  • Thank you for watching Taylor !!

  • Thanks man. Really useful!!

  • Its a great vid for someone who's getting into rowing. If you want to really improve your cardiovascular system you should try breathing through your nose while erging!

  • @csabour9 YES, Camron, you are right. The only time that it is not possible is when you are sick and your nose is full of .......

    Great biking trip!!

  • weare told to keep back completely straight all the way from bottom to shoulders, but im seeing a lot of the olympics and this video theres a slight curve. WHOS RIGHT????

  • @TheFlinglish Hi there. You should try to keep your back straight (upper and lower back) .The slight curve that you see on the back of the Olympic rowers is not from not having the back of these athletes straight but from the position of the shoulders and the arms that are straight forward and the size of the chest that creates the visual illusion that the back is curved. We can't change the anatomy of our back but we have to try to keep the strong straight position of our back when we row.

  • @MrKisiov thanks

  • @TheFlinglish YOU ARE WELCOME !!

  • Question? At the end of the 'Finish' stage, are the legs fully extended and the knees locked out, or do you keep a slight bend in the knee as not to over extend?

  • @pxyz123lake Hi there. For sure at the end of the leg drive your legs should be fully extended and down with knees locked. Just think of how you do a leg press - at the end of the press your legs are fully extended. Same thing in rowing. Your legs are the strongest part in your body and in your rowing stroke. You should use them fully and 100%.

  • Excellent video. Big help. The breakdown of positions was particularly useful. Many thanks. Well done.

  • Great instructional video.

21 people forgot to strap their feet in.

  • can I use the machine if I have a prolapsed disc?

  • Comment removed

  • In that case you should not have any problems using the rowing machine but don't go to hard when starting in the first few weeks. Have fun training.

  • If I have little spine problems, can I use this machine?

  • @Razor4ever Hi there , what is your spine problem ?

  • @MrKisiov nothing serious just some problems with the neck, mainly because of wrong computer seating :).

  • Thank you for this! I have been using the rowing machine for a while, and thought I'd actually check if I'm doing it right...well, I've found out how to PROPERLY do it now! I hope I see some good results! :)

  • Lol, intro was hilarious

  • As someone already commented. All fitness instructors need to watch this. I see such poor technique being taught to people who get no reach pull just with their arms. This video helped a lot with my own technique, I had no idea I was over-compressing so much. Good rocking over is essential and you don't have to have a perfectly straight back (always gets me tired).

  • technique is the only reason why most of the boats i row in actually do well

  • full body workout, I love it

  • Helped a lot. Thank you

  • Very helpful, thanks a lot!

  • Our crew learned a new technique, I prefer it. It's a little bit different. But still good video!

  • @c8rd1n8lbyrd It is very normal to have a different technique This is a rowing machine after all. Have FUN training.

  • Thanks for the great video. As someone suggested, this video should be made available in gyms to help people correct their technique as it is very common to see people rowing with an incorrect one.

  • What would be a good start for a sedentary individual? Sets/reps/weight? I've never used this machine but I plan to build the majority of my muscle using it. Any tips from experienced lifters would be appreciated.

  • @MariosLasagna You can start with 3 sets by 10 min with 2 min off. Do not go to hard. Watch your pulse to be around 130 bids/min and that will give you the power of your pull. Go with rate/tempo 16 to 18 strokes/min. This workout you can do everyday or 3 times per week.. In 3 weeks time you have to change the workout. Have fun

  • Yes you are right of course, this was the first thing that I edited and because it has been popular I don't want to edit and repost...sorry about that

  • You have really got to work on the audio levels on this thing. The instructor is really low, but the music is extraordinarily loud.

  • @bugramps How are you doing? Your comment is very interesting. Yes, this is not professional video .The video is very pure and real. No photo-shop, no special edit, nothing that will make it win an OSCAR......But you know what - just because the video is raw we got more than 300 000 hits. Thanks for your comment and all the best to you !!

