  • look at that big crowd! Tony George, may you rot iin hell

  • damn love the sound of the terbo chargers. very very good sound.

  • I was at this race, I was 6 years old and remember AJ Foyt blowing his engine in front of me. This race got me hooked on racing. I'm looking forward to going this year. I bet it will be much more exciting than watching the Danicam crap on ABC. Thanks Indycars for posting this. Now all we need is open-wheel cars running at another Wisconsin racetrack about an hour or so north of Milwaukee

  • @kjhartje Hi I agree with everything except of "Danica crap". Look at it from other point of view. 1. Motrsport fanbase is globally decreasing. Less fans mean less money, less money less races, drivers etc... 2. Even thou she is (globally) average, she is one hell of a driver for the fact that she is a women. 3. As a woman she is quite refreshing factor. 4. She brings more money and fans to motorsport than (possibly) all other drivers. She, with Michelle Mouton is best woman driver ever. :)

  • @snoriq I really do not have a problem with Danica as much as my problem is with ABC showing her car riding around at the back while there is a battle for the lead. (St. Petersburg 2011 is the most recent example) Yes she brings money and viewers and does deserve some extra attention but showing her car for 10 minutes non-stop without even mentioning the race going on up front is what really gets to me. That is why I posted Danicam crap, Danica is fine, just ABC's coverage is crap.

  • @kjhartje ...and for the record I am her fan but because of the facts I mentioned earlyer, not because she looks how she looks. (If you consider her atractive.)

  • There was no "IndyCar" series in 1991. It was CART and it was a hell of a lot better than what we have today.

  • @rodentcafeteria

i see you have a point, but this was the original indycar series. If i remember right, their official name was

"PPG IndyCar World Series sanctioned by CART" or something like that. I think the trouble started when the IMS registered "IndyCar" as a trademark and Tony George built up his own series with that name. I´m sorry if im wrong.

  • @Nocito87 Sorry, didn't mean to nitpick. I think the big "split" came in 1996. I believe under idiot George's control, the series was called the IRL. Now that he has been kicked to the curb, it's now known as IndyCar. Actually, they've had so many different names, who can keep up with it? So, if I'm mistaken, I apologize as well. I just want to see return to the good racing that first attracted me to open wheel in the first place.

  • The Greatest Series EVER on the planet.....Nothing will EVER compare to the CART years. 1979-2001, yes I know the series folded in 2008, but with the exception of 2003 when PT won the title 01 was the last great year.

  • The Greatest Series EVER on the planet.....Nothing will EVER compare to the CART years. 1979-2001

  • thank you thank you

  • Sick.

  • Thanks for uploading these races. It gives people like me that are new to the sport to learn the history of the Indycar racing

  • I think 2011 will be the last year I watch american open wheel racing, those new chassis designs are sooo ugly there's no way i'll be able to stand it...

  • this isn't a irl race. this is a CHAMP CAR RACE. STOP TRYING TO STEAL HISTORY!!

  • @gojenson Where does anyone call it an IRL race?

  • So that's what it's like watching a race on tv during a "commercial break".

I would prefer watching a race without commentary to be honest.

  • Thank you so much for posting this!! Please keep these coming!!

  • GO RICK!!!

  • For some reason I could use a nice refreshing Marlboro Red.

  • Yeah, but its thoughts like that are the reason why tobacco sponsorship has been banned. . .:-/ Shame really.

  • These vintage races are awesome! Keep posting them!

  • Exactly. IndyCar racing has come full circle to what it was in the mid-90s (what Tony George was supposedly against), except we have a fraction of the fans, sponsorship, and media interest (most of which was sucked up by NA$CAR), and the innovation (or "Indyvation") is all but gone.

It's time for someone to make a bold change for the better to keep the few fans that remain. Right now it's a good product, but why not make it a great product? What stands in the way?

  • Thanks IndyCar for posting "vintage races" but to claim they are "Izod IndyCar" vintage races???

  • As with the "fendered" series. What was once "Winston Cup Series" is Now "Sprint Cup Series" But if you look everything they do or say is always "Nascar Sprint Cup Series" even when showing footage from the 80's....Thanks for watching these. We will be posting them on ITunes available for download soon. Search "IZOD IndyCar Series" on ITunes.

  • @indycars So, if nascar does it, Indycar should do it too? Great line of logic.

  • @indycars wasn't this known as C.A.R.T in 1991? or did C.A.R.T never exist?

  • @77GMCVAN Gotta take care of those sponsors. No money, no racey.

