valve
@RatRodScirocco Thoes VW's with turbo make a nasty amount of torque, It is a completly different animal from a B series. Your basic VTEC motor is not going to be a powerhouse. I am speaking specifically for the B series engines. In my experience with my car, as long as I mini launch, and clutch it right; I manage to keep up with the turbo VW's. I did notice, in second and third gear that I am overtaking them. I am speaking for the 1.8 and 2.0L turbo VW's.
More specifically I am running a 97 Civic EX with JDM B18 Type R Its the stock engine with basic bolt-ons and Hondata tuned by yours truely. One of the main characeristics of this engine is the lighter but stronger internals. The valve trane components are all lightened, the engine is belt driven. The metal alloys, bearings, and combustion chamber are Formula 1 derived. This is a purpose built engine from scratch. This is why I don't think a 3 lobe cam and rocker arms is a hinderance.
@McGeeRF I dont run the 1.8ts or even a turbo motor .Would be cool but I like the 9a 2.0s with a 1.8 16v head. Not being mean just car talking. I would like to get my hands on a new 16v 2.0t and put it in my 1972pound Scirocco ..But the 05 and up GTi 2.0t's with no tittle are still going for like $5,000 or more..
@RatRodScirocco so you have the 1992 scirocco with a 2.0L engine N/A? What engine in what car are you running now? If you put a 2.0T in a 92 scirocco you would be in the high 12's. With out the turbo you might be in the 14's. Thats pretty fast.
My car weighs 2500 lbs and runs low 14's to high 13's. If I wanted to be in the 12's I would need to get the the top end built.

Im hitting 60 with a good lauch in 5.67secs with a 8th mile of 9.599.Its a hole shot car.Not fast not slow.

my civic came stock with this motor (2000 Si, electron blue). something about b-series, and b16's in particular, they're so appealing to me. solid little motors that sound great with a dc header, apexi n1 catback, and aem cold air intake
They have made it even better - three stage VTEC (which turns one valve off at lowest RPM to increase fuel economy) and this new "advanced VTEC - I don't know how exactly does it work, but it continously changes valve timing and lift (!). Unfortunatley... It means that VTEC will no longer "kick in" ;D
3 stage VTEC can only be found in the D15B SOHC engine.
There isn't anything advanced about the 3rd stage in the VTEC, as you correctly mentioned that it doesn't really 'kick in'. Nonetheless, the power output is stil capped at 130HP.
Este, junto al F20c1 (Honda S2000) son mis motores favoritos de fabricacion para autos de calle. Ambos motores siendo aspirados, dan una relacion potencia cilindrada excelente (sin contar con los motores aspirados de motos). 240 HP en tan solo 2 Lts.!!! La gran mayoria de autos de calle que llevan motores de 2 Lts. aspirados dificilmente superan los 180 HP (exagerando) y ni hablar de los 1.6 Lts que generalmente no pasan de los 120 HP. Saludos!!!
Oh it is quite amazing, but so simple which is the best part about it. The two lobes on the outside are your normal running lobes, the before vtec lobes. The middle cam love is your vtec lobe, which opens the valves for longer and deeper into the cylinder which increases airflow for a bigger bang.
....... and the K20 has greater displacement then the B16.
Take the Japanese B18C-5 205hp stock vs American K20 stock.
The only thing i-VTEC does greater then VTEC is improve the pumping losses during crusing, AND increase torque in the mid range. The over all power to liter remains the same. If you are romping on both they are equivelant in power per liter. i-VTEC is NOT a quarter mile improver, it is a drivability improver.
The B series are the old school bad ass Honda motors.
Dude..im not sure where your getting your numbers but the JDM spec'd ITR is at 197bhp, not 205. And they run 14.8 with a good driver, not 14.5. And you say you have a 97 coupe with an c5 huh..show me? Il show you my B16 rex..
No, the Acura Integra 98 Type R JDM spec is 205chp. 11:0:1 compression!!!
I dont know where you are getting your specs from. You could split hairs between ps and hp but stating 205chp is accurate enough. Much closer then the 191hp or 197hp that you called out. The 96 spec could be considered at 197hp @8,100 10:6:1 compression!!! But the 98 spec is 205hp @ 8,500 11:0:1 compression!!!!

whats funny is your both wrong. i-vtec is a much more refined and powerful vtec because it not only changes lift but also timing. but you do have it right on the weight ratio part. due to the latest civic's weight it doesn't feel as powerful as it should, but it is light years ahead of standard vtec..
maybe you're right, im not too technical about cars. i just read in wiki and thought it was slower, since it said the engine reuse the exhaust air to save more gas and it take away some power by doing that. it might wont affect as much.

