They cannot plummet. If the cable breaks, then they are all engineered to hook on 2 sides. Brakes lock, hooks engage. They then cannot move.

Many elevators now are powered by hydraulics, not cables.

acually not true hydraulic is starting to become old and the new tech is MRL(Machine Room Less) witch uses a small disc size or tiny cable motor
