  • I've been playing the guitar for thirty odd years, I've even played at Glastonbury fest but I always wanted to play the drums, Now I know why I drum myself (on the clavical's) thumb and fingers rollin' like a good times, Bad times feel, slapin' anything at the same time! Nice Roll, Nice One!

  • Very cool, I've been working on this one for a couple weeks now.

Why to you sometimes switch to 16'ths on the bell?

  • All my idiot drumming friends try to talk about the greatest drummer of all time, and I always point to Bonham with this one, and their response......"yeah but he used a double pedal".......and then I just leave the room.

  • What is your left hand doing on the snare in the rolls at the very end? 6.24 and 6.32..ish......is it triples?

  • hey my congratulatns !! very clean playing and tecnique .... your drum kit sounds very gooood !! what kind of kit are you using (drums, snares, drumheads) in this video ? thanks !! let me know ...

  • @cjorata

The kit is a Premier Artist Maple in Rosewood finish. Sizes are 13,16,18,24. Standard Premier Everplay coated heads (same as Remo Ambassadors) Cymbals are all Paiste. 2002 sound edge hi hats, 18" and 20" crashes and a 24" Giant Beat ride. I think I was using a Ludwig 400 snare in this clip with coated Ambassador head.

  • Beautiful, really beautiful. 'We've done four all ready..' Would like that to be the next lesson!

  • dude u need MORE COWBELL!!!!!!

  • man, your playing is fucking lovely, but ..the wristwatch?if i wore a wristwatch ,it would fuck me up.it would put me off balance,or something.each to they`re own..keep thumping them tubs, dude.

  • Just a tip because i'm a massive Bonham fan. I have a book of Zeppelin grooves and for Good Times Bad Times in the intro he's doing accents on the snare and floor tom. Also during the main verse beat he plays the right hand part on the rim of one of the drums. I think that's just up to you. But other than that you're an awesome drummer and at 15 i'm learning a lot from your videos so thank you :) Props from Sydney!

  • 'so, you don't have to play the bass drum that 'load' hahah sick accent

  • Long hair men.com

  • If your going to imitate Bonhams set get a cowbell. And, i'm not completely sure but after you do the triplets with the high hat and base im pretty sure you hit the toms. Good vid, but i have a flu and the only perscription is more cowbell!!!!

  • good foot technique brother.

  • Damn man, you make those continuous triplets seem like a piece of cake...just like Bonzo did.

  • im not good at playing the high hat and bass drum at the same time with my feet, do u have any ideas to help taht or exercises that might help?

  • @lanceporter

    agreed

  • anda gorndo! bonzo hay uno solo! ridiculo.

  • Are you playing heel up or down ,maybe because the triplets aren't the accent on this groove?

  • WHERES THE FUCKING COWBELL!!!!!!!! MORE FUCKING COWBELL!!!!!

  • I could watch someone play the drums all day, it's so damn mesmerizing.

  • Thanks so much man

  • J'aime bien ton tee shirt ! :p

  • ur neighbours must hate u

  • 5:50 !!!! increible

    o.O

  • i find it best to keep your toe tword the center of the pedal and break the habit of wanting to put it in your "driver position" (or in my case i have to stop driving like im playing the kick drum ha). this is one of the coolest sounding but most difficult drum techniques to master, but totally worth it! pay attention to this guy. he's a fucking amazing drummer. good job man!

  • Very good. Thanks.

  • You need a cowbell. That's what John Bonham used to keep time with his right hand... But your version is perfect. Major props!

  • @SaddleScars And you said cowbell. I am sorry! Your video helped me tremendously with this song.

  • what cymbals are you using?

  • i accidently kinda stole this beat in a song a group i play in wrote, or at least the feel of it anyway. such a cool song thanks for showin us how to play it man

  • Stinkbuttsjean: I had the same problem. Direct your energy downward on the pedal(s) rather than foward. You will expend less energy, get a more powerful sound, and gain better control over your bass drum. Remember to use the ball of your foot, heels up, on the fat part of the pedal. And PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

  • well done and explained very nice another great lesson thx for all the great vids

    -- Mighty

  • maaaaaan!!!! So freaking cool!!!! Great drummer!

  • This guy is the best Bonham type drummer on here.

  • Its floor tom and the snare drum not floor tom and regular tom

  • nice job breaking it down my friend, that drum beat always puts a smile on my face.

  • What kind of kit is that? solid drumming

  • Whats so sad is there are practically no main stream drummers that use heel toe these days its so sad

  • great, your video is really the best good times bad times cover, the others're just playing that, but you, you really know.

    thanks for that lesson

  • good screw mate.

