It is amazing to be able to see this video. My great grandfather was chinese, and do to the prejudice of the cuban society back them, my grandfather changed his last name from Pei to Morales! It still visible in my kids the oriental fixture in them!...Thank You
@Jennyyx3Lovee yea he was speaking hoisan alot of people who dont know it might just think its canto but its not but it is related tho some words are very similar but there are words that are just plain different
at 0:50 I think he says "I have been to Vancouver". COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000L.
I was in Heshan few weeks ago. The taxi driver told me that so many of Heshan people moved to Cuba and Chile long before the War. He seems very frail and I think he says he's 92.
He sounds like he's speaking in that modified Cantonese that my mum uses whenever she doesn't want me to understand. >.>; (Though it's similar that I can pick up a few things anyway.) Anyone know the name of it?
my god I can't believe they kept the cantonese language alive in his family considering most of the chinese immigrants intermixed with local cuban residents... wow just wow... well we have also kept the french language well and alive in cuba also especially in mi familia...
I'm of Heshan descent as well. My dad says his maternal grandpa immigrated to the US. Some of his paternal families moved to the south / central America and lost in touch. So this mister could be my long lost relatives!
It isn't rare actually. Cubans have a lot of Chinese heritage/ancestry, but many people overlook it for some reason to acknowledge the Spanish and African ones.
Trinidad, as far as I can tell, was a beautiful city, at least en the old colonial center. I never went to "El Valle de los Ingegios" (Valley of the Sugar Mills). I guess he meant his forefathers were from China. I think the Chinese went to Cuba en the second half of the XIX century; thus his age does not add up. Anyway a great history and an amazing thing he can speak Cantonese.

He looks very old, seems like he hasn't spoken it in years. I'm Cuban and have mixed Chinese ancestry, and I only know very few words in Chinese.

He said he came from a Chinese city of Heshan and knew some Cantonese phrases. I bumped into this gentleman in Trinidad, Cuba.
