@antknee420 True, there is less CO in diesel exhaust than found in gasoline exhaust, however, the sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen are all present in high enough quantities to equally do the job. For more info, see the CrittergetterOnline homepage and click on "The Crittergetter – An Alternative to Poison"
@antknee420 Carbon Monoxide is not a poison in the classical sense as say Strychnine, Arsenic, or Cyanide. Carbon Monoxide is toxic because it displaces oxygen and causes asphyxiation while leaving zero toxic residue behind. Carbon Dioxide and Nitrogen, the two most prevalent compounds found in engine exhaust, are also toxic in this same manner.
@cklimen You sound like you know what your taliing about, unfortunatly your not right.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless and odourless gas. Even at low levels of exposure, carbon monoxide can cause serious health problems. CO is harmful because it will rapidly accumulate in the blood, depleting the ability of blood to carry oxygen.
If it accumulates in the blood it most certaily left a toxic residue behind.
@antknee420 From Wikipedia (search Carbon Monoxide) so you can verify my information: "(Carbon Monoxide)... It combines with hemoglobin to produce carboxyhemoglobin, which is ineffective for delivering oxygen to bodily tissues." hence my statement of "Carbon Monoxide is toxic because it displaces oxygen and causes asphyxiation" because that is how it works.
@antknee420 Regarding toxic residue; any CO (Carbon Monoxide) that is not converted to carboxyhemoglobin rapidly oxidizes to Carbon Dioxide because CO is highly unstable. There isn't any residual CO in the body because upon the creation of a high enough concentration of carboxyhemoglobin to become toxic, breathing (and therefore CO intake) stops.
@antknee420 Thank you for the challenge and causing me to revisit this information...almost had to break out the old Chemistry and Physiology textbooks because I almost couldn't recall that carboxyhemoglobin was called ...err ... carboxyhemoglobin!
Cheers! and thank you for the intelligent conversation!
Does this work on Elephants? We have a flock of elephants that moved into our back yard, they built a nest in our favourite tree. I don't really want to kill them though. What should I do?
@DuckingNDiving With the 22, unfortunately, you have to wait for one of the little buggers to show itself by which time it could have torn down half your garden. TNT, can you say "Caddyshack" ;) Draw back of both; can't use either of them in town!
@cklimen I've been doing this for 20 years. Took a old 100 foot section of 4in. fire hose, duct taped the leaks, and hooked it onto the exhaust of my Dodge dually with Cummins Diesel. Used it on digger squirrels that were tearing up my buddys almond orchard first. Then used it on gophers and moles in my own yard. Works like a charm.
damn my yard looks so damn ugly. let's kill the mole. >.>i think actually trying to catch it is more fun than just killing it. plus you actually saving it's life in the process is an accomplishment. D: poor mole
@Myaccountbastards The back pressure created using a pipe sized similarly to a garden hose is not good for the 'ol engine (it's actually terrible for your catalytic convertor, valves, and a whole host of other items associated with the modern engine). As we discuss in a side bar on our website CrittergetterOnline: "If the automakers could use pipes of smaller diameters for their exhaust systems, they would have done so long ago and saved themselves a great deal of money."
@JAG9100 at start up and idle, the catalytic converter is terribly inefficient. Under perfect conditions (appropriate temperature, new condition, perfect velocity, etc...), the catalytic converter is 70% to 90% efficient. Older converters and cool running engines even less so.
That small inefficiency is more than enough to take care of the job.
@noclouds111 - Make sure you have all the burrow openings closed or covered other than the opening you're fumigating. Voles typically have a lot of them (openings), some of which may be hard to see.
This method is extremely reliable. If it isn't working, there's an opening somewhere that's allowing the gas to escape. Keep with it, you'll get 'um!
This method of burrowing pest control is extremely effective. It is not, however, always easy.
I've noticed that the area which was fumigated, hasn't had any activity for a few days. Now, the activity is in the front yard, so Mr. Vole may have a relative in that area.
@shadowneko22 I was thinking the same thing, poor little guys, were lucky there isn't an animals above us in the food chain or we might get killed while we sleep in our home too
@dubldeka We have a "work around" for those smaller engine vehicles that can have heat issues with our stuff (some tractors, mowers, ATV's, etc...). Please send an email via the "Contact Us" link in the title-bar of our website CrittergetterOnline for more info.
complete combustion from a car will create carbon dioxide
incomplete combustion form a car will create carbon monoxide (the gas that kills the pests) so if your car complete combusts then the pests will still be alive
@chamblizi A grenade would definitely be more fun, however, it would probably do a little more damage to your lawn than the critter would ;). Regarding "poisoning the earth", anybody who adds any sort of commercial fertilizer or pest control products to their lawn or garden are doing far greater harm than our product - The Carbon Monoxide quickly turns into Carbon Dioxide which is technically food for plants. The small amount of Hydrocarbons and other byproducts are nearly negligible.
LOL, So what if it's inhumane, if you have a veggie garden like I do you don't care how you get rid of them. To add I don't think this will work, I have been doing extensive research on these critters and they will plug their burrows at first sign of fumes or smoke, so unlikely this will work. Seems like cinch trapping or even box trapping is the way to go, since I have pets and will not use poison (strychnine) to eradicate these pests for fear that my pets will get to it.
I agree with mysteryarchitectman, I could make a tube that would be just as effective and wouldn't have any ill effects on my engine or exhaust system for much less money.
But then again, I'd rather just use my rifle and get some target practice ^-^
Hee hee hee hee. This reminds me of the time I tried to gas a skunk I mistakenly caught in a havahart trap. Put a tarp over the trap and let the exhaust gas flow. 45 minutes later, checked under the tarp and the skunk sprayed me!
@TheFutureSeries I wouldn't waste the extra gas, I'd just put the shit inside of a trap and shove your head up in there so you died on your own fumes you fucking useless trash.