  • You should be thanking the IRL for posting classic IndyCar races on YouTube for us to enjoy. How is the IZOD IndyCar Series a joke when it features the same teams, same tracks, and same challenge of oval/road/street racing that made the CART IndyCar World Series the pinnacle of motorsport in the 90s?

  • preach on ace!!

  • Today's IndyCars are still the fastest open wheel race cars on Earth. I admit they don't look as good as 90s - 00s CART IndyCars, but they definitely look better than modern F1 cars. A race car's performance and its ability to put on entertaining races is much more important than its looks. Turbocharged IndyCars also return in 2012 so we'll be getting the "same cars" in 2 years. As for the tracks, 9 out of 17 tracks on the 2010 schedule hosted CART/CC races in the past.

  • Aside from top fuel dragsters, name me 1 other open wheel race car that races at 230 MPH. You're the moron because you won't be able to find any other open wheel race car on Earth that races at 230 MPH. You're also a complete moron for wishing for the death of your favorite sport.

  • 230 MPH > 228 MPH. Learn how to count fool.

  • It aint about speed is it? It's about the fact that Indycar is about to die thanks to one mr. Georgie. his actions from 15 years ago are about to completely kill off open wheel racing.

  • Tony George is no longer in charge. If you want to save you favorite sport, then stop blaming him, and support IndyCar.

Look at the bright spots. Most of the best teams and drivers from CART/CC/IC race on a 50/50 mix of ovals and road/street courses (an even mix we haven't seen since the 90s). IZOD has done more promotion in 3 months than any other title sponsor in IRL history. And we have 5 chassis manufacturers who want to build the 2012 IndyCar.

  • @IndyCarAce : Agreed. IZOD from what I've seen has turned things around. I think the 2006 INDY 500 was kind of a launching pad back to greatness. I think things will eventually get back to the way they used to be.

  • @xpander2k

The damage has already been done though. If the series wants to get back to the way it was untl the early '90's, Izod needs multiple chassis, tire manufactures, and most importantly bring in different engine's and turbochargers.

I think 2012 will be the year Indycar series comes back to the days of CART.

  • @tubeyouviewer1984

That's what I'm hearing though. I hearing the there will be multiple chassis again.

  • @xpander2k

oh it's going to happen in 2012.

We just aren't sure yet who the chassis company's will be yet. Rumors are Dallara will stay in the series with a new car, or lola will return, among others. The chassis is going to change but we just aren't sure about the engines yet.

I heard once the indy car series gains more fans and publicity, media coverage that their will be more races added to the calendar. But i don't see how that'll happen with the lack of media coverage they get now.

  • NASCAR/ISC owns Michigan Int'l Speedway and Calfornia Speedway and didn't offer the IRL a fair deal. That may change now that NASCAR/ISC need to attract more fans.

Road America can't afford to host an IndyCar race.

Laguna Seca can't afford to host an IndyCar race w/o sponsors.

Surfer's Paradise offered the IRL less money than they paid CART/CC. There wasn't even enough to cover travel costs. After A1GP went bankrupt, expect Surfer's Paradise to offer the IRL a fair deal.

  • The Milwaukee Mile promoter went bankrupt and didn't pay the IRL or NASCAR for putting on races this year.

Detroit has been destroyed by the recession. And it wasn't even a great track. I'd rather have Michigan Int'l Speedway back on the schedule.

Portland Int'l Raceway can't afford an IndyCar race.

    Nazareth Speedway closed in 2004.

The reason none of those tracks host IndyCar races today are because of either the track owners or the recession. You can't blame the IRL for that.

  • your talking about it like it is a seperate entity? it isn't. right now, we have a full grid, full schedule and are waiting on new equiptment. what's not to like? there is no more us vs. them crap. the i.r.l. won. champcar lost. the two discipline are very different. so it promotes different feelings in the racing world. sorry you cannot get past your bitterness to see what's in frony of you.

  • How did we lose? We gained a reunified IndyCar with the best teams, drivers, tracks, and balanced schedule of oval/road/street racing that made the CART IndyCar World Series the pinnacle of motorsport in the 90s.

  • gee, that's funny. i coulda swore i was sitting with 450,000 screaming motherfuckers at indy last year. what a great feeling it is to be a part of it as opposed to always complaining about what we ain't got.

  • i can agree with your post. MOST of it anyways. i'm not a giant fan of the dallara. i likeit....i don't love it. i hated the dp-01. ugly and inefficient. i don't overlove the 500. i just support it fully and ANY open wheel series that runs around it. indianapolis may not MAKE a championship....but you damn sure can't have a successful one with out it. can you?