  • great lesson - I learned to do the heel - toe method from learning this song. Back in the 80's before internet, I thought I was the only person to play heel - toe - To my shock I couldn't believe how many people learned the same method without the same teacher or the use of the internet.

  • I try everyday to do the "Toe to Heel" technique, but my pedal is smaller than my foot and my nail scratches against the chain which hurts like hell, (and i cant ware shoes while drumming) John Bonham is my inspiration, and the reason why i drum, so i really want to be able to drum just like him..

    ANY IDEAS??

  • Comment removed

  • @stinkbuttstjean Try an Axis Longboard, it's the bass pedal you want if your going for Heel Toe

  • @stinkbuttstjean

I don't actually use the hell and toe method myself, I use more of a swivel type thing (my foot slides from right to left on the pedal when I'm playing fast doubles) but I think Bonzo used Heel + Toe. Check out Tim Waterson and JoJo Mayor heel toe lessons. You don't need small feet or huge pedals to do it, but I'm not an expert on it by any means so you would be better looking elsewhere for more info on this technique! Good luck with it.

    Fraser

  • @Phrase

thats wat i do..dam small world..sumbody told me to do a "swivel type method wen i was tryna get my foot to build up enuff power and constant speed to cover the nirvana song scentless aprentice wit a band..and i found out that using that same method actually workx for this song also..but really wit dedication and practice..no special methods r really needed..just plain old hardwork..ask buddy rich!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @Phrase bonzo actually played heal up

  • @stinkbuttstjean i had the same problem. So instead of doing the heal toe technique, i started doing this thing where i kinda bounce my foot from the back of the pedal to the front real fast. it sounds the same as heal toe and its a lot easier for me to do. Just because something works for one person doesnt mean it will for another.

  • @stinkbuttstjean look into gettting a tama pedal. I wear size 12 boots and I can still move around on the pedal.

  • @stinkbuttstjean

    Suck it up

  • @stinkbuttstjean i use the slide which might work for u which is basically hitting once on the lower section of the bass pedal and sliding your foot up and hitting again on the upper section of the pedal. look up videos on slide bass drum technique. but the best way i think is to just start muscling it out and eventually ur body will find a way to do it

  • @stinkbuttstjean mine is smaller, this is what i do, i put my heel on the bass, and point my toes up, u literally arent suppose to hit the pedal with your heel, when i do heel toe, its more like ball of foot, toe

  • nice, the only thing wrong with this lesson, is that he ends each groove with the rack toms, not 2 hits on the snare

  • I recognise that Hihat hat sound...........cant' think where?

  • ahh i gotta get my foot faster

  • Awesome job ! You are a one of my sons favorite teachers!

  • this is a useful video thanks ... I could never do it cuz I aint a drummer ... but helpful anyway

  • Good explain my friend. Bonzo rules!!!

  • Dude thanks for the video. Taught me loads!!!! love the way you say at the end something like that. Nice one keep up the good work.

  • Nice man!!

That's in the 1st diploma syllabus for trinity.

I love the way your kits not that good but you make light work out of it.

    Cheers man.

  • If yo don't mind me asking, why do you have your ride so far away from you? It seems like you have to reach as far as you possibly can to hit the bell...

  • @tttooommm123

Well, it's a 24" ride (Paiste Giant Beat) and if I move it a little closer so I can reach the bell more easily, then the edge of the cymbal will get in the way when I'm going round the toms!

  • @Phrase I find that too, i need the ride out of the way for fills

  • It has the Good Times Bad Times tempo but I have really only seen one guy out here do it note for note. Even Steve Smith screws it up. That first set of notes are the Snare and floor tom with hihat breathing then the cow bell comes in there is one note on the upper Tom then off the snare then roll around baby. ;p)

Then after that is where I need to look at this tab I have and just listen because this is where I loose accuracy. You do groove nicely my friend.

    Thank you.

  • you need more cowbell!

  • Cool lesson, it really helped, but to get the fast double kick drum in, is there a technique or do u just keep practicing slow and then it'll come to you??

  • awesome dude! man zep was the best.

  • youre an amazing drummer. all of your lessons really helped me with all of my led zeppelin songs on drums

  • great Fronzo !!

  • Hey, thanks for the info, helped a lot. I was just wondering, I am getting freaking close to the actual song but I find my bass drum missing some times. Is there a perfect amount of inches it should be put from the drum? Thanks. :)

  • radddd

  • Thanks a lot!

  • true bonham style

  • There should be a tom instead of a snare at the end of the phrase. i.e. where you play 'snare-snare' it should go 'snare-tom'.

  • GREAT tutorial Fraser!!! (and adorable accent!!!!)

  • One foot or two? Sounded like one.......