  • Dear danielphilipcater, Yes, you should never have two peaks in your stroke. Only one. Thanks for you interest. Regards.

  • Hi treintayunoo, Adam was a recreational rower so he doesn't need the perfect rowers body. On this video he is doing a demo and for that he doesn't need the perfect body. He has the perfect body for a recreational athlete...:-))

  • if this is such perfect form, why doesnt he have a rowers body?

  • Very helpful, thanks :)

  • Good demo! They should play this in gym's as I see so many people using bad technique.

  • I learnt to use the rowing machine from a Personal Trainer. The prick needs to watch your video cos I've been doing it all WRONG! Thanks for the correction xx

  • Thanks! there is one of these machines in my gym and now I know how to use it properly

  • pbcmbeez22 -Thank you for your comments. Please don't forget that we are talking about technique on the Ergo. I want to ask you the following question - If your legs are straight, what would be the direction of your power curve UP or DOWN? At the point when your legs are straight and you start pulling with your back your power curve will be going UP or DOWN. In my opinion if you put your legs straight and only after that you pull with your back you will have two power picks stroke LEGS and BODY.

  • @MrKisiov I missed the prior comment, but you aren't saying you should have two peaks are you? Because that would be wrong.

  • you engage the back too early. The legs should be straight, then back.

  • @pbcmbeez22 and your POWER curve will have 2 picks and that is not something that you are looking for in rowing. Anyway thanks for watching the video and have a good Fall season.

  • row row, fight the power!

  • great tips and sensible info, improved my technique. Thanks

  • Thank you for making such a detailed video.

  • Someone removed my message here but I want to say Thank you for the Great video. I am using it in my GYM workouts on the rowing machine.

  • Lubo we miss you

  • Here is the news from Japan - Part from Diethelm Maxrath e-mail......I am in Japan! Still going strong! Thanks god about 600 km away from the disaster............ and hope everything will work out OK. Yesterday the last two of our rowers got in contact with their families. They are OK but their houses are gone. Hope tp see you in Europe......This is the news from Japan. We are thinking of you guys. Lubo Kisiov

  • Dear rowers, dear coaches it is that time of the year again when we all hit the water not only for training on the water but for racing. I wish you a very successful season. I want to send my best wishes to the rowers and the people from Japan, who are having a very hard time now. I was trying get in touch with Diethelm Maxrath, who is a good friend of mine and the Head rowing coach of Japan. • the legs can only start moving when the chest is already colocated to the front

sorry about the english i´m from portugal

  • @pureplayer8 Pretty good English actually brother.

  • Mr. Kisiov, are the knees locked or kept slightly bent? I have problems with my right knee when I row. Thank you for this video.

  • @Zipemova1 Dear Zipemova, first you have to see a doctor to tell you why you have a problem in your knee. If you are not a rower and you don't have to practice your rowing technique on the ERG you don't have to worry about your knees been bent at the finish. But if you are rower and have to do your technique on the ERG your legs have to be straight at the finish. Keep your attention on keeping your legs straight cause locked knees sounds painful to me. Hope this helps Your in rowing Lubo Kisiov

  • Drag factor has nothing to do with your age. It has to do with your body weight. In special trainings on the ERGo your Drag factor could be at 10, but this is only when you do some special trainings.

  • @Romandiesel

My coach always says between 3 and 4 (and that is at the same rowing club as this place). However, I am a junior so dont know if it should be different for an adult!?

  • What is your body weight?

  • the technique is a bit different when using a sweeper :)

  • very helpful; thanks

  • Smile when you row with me!

  • The guy talking sounds like a soviet, creepy.

  • @AusyAaron .

I am not Soviet - and for sure I am not creepy as AusyAaron sounds. This video is for rowing only and not for people who are trying to talk about politics.

  • I just started rowing at the gym, and this video will definitely help me improve. Thank you very much.

  • very good !