この頃のホンダはエンジンももちろんだけど、ファミリーカーでも4輪ダブルウィッシュボーンだったり、面白いメーカーだったなぁ。。。

my civic came stock with this motor (2000 Si, electron blue). something about b-series, and b16's in particular, they're so appealing to me. solid little motors that sound great with a dc header, apexi n1 catback, and aem cold air intake

They have made it even better - three stage VTEC (which turns one valve off at lowest RPM to increase fuel economy) and this new "advanced VTEC - I don't know how exactly does it work, but it continously changes valve timing and lift (!). Unfortunatley... It means that VTEC will no longer "kick in" ;D

3 stage VTEC can only be found in the D15B SOHC engine.
There isn't anything advanced about the 3rd stage in the VTEC, as you correctly mentioned that it doesn't really 'kick in'. Nonetheless, the power output is stil capped at 130HP.

Este, junto al F20c1 (Honda S2000) son mis motores favoritos de fabricacion para autos de calle. Ambos motores siendo aspirados, dan una relacion potencia cilindrada excelente (sin contar con los motores aspirados de motos). 240 HP en tan solo 2 Lts.!!! La gran mayoria de autos de calle que llevan motores de 2 Lts. aspirados dificilmente superan los 180 HP (exagerando) y ni hablar de los 1.6 Lts que generalmente no pasan de los 120 HP. Saludos!!!

Oh it is quite amazing, but so simple which is the best part about it. The two lobes on the outside are your normal running lobes, the before vtec lobes. The middle cam love is your vtec lobe, which opens the valves for longer and deeper into the cylinder which increases airflow for a bigger bang.

and you say ivtec is slower, try swapping a k20 in that same sir and it'll blow the doors off one equipped with a b16, stock to stock.

....... and the K20 has greater displacement then the B16.
Take the Japanese B18C-5 205hp stock vs American K20 stock.
The only thing i-VTEC does greater then VTEC is improve the pumping losses during crusing, AND increase torque in the mid range. The over all power to liter remains the same. If you are romping on both they are equivelant in power per liter. i-VTEC is NOT a quarter mile improver, it is a drivability improver.
The B series are the old school bad ass Honda motors.

The Japanese spec B18C-5 is 205hp it has higher compression and sportier cams then the American version.
The 98 Acura Integra Type R JDM vers runs a 14.2 sec quarter
Here is how the math works out power to weight.
Integra 2600lbs 195hp US spec 14.5
Integra 2600lbs 205hp JDM spec 14.3
RSX 2800lbs 210hp 14.5
My 97 Civic coupe EX B18C-5 powered
With bolt ons.
Civic Type R 2500lbs 234hp 13.5

Dude..im not sure where your getting your numbers but the JDM spec'd ITR is at 197bhp, not 205. And they run 14.8 with a good driver, not 14.5. And you say you have a 97 coupe with an c5 huh..show me? Il show you my B16 rex..

No, the Acura Integra 98 Type R JDM spec is 205chp. 11:0:1 compression!!!
I dont know where you are getting your specs from. You could split hairs between ps and hp but stating 205chp is accurate enough. Much closer then the 191hp or 197hp that you called out. The 96 spec could be considered at 197hp @8,100 10:6:1 compression!!! But the 98 spec is 205hp @ 8,500 11:0:1 compression!!!!

My ex-roomate had a CRX with a JDM K20R swapped into it. He used to beat up on STIs and EVOs with it.
I've never seen someone do that with a B16A swap.

v-tec is amazing, i love b-series motors, their a master piece, that was when honda and acura was cool and all out bout racing, now they just create crappy cars with a i-vtec motor, the i-vtec is a decent motor but the 2008 civic si is just to heavy for it so there for drivin it u won't get the most outta your money coz the perfomance is unsatisfied

yup. i-vtec is slower too i think - more eco- friendly. slower engine+ heavier car eh.
i still love vtec though, i like the feeling of gas savor when you drive casual and more power when you smash on it. not that i want a super fast car and race. just enough power to satisfy me on freeway.

whats funny is your both wrong. i-vtec is a much more refined and powerful vtec because it not only changes lift but also timing. but you do have it right on the weight ratio part. due to the latest civic's weight it doesn't feel as powerful as it should, but it is light years ahead of standard vtec..

maybe you're right, im not too technical about cars. i just read in wiki and thought it was slower, since it said the engine reuse the exhaust air to save more gas and it take away some power by doing that. it might wont affect as much.

This function is only active during cruising and idle.
This function does not effect acceleration, because it is not active during acceleration.
It only effects gas mileage and emissions.