  • simply great

  • Awesome!

  • i have a request id like u to teach, its the stairway to heaven groove.Cant hear what bonzo does after the guitar solo and triplets. He repeats it like 5 times at 6.45 aprox. If u have time please teach us :DDD

  • Nice Job!

  • Nice lesson! your sound quality has came way up since this...keep it up.

  • Thanks,

Yeah most of my early videos were recorded just using a video camera so the sound isn't great. Now the stuff I do is recorded using Cubase and the sound is then mixed with the video footage to replace the nasty sound from the video camera!!

  • in tha intro dosnt he use a cowbell ???

  • Yes.

  • @Phrase

having a little trouble with the fast bass drum on this one...any tips?

  • yh he does

  • you are ......

  • Great drummer. Friggin awesome accent dude.

  • @TheDirectorofFoo scottish accent.about 100 miles where bonham cam from.

why does a scottish accent get 5 thumbs up????

    american thing??

  • @76steve76 Because in America we have the world's most boring accent in the world and it's very very cool to hear different accents.

  • @VirusMan254 read the info... "Led Astray drummer..."

  • Whoops, my bad.

  • Fonzo you rock!

  • I love youtube. thanks for this Video!

  • You are really fucking good

  • Very nice. I've been a drummers for many years, but never had a good bass drum foot. Oh well, still love being a drummer!

    peace.

  • i enjoyed that..........

  • you're great drummer

  • the intro is not rack tom floor tom its snare and floor together lol

  • hes gotta real nice set there, he must be huge bonham fan. i think i hear that huge 26 incher along with the 15 inch hi hat with the rippled edges? and im gonna guess those are paiste cymbals too. nice....

  • Very nice

  • i see it more as 3 groups of triple notes. all u gotta do is learn the speed on your foot. its not that hard im only 14 and been playin for bout 6 months and this song is fairly easy

  • Your full of shit.

  • fuck be gay skeptic then u fuckin ass.

  • lets see your video pablo. and please when you do, could you send it to me personally? so i can see how off you are

  • i would but wit da shitty quality of da shitty camera i have it wouldnt be any good.

  • yeah right fuckin cocky asshole

  • Awesome triples!

  • wow, all this time i was trying to play triplets on the bass instead of hi hat bass bass. thanks!

  • yup. i thought he did all three hits with the bass when i first started playing. i tried to get my foot to do the triplets. thanks to that my foot is insanely fast and heavy. i thank my ignorance.

  • Yeah that last verse 12 times is a killer. I understand why its different then playin 1e. but, I can play the 1e or a1 much faster. its still the same foot movement? no? is that the right pattern for the rools for thhe chorus LRllrrLR? I have tried so many ways, and seen so many ways, but yours sounds closest to me. Did you read it, or just feel/ figure it out?

    Thanks for the help

  • Dude.I just finished watching and the roll for the solo is somthing that sounds best and you just tought it to me THANK YOU! is it RllrrlR? Caps are accents on toms or snare.man so simple and i made so tough on myself.

  • Why is it we struggle with that skip? we can play 1e or a1 super fast, but i spaz out when i do these. size 15 shoe.could have anything to do with it??????HELP just joined a zep trib band and this is the one tune i can't get and REFUSE to fudge Bonham! I nail it 50% of the time

  • I think it's because playing 3 groups of double notes on the bass drum with just one triplet between them is a lot harder than just one double. You know, what I mean? The broken triplets repeat at least three times in the first verse, then about 12 times in the last verse!

  • yes,your right

  • they're crazy in the last verse. i just keep them going... then throw like two of them randomly. those last two are my favourite.

  • Your honest, thats great.Don't cheat or cheapen Bonham. It shows how his talet was so massive, and he wrote this beat in 1968 !!!!!

  • Your accent is so beast and your a terrific drummer!

  • Great video, thanks a ton.

  • i like you man. u understand your kit well and u've gotta b a john bonham fan lol. your a good drummer and ur gr8 at explainin thepaterns.

1 question? where on earth did u buy ur double floor tom from? i cant find anywhere 2 buy 1!!!

  • This kit is a Premier Artist Maple, which came with one floor tom, but I later ordered an extra one from Premier, though Drum Central in Edinburgh.

Check out the Rock Legend 26 kit on the premier website (mine is the "heavy rock 24") The Rock Legend kit comes in Bonham sizes, with 2 floor toms and is about £1000 retail, but most dealers will give a good discount. Try ebay if you want to buy an extra drum for your kit, I have got a lot of 2nd hand drums on Ebay!