  • Goodness...so much bickering. In reality we all want the same things but want it in different ways or came from different backgrounds as fans. As long as we can keep our eyes on the prize and bend a little here and there we can make unification means something. Stop bickering because it is what is and it was what it was. We should concentrate on the now and the future and learn from the past and bickering is not learning.

  • Please keep posting this vintage races, i love them !!!

  • too bad you a-holes can't get with the program. go to cc forums. they are your kind of people.

  • no. Aaaaaahahahahahah @ you for being a mindless wimp who cannot accept defeat.

  • If today's IndyCars aren't real cars, then why can I touch them when I go to IndyCar races?

  • don't let these assholes goad you into some etherial debate. they're just bitter. if they need to find answers to thier questions all they really have to do is ask why? why did kalkoven, gentilozzi and forsythe abandon us? why is tracy trying so hard to get in a dallara when he swore he would never ride in one again? for the record.....he will always be the 2002 500 winner in my eyes. champcar has just as much blame in this as anyone. YOU CANNOT BEAT THE INDIANAPOLIS 500!! period.

  • @IndyandNascarsuck Every time I see an FTG or earl, I think it's safe to deduct about 50 IQ points.

Create more constructive arguments instead of the same old FTG crap.

  • @IndyandNascarsuck

Do we really need the insults?

I don't like Tony George either and hate that Racin' Gardner could buy his way into the Indy 500. However, if you keep looking at the past ,you'll trip over your future.

Let's not forget that CCWS had problems too. How did Spike Tv work out?

And you failed again. Still with the FTG. Jesus, it never ends for you. Put the past behind you. I already did.

  • No FTG, I'm surprised.

    Rating's aren't ok. They're downright bad, frankly.

IndyCar didn't really have much of a choice. Only 5 or 6 races last year weren't interfered with in terms of starting late or ending early while they were on ABC/ESPN.

As for being an enabler, TG's no longer in charge. All he's got is "Vision" Racing.

  • I heard he wants to buy the whole shooting match back as well, but he can't let go. He's had 12 years, time to let someone else run it.

What will bring down the irl will be keeping this same, old, tired D/H/F formula. Spec racing isn't what Indy was supposed to be about, but, unfortunately, that's what it is right now. That needs to change first, before anything.

  • CRY ME A FUCKING RIVER!! if you don't dig it....and you don't, get bent and fuck off for awhile. k.

  • tell you what i'd rather do. i'll just keep watching the championship rounds.....i'll keep going to indy......seeing all the friends i've made.....enjoying what we worked so hard to obtain....and you can go get hugged up to one of those leaky dp-01's. you know, the same chassis that was supposed to save that dreadfull series your crying over. :) the samr chassis that was rushed into production, the same chassis that was leaking fuel when it was deliverd and required a half million dollars tofix

  • part 2: yea....i'll do that and you can sit at home with all of your buds and weep like little girls about what it used to be like. i prefer to live in the present. not swooning over shit that went down 20 FUCKING YEARS AGO!! all i ever see you do on these boards or the others you frequent is try to take fans and gravitas away from the current cicuit. your a cancer brah. go get some radiation treatment and die quietly. just a little advice from those of us who know how to move on.

  • oh yeah. btw, the guy whose company that fixed all of those leaky pigs you call race cars got fucked out of his repair fees when c.c. sold the fuck out. if you want to cry for someone why don't you cry for him. i guess he doesn't count right? not quite important enough for you? you trolling scumbags make we wanna puke. you'd rather see nothing as opposed to making it right again and you actively root for the failure of the only thing we have left. your pathetic!! c.c.forums is a callin bucky!!

  • The war between CART/CC & the IRL ended over 2 years ago with Tony George saving CC's best teams, drivers, and tracks. Today's IndyCar is more like CART in the 90s than CC ever was.

  • meh, just get over it.

  • This is one of the greatest tracks in all of American open wheel racing. Somebody please save this track!! Not having it on the schedule would be like not having the Belgian Grand Prix on the F1 schedule. Its just not right!!! :(

  • @minonkracer : I live in Milwaukee. Last I heard the track is going to be ok.

  • @minonkracer I agree, but as a resident of Wisconsin, if I had my choice of where to watch Indycars it would be at Road America. I will be here next week of course but still, Road America needs to be on the schedule ASAP. I was a wee lad at this one, still remember this race 20 years later.

  • IICS please save Milwaukee!!