  • Thank you Maisy052003. GOOD JOB with Penn AC. Penn AC results are clear picture of the great work you do over there.

    Best regards

  • This is the best technique video on the web. I refer to this video whenever I am discussing technique with my athletes at Penn AC and Penn AC Gold. Please check out the Penn AC Gold 2011 Slide Show! We are looking for athletes for the 2011 Program.

  • @HungaricusDominatus - I wasn't talking about 'rowers' in general, just the world class olympians that were posting their critiques below.

  • THANK YOU TO ALL WHO CAME TO SEE OUR VIDEO. NOW WE ARE AT 250 000 HITS AND NUMBERS ARE GOING UP. FANTASTIC !!

    YOURS IN ROWING.

    LUBOMIR KISIOV

P.S. - NOW I AM THE HEAD COACH OF THE TURKISH ROWING FEDERATION.

  • LUBO!! HAHAHAHA THIS IS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMAZING, UUUUUUUUNNNBELIEVABLE!

Youtube is full of dumb high school coxes and rec rowers than think they know everything about the sport after one year of rowing. They're just a bunch of dumb dumbs with no medals.

When you are coming back to visit?

  • @gingeypoo JAGGGGOOOO. Nice to see you big guy. I am not coming back to Canada soon. There is a lot to do in Turkey. I want to get the guys here at the same level as our guys in Canada are. It will take some time and hard work. Big hugs and I will call you.

  • I've never done it. Just purchased a Concept 2 D waiting for the delivery. Your video is excellent. Thanks.

  • 1:38?!?!?!??!?! Thats so cool!!!!

  • k cool but i don think adam deserves to be spoken to like tht

  • @scribbleo3 ADAM was great. and we had fun making that video.......and he deserves a lot more....

  • Great to see someone laying down the true basics and WHY they are basic. It may sound silly to take note of when your knees will get in the way, but if you don't think of it at first... ::grin::

  • his accent sounds like Swarzy! he must be a austrian

  • Well done i can do 7.24 but then again i am 49.Check my boxing videos.

  • How old are you? With 6:30 in High school you are very good. You could of done very well in the sport. Why don't you go back and try it again but not at 4:30h A.M.

  • this coach is wayyy better than my coach was in highschool. I got sick for 1 week (i am talking incredibly ill) and missed 1 week of rowing. He called my parents said that i was skipping practice to do drugs. I was like, wtf? at 430 in the morning? he was a dick. Fastest split time i ever got was 1:22/500m, and could do 2km in about 6:30

  • @MrMegaWolfeman Nice. I just started rowing a couple weeks ago, it takes me like 10 minutes to do 2k D:

  • @usrname468 haha, just keep it up man! you will get better, technique is most important than anything, get that right and you will be fine!

  • i fell off the seat and everyone in the gym laughed at me :[

  • Excellent demonstration, just to check to see if I have been using the rowing machine properly and this has reassured me. Thank you :)

  • gret vid

  • to drumhead95 - Don't worry It is very normal. You should try to build some muscles on you back by doing some weights and your back pain will go away. Yours in rowing. Lubo

  • when i keep a straight back my back starts to hurt ;/

  • Very good training video. Thank you very much.

  • his quarter and half slides are very short.

  • quarter and half slides are very short :s

  • Excellent instructions, thanks alot!

  • Excellent video thank you

  • Dear rowers and coaches. The video was made to help all of us in our training. Adam is not rowing anymore but he showed you that even a NOVICE can do well on the rowing machine and learn the proper technique very fast. This video was FUN to make and it is easy to watch. Thank you for watching . Best regards and yours in ROWING - Lubo Kisiov - Head coach of the Turkish Rowing Federation

  • Dear rowers, YOU TOUBE informed me that they will BAND account 5454ab from YOU TOUBE and the IP address of this client will not be allowed to post comments on YOU TOUBE again. Rowing is our sport and a sport for real people. THANK YOU ALL FOR THE SUPPORT AND THE GOOD WILL AND WORDS !!! Lubo Kisiov

  • Great Video! Thanks for sharing! I am new to rowing and always end up with a backache. I plan on using these pointers. Thanks again!