  • Try Highwood drums too if you want a custom made kit. They are a small company in England that manufacture kits to your own specification for very good prices! And if you can afford it, you could get a Ludwig Zep Set, or one of the Accent Zep sets for a decent price. Both come with a 26" kick and 16 and 18" floors. Pearl are also doing a Chad Smith kit which has two floor toms. I'm a total drum geek obviously!

  • VERY accurate lesson. However, there's one thing i may disagree with (up for debate though, just my interpretation!) For the intro hits, i think it's snare, floor tom, bass drum (on the third set, however, he forgets the bass drum) take a listen and tell me what you think

  • Fronzo, Man, great explanation. You got Bonham done pat for sure.

  • Do you know if Bonham used heel toe? Because it's the only way I can play the single-bass broken triplets.

  • so tecnical guy... nice video

  • That was pretty good

  • furthermore...the tuning of your drums is consistant with the tunings Bonham used!

  • cool! Very well taught.

  • i personaly use slip n slide tec but its all about your own pref and how you started out about it

  • me too man

  • with the broken triplets on the bass drum for GTBT i use heel toe which u should use because its really easy and its fun check out my vid of it and maby u can go try cuz i find it much easier than building up.

  • its less control dude, check out my video, which is my first attempt at this beat. I just use a technique where my ankle just moves faster. no slides, no heel toes.

  • fronzo you're the best!!!I love you scottish dialect!

  • nice!

  • You fucking rule.

  • Ok excellent.. you've earned my subscription.. I've always loved Zeppelin and Bonham is my favorite drummer.. I've been starting to play some of his stuff lately and your lessons are a great tool.. Thanks!

  • very nice cover. when i had a double bass those triplets between bass n hi hat were so easy. now this song is a bitch to play. and i just cant keep time with my hi hat, my left foot is pretty useless.

however, when bonham plays the bass triplets off the hi hat, he does just a single snare hit on the 1/4 pattern, he doesnt add the extra 1/4 or 1/8 hit. other than that youre golden ;)

  • Comment removed

  • dude how do you do the triplets on the drums?

  • your hi hat sounds like shit but i like your bassdrum

  • funny, you look like john bonham

    but man, that was good

  • the intro 'quarter notes' are on the floor tom and snare instead of both toms.

  • Thats Bad Ass Dude, But Bonham's Skills Are Just Too Good To Replicate, But Damn That Was A Kick Ass Cover

  • Bad ass!

  • how do you get your bass drum to sound like that?

  • Use very little damping, tune fairly low if you're using like a 20" or a 22", slightly higher with a bigger bass drum.

Old school felt strips placed near the outside of the drumhead work a treat.

  • I'll never get this good.....damn... :(

  • thank you SO SO MUCH...watching it over and over,....when you get to play this song, then you re a real drummer

  • FUCK YEAH MAN!!

  • could i request that you do the very first fill slower?

  • Excellent work. I just need to work on my double bass skills, I'm still a little slow at it, and do you know a place where I can get Drum notation for songs like this? Thanks, and keep up the great work.

  • Learn it with one foot. It's so much more rewarding. And besides, you can't neglect the hi hat part in this song. It's such a powerful part.

  • wow man, safe AS !!! keep up the zep, toke reefer, listen to wishbone ash, drink bushmills and ur life should roll like a rock!

  • your a beast! why didnt you play the song though?

  • great lesson Phrase! 5*

  • great job man!!!

  • good times bad times is my third favorite drumming song ever

    #2-wont get fooled again

    #1- fool in the rain

  • hey thanks, i'm going to take it to my kit!

  • Dude, brilliant video very clear, if your not you should be a teacher mate. Great vid' thanks!

  • dude your pretty good

  • (TOO SLOW)

  • Dang dude you do look like John Bonham

  • Dear Mr. Fronzo,

Thank you for this posting. Ever since the LP came out on vinyl, I have admired Bonham's drum work on this song. With your lesson, I can attempt to play some of these drum grooves.

    -Peter

  • You sir are amazing

  • Good man!

  • im having trouble with the tom fill in the intro but the rest of it i can pretty much do. i used bass doubles long before i started with led zep so i have good practise at that. but the tom fill gets me everytime

  • damn

  • That sounds awesome

  • that is a fuckin brilliant drum lesson

    cheers

  • do u use a double base pedal

    thnx

  • No, he's doing that with just one pedal. I've learned it before and while it is hard to learn, it can be done...just takes a lot of practice.

  • no he not use a doble pedal

    pendejo

  • check out Tim Waterson's videos on heel-toe technique, that's how I do it and its a breeze and takes five minutes to learn

  • Nice job breaking down the beats in your videos. That helps a lot. Thank you for posting. Keep them coming. Very much appreciated

  • wow that was awesome
