The B.C. Marathon winner, Man of Iron, is no longer with Ballydoyle or being trained by Aidan O'Brien. He was sold, and is now being trained by Luca Cummane. Man of Iron has 3 starts for Cummane in 2010. A 3rd place finish in the Fred Archer Stakes, a listed stakes, at Newmarket. He then finished last of 8 runners in the G2 Princess of Wales Stakes at Newmarket. And most recently finished 5th in the G3 September Stakes. On the all-weather surface at Kempton Park.
The horse that won this race, Man of Iron, is not considered to be one of Coolmoore's better colts. He had just won a race at 1m 21/2 fur. prior to Aiden O'Brien deciding to send him to the Breeders Cup for the Marathon. He had lost badly to Mastercraftsman in his tune-up race for the B.C. Dirt Mile at Dundalk on the all-weather. He had also lost to Rip Van Winkle badly when they were 2yr.old's. In Europe, both Mastery and Father Time are considered much better colt's than is Man of Iron.
"Who really won? I won $327-00 on a winner who finished third in 1988. You just move the Camera: Backward or foreward of the Post! " Chuckle! Chuckle. You poor suckers really are the most!!! "
I love all racing but I get a chuckle that 1 3/4 miles is a marathon :). I used to work in a steeplechase barn and they would regularly run 2 miles over fences - now that's a marathon!
2 miles is the minimum distance in national hunt ... no test for a long-distance horse. A grand national at Aintree in the mud ... 4M 4F is a proper test ...
@Nautilus1972 I totally agree with you perspective on the proper length of a marathon race. Unfortunately, American horses have been bred for speed and precocity at the expense of stamina. Also, there's too much inbreeding. Whatever your opinion on synthetics, the biggest positive might be breeders having to look overseas for new bloodlines. On a positive note, they lengthened the 2010 Marathon to from 12 to 14 furlongs (1 3/4 miles). But the purse is still the lowest for the BC at 500K.