  • DEAR ROWERS, There are two comment on this Rowing Technique video that are coming from 5454 ab. These comments are not in English and you can see them. The comment are full of hate and I asked YOUTOUBE to investigate. I am sure that the person who wrote them here is long gone but YOUTOUBE can trace down the LOG IN and tell me from where this massage was posted. Then I will let you know because you have to know these people who hate rowing and hate everyone who does good for the sport. Regards!

  • @5454ab

When you send messages like this one on YOU TOUBE , you know very well that there are consequences and leagal actions. I will start them righ now. This is a video for rowers not people who hate rowing.

  • Great and very helpful for a novice. Cheers. More please

  • Thanks for watching DOWN UNDER. lubo.kisiov

  • I just want see a machine that actually looks like it's taking you into a 'natural' rowing position! This looks akward and it looks like this guy is going to have a back ache! Whatever!

  • @manwhatupduck

the guy who is actually rowing is a bit off for all of his sections like 3/4 slide and stuff but his technique is fine he might be a bit tense but he's doing it right, i row in the mercantile team in melbourne and my couch showed us this video.

  • salma yaqoob has got a fucking massive nose

  • guy is oepning up with his back

  • guy is opening up with his back a bit

  • @jamically many people I watched on youtube do that. You can see they don't use this machine daily. They would get hurt at their back.

  • You Brits are sooooooo into rowing!!!!

And your all sooo good at it!!!!

Wish we were like that here in the States.

    Well excellent technique video!!

I really enjoy the UK Concept 2 site. As an indoor rowing instructor here in the states I frequently use it as a valuable reference source.

  • LOL I CANT STOP LAUGHING !!!!!!!!

  • Adam, when you have a chance drop me an e-mail, cause yours is not working.

    Thanks, Lubo

  • erg is the rowing machine ;)

  • go Adam!!!!

  • im new to rowing, and im just curious. what is an erg?

  • Awesome video. Just when you think the guy is like a rowing instructor robot from space he cracks a joke: «you're so serious when you do that...» Pitch perfect.

  • Brilliant. Shame fitness centres don't take note of this- so many do it completely wrong.

  • just took up rowing at gym and the only thing I have a problem with is my knees. I feel like I am hyper-extening them. Any suggestions?

  • Thanks for a very useful video. I've just started using a rowing machine and my technique was clearly all wrong. Well directed by the instructer, great stuff :)

  • why does my gym not have one of these? lol

  • Thanks for the upload, im gonna try the machine for the first time today

  • can somebody tell me how it works with the breathing? do I exhale when I recover?

  • @nico8080

    inhale when you recover ;)

  • @teddybeerineenpak I thought so, but it looks wrong because when you recover you compress your body and hence it seems you wouldn't inhale as much air as when you extend your body.

  • @nico8080 maybe you're right i gonna try tomorrow i let you know.

  • @teddybeerineenpak cheers mate. are you a pro?

  • @nico8080 exhale while you recover is wrong, you exhale automatic when you make your stroke, try it and you will be out of air in a short time, im not a pro, i do row races and i win sometimes but i am just 15 years old and my personal record on the water is 7.50 on 2k and on a rowing machine 7.10 on 2k, are you a pro?

  • @nico8080 With most sports you exhale when you exert force same for rowing so you exhaleon your stroke. And inhale on the recovery.

When you recover you might bend your body but this doesnt significantly lower the amount of air you can breath in. And when you are in a race or trying to set a pr you have to pull hard making it almost impossible to breath in at your stroke.

  • @tikkywikky ko thanks I was doing fine then! regards

  • This is why I love the Internetz! Thnx great post!

  • Great video. Very clear explanation of different strokes. The coach is very good.

