Carlos and Warren both play great solos on their respective versions but, Jimi's is an absolute masterpiece. Timeless in it's beauty and magnificent in it's vision.
Dad took me to see Hendrix when I was 8...This song pre-arranged my Brain...Can't be bettered...Then Santana comes along! There's no words...He takes it apart, puts it back together & re-creates Guitar history! Jimi would have knelt at his feet!
Why does every video where somewhat prestigious musicians perform together (especially guitarists) end up with a debate over which musicians in the world are better than them? It's as if people imagine real musicians sitting around before a show going, "I'm the ****. No one is better than me."
Most real musicians just want to create something they hope is meaningful and couldn't care less where they stand in any sort of pecking order.
shut up man you have no idea what your talking about. i bet you're trying to sound all smart and everything like you know soo much about music but man cmon this is santana were talking abut. one of the greatest guitarists of all time he has revolutionized jazz rock forever man!
i was there for this concert and it was the best shit ive ever seen and ive been to a shit ton of concerts dmb rules all live concerts besides pink floyd
Beauford's really good, but I'd say there are ones better. I would say Dave Lombardo of Slayer is better. Danny Carey of Tool is better. That's all I can think of. Beauford is amazing though.
Dennis Chambers, Chris Coleman, or Aaron Spears to name a few. Don't get me wrong, Carter Beauford is SICK, but he'd be the first to tell you he's nowhere near the best
He recycles all of his licks in nearly every song and solo he performs. The man has skills and is a pro, but subjectively for me there are MANY other guitarists who are more original, creative and diverse with their music. "One note and you can tell it's Santana" because his music, to me, sounds way too much the same.
I disagree. Yes, you can tell it's Santana from one note because of his tone. He uses a unique tone. I disagree on him using the same licks over and over again.
obviously you do not know santanas music, you may not like santanas music, and thats your choice but to sais that santana music sounds the same tells me that you have not listened, his legacy he plays blues , flamenco, jazz, rock, latin fuzzion and more he, playing w? clapton jlh, benson, de lucia, tyler etc. there is not too many guitarists, that you can call, creative and diverse than santana and i respec if you do not like him, just don't said that he is not diverse and creative ,
@comlax22 i see what you mean but I mean you get that with any guitarist, some people mentioned warren and i have yet to listen to a warren solo that i dont hear the same things. If you want to hear a great solo w/ santana and dmb, check out sugar will at golden gate park. Now that is awesome.
why is people comparing this to jimi hendrix, this is a bob dylan song, yes jimi did the best remake of it, but it is still not his song! jimi jus did a way better remake then dmb and santana, i honestly think this version wasn't as good as the original or jimi hendrixs remake, but people stop acting like jimi wrote the song, because he did not!!! thank you bob dylan!
Santana has one sound, and he uses it in every friggen song. I respect his skills but to me DMB is so much more rich, melodic and creative, Santana is a strange fit w/DMB in concert, maybe it's just me.
The moment when dave throws it over to santana for the solo is sick...my first dmb show was 05/29/99 in Foxboro, MA...50 shows later, still loving it. GREAT VIDEO
50 fuckin' shows, are you for real!!!!??? I can only dream of going to that many. the only way I could do that is I worked for dave. I would like to be in Monk's place, you the guy that hands dave the right guitar for each song. I'm Monk does a lot more than that, I wonder if he handles all of dave's equipment, or maybe he's engarge of everyone's equipment, I dunno, but I want his job.
Santana sounds like he was thinking "uh, what's the key? And should I play it like Jimi? But what the f**k did he play back then? I forgot. Well, I'll just do my old routine and hope for the best..."
OF course A G F is very easy to solo over...but to make it sound good is the other thing. u can be so creativ with only one chord. but thats a thing people like u dont understand.thats why your music must sound like crap. guess thats the reason you hace to criticize musicians on youtube :)
some people say they can play this AGF solo the difference is that he can perform w/ anyone anytime, there are a lot of shit talking punks out there on YT they can't play shit and will never even be in a position to worry about that
that solo wasnt bad at all. made dmb a hell of a lot better. dont get me wrong, sick band, saw them twice in a row this weekend, but tim reynolds guested both nights which made it way better
The band is much tighter now that in '99 Now the DMB is at the top of the food chain! Don't get me wrong , they were bad then but now they are BAD!

Two thoughts:
1) It's amazing to me how identifiable Carlos' solo is as Carlos. You don't have to be told it's him to recognize it's him.
2) The man was at Woodstock and still rocks like a freaking killer!

So what people...he Santana-ized the solo....listen to this and Warren Haynes version back to back.
Warren locks into the blues scales flawlessly and Carlos ads his latin flavour...both very different but both just as good.