  • I never knew that so many rowers were so uptight and anal about 'newbies' giving it a go. Were you all born expert rowers or are you just full of yourselves?

  • @Sinosceptic They arent.

  • @Sinosceptic There is just the proper emphasis on correct form. It doesn't matter if you are doing push-ups, sit-ups, or squats. Proper form EVERY time for most exercises is very important because the more tired you get, the less proper your form - and you CAN hurt yourself with bad form. Nobody wants that

  • @Tangeloor - correct. But no need for some of the smug, retarded comments below from so called experts.

  • see him smile when the guy goes "you can keep going like this for hours" haha. He's thinking "hell no"

  • I have simple question: height gives an advantage in rowing or no? for example: if there are two guys with similar condition but one is taller who had advantage? it is possible that ever a little stronger, but shorter dude cannot catch taller one?

  • Desde Argentina un recuerdo para nuestro campeòn mundial ALBERTO DEMIDDI /Gerardo Costantini- Rowing)

  • @teewoods

You first have to get the basic stroke down before you start going fast, like... Try to get flat 2:00 for 2 minutes with an SPM between 16 ~ 22.

Average long endurance SPM for men is 18 and 16 for women.

Although it varies alot, between all sorts of people, this is how it usually is.

  • Ergs are a rowers personal hell. Great. But this is not a bad instructional video. The best thing is walking into the gym and watching non-rowers on an erg! Bahaha.

  • @RowanDaily word! can't stop laughing when i see noobies hitting the ergo.. i'd give a lot to see them rowing a sculler!

  • @RowanDaily Little known fact:

C2 does not stand for concept 2; it stands for concentration camp. : P

Really, though, watching people who have never rowed (correctly) on an erg is hilarious.

  • Ergs dont hurt ?

    wtf

they are the worst thing about rowing !

  • i am the best rower in denmark :D

  • @krallan12 screen or don't exists ;)

  • he has no tap down before his recovery. not helpfull.

  • Do you tap down on a rowing machine??

  • whenever you row on an erg if your a rower its practice for water training when you cant get on the water. you should always try to emulate good technique from the water onto an erg.

  • I average about 34spm - i guess this is too much? I am short guy so I have to make up somehow :(

  • @teewoods Yes, even in the Cambs-Oxford boat race they wont average over 30 spm, Relax on the recovery (way in), you should be taking twice aslong on the way in as when you drive. Notice how long this guy takes on the recovery part of the stroke. Hope this helps.

  • Thanks ! But whats the ideal spm? I guess it also depends on one's height. I am short @ 5'9 so i have to row faster

  • Try slow sessions (20-23max spm) on drag of not more than 140. It's a killer & you'll be rubbish at the beginning. But it'll train your leg power &timing of parts of the stroke. Because it's slow you will have enough time to concentrate on technique. If you are short your stroke needs to be more precise and powerful to compete with taller guys in short race. But their muscles have to cope with more leaverage of long back and legs, you should not tire as easily on long distances

  • Whoops, that didn't cascade my post. It was meant for 'teewoods'

  • Thank you

  • Yeah, but he only has a rounded back when his legs are doing the work, when its his arms his back's flat?

  • caspervegan,

yes it is the same concept as with weightlifting, rowing with a rounded lower back is incorrect and means you lack hip flexibility. if you round with a rounded back you are decreasing strength. focus on stretching the hamstrings and hip flexors everyday, as well as quads, I have had this same problem, lots of stretching will definitely solve it.

  • i meant to say row with a rounded back, not round.

  • Ok, but that means that the guy in the video is not rowing correctly??? He is rounding his back.

  • Is it correct to have a rounded lower back? Working out with weights normally you mustn't round your back (squatting, deadlift, etc.). I am just wondering.

  • Music is SO loud but the trainer's voice is so weak! Why do you hate my poor PC speakers?! Is this coach a bulgarian?!

  • What music???

  • @daveclow right at the beginning
