Also.. alot of people are saying the the fact that 7D can shoot different frame rates is such a plus point.. but is it really? How often are you going to shoot slow mo at 60fps? really?
The fact that 5D has firmware update so that you can shoot 24fps is good enuf for me.. i will still rather just buy a 5D.. AND when i do need 60fps then i will just go out and rent a 7D.. or better yet just use an EX3 to shoot slowmo...
i heard that the 7D uses the same sensors as video cameras.. if thats the case that explains why the 7D videos look like typical video image whereas the 5D looks much more classier.. and like musiluna said "more realistic"...
THe vid images from the 7D looks somewhat flat but the 5D has depth...
it's hard to compare these two cameras simply because the 5D mark II has a full frame sensor, while the 7D has a APS-C crop sensor. You need to use the same lens on both to really see the difference that makes. I have a 7D but i wish i had the 5D's full frame godliness =].
To be honest, i saw better videos with worse cameras, so i guess you make a bad decodification format or you tube did....i know both 5d and 7d are much better than this video.
@bgplotsdotcom I am a Canon user inclusive of making music videos and film, and I must stress without conroversy of opinion that The 7D is a hands down winner. Due to the early release of the 5D Mk II, the hype allowed for the 7D to be undiscovered by the fact that it was made afterwards, so ALL concentrated on the 5D. It has more functions than the 5D and I use it for everything you can imagine. REDS are overcompensated by the 5D while the 7D is true to the color wheel and hue spectrum.
Full frame is a totally different feeling to shoot, atleast what i feel. The 7d dosent give me the same feeling, its really nice but i NEED a full frame camera, i dont get satisfied in my shooting otherwise
@bgplotsdotcom If i´d be using teh camera for shooting botch documentary and horror films. Wich one would you recommend. I´m really confused, though both look great but the mark II jas won such a high reputation.... could you please help me with my choice, thanks!
@nofiction there are few important differences, the decision is urs:
5d II -more sensitive in low light; full frame(not important for me)
7d - has slow motion(60 fps); cheaper.
if u make a decision, it should be based on what i said above.
but there are some other cool things 7d has and 5d hasnt since its newer(less important), plus a very well protected body from dust and moisture(more important).
@laphold The 7D and the 5D have both been shown to work well with slomo programs like Twixtor. But I do understand what you're saying with the priorities.
Actually I took my 5D Mark II in the pouring rain, literally pouring for 45mins with no protection. There was also a lot of mist and steam. Thing was wet like I took a shower with it. Came back and it was fine. It was attached to a 24-70L and that thing got soaked too haha.
I think where the 7D is absolutely better is the FPS and the AF system. The 5D mark II is a superior camera in terms of image quality.
Studio/portrait/weddings i use the 5DII. But the 7D wins for birding/sports.
The 5D while a better image quality camera is slower, and the AF is not as good. And until the firmware update the video will still be shot in 30p which means you have to convert to 24p afterwards leading to more trouble hehe.
upload the original file and you will see a much greater different, this is not how it would look like, you've saved the videofile as a different format, which results with this bad quality.. =/ and yes, i did check the HD-version and not the HQ..
My big goal is to have a full frame in the future, but at the moment the price/value couldn't convince me that it worth that much. Maybe in the future or it will be cheaper, or I will be more rich :D
I own an 500d, and with my 1.4L/35mm in low light it is great for my use.
I'd prefer an 5d MarkII rather than the 7D. I think it is ridiculous in a certain way to build in 2010 not FF cameras with all these features.
so you would say that the 7D is a better choice to get for filming?
because i shot with both camera's for my short, and they both are awesome! im just having a hard time choosing between the two, im probably going to do more filming then taking pictures.. so yea.
If I have to choose between these two I would defenitelly go for 5D because it is great in low light conditions. I am expecting the new 5D firmware that will give 24p, 25p and hopefully 60p ;)
As they say "Ones you go fullframe, you never go back." :)))
7D vs 5D mkII? Is this a joke? You put the good lens on the wrong camera mate :)) If you want to compare you use the same lenses. Anyway the new firmware for mkII is just around the corner so keep your pants on.
the t1i has a way different sensor than the 7d. The 7d is 18mp and the t1i has 15 so how could they be the same. The 7d has much better processing and loser noise. but the low light champion is the 5d mark II cause it is full frame (5d has a larger sensor). Its kind of a dillema cause i want the 7d for video but in reality only need the still capability of a 50d. I don't really shoot that much stills, but I'm not a noob so I don't care for using the lowest end.
If you work with 5D video remember to convert to a usable format or else those MOV files will choke Mac or PC. It doesn't matter. Lagarith is a good codec choice for PC.
For Mac workstations with FCP Vincent LaForet has some conversion tips.
In 2010 the 5D Mark II will have a 24/25p firmware update. The 5DII is def. for someone who does video, but also takes a lot of portrait and product photography.
The full frame sensor plays a huge role, the image quality is far beyond that of the 7D when it comes to portrait/product photography.
In terms of Sports/Bird photography, the 7D wins hands down. And currently its got more video options. And its cheaper.
Sports/bird photography. That's what I do. That's why I'll get a 7d. It's weather-sealed. As for the low-light issue, I don't know if the 5d is better, but IMHO, low light is never a problem: the opposite is (too much light)
Yea for Sports and Birds you chose the right camera of those two choices. I hope you have fun with the 7D.
I've been using both lately...which is kind of a hassle but its great. I don't miss much this way. I get birds and other animals using the 7D on a 100-400 L and then I get all my landscapes with the 5DmII.
I did switch the 100-400L to the 5DmII and yea its just too sharp. I LOVE IT. haha.
@cyrano298 Just so you know, the 5d is far better in low light, as it's full frame, the 7D would be better for birding because of 1.6x crop. I believe the 5d is also weather sealed. I've never had issues with too much light though, only if I'm aiming directly at the sun =)
I'm trying to find a good full frame SLR (The 1ds Mark II is not an option unfortunately )So It's between this two. 7d obviously isn't as pricey, and has newer features, but 5d mark II, I was told, still has a bigger sensor. Does this mean the 7D isn't full frame after all?
The 7D is the best VIDEO camera for a budget (quality for cost). It has multiple frame rates 24p, 30p, 60p, etc and it has exposure control. The D90 is not good for VIDEO, the quality of even the CANON T1i is better and SHUTTER JELLO is worse on the D90 also.
Go trough a menu to start recording on the 5D??? Not on my 5d... I just hit live view and the button on the center of the big round button and it starts recording....
i wondering, do u think the both camera have the same dynamic range in the video, or 7d has less? can u may comparison dynamic range (in shadows and highlights) with different ISO in 5 and 7D. thx
The 7D is better overall, cause of it's manual exposure, fast autofocus and rec button. The 5D is better quality HD especially in low light, but you have to go through a nemu just to start recording. it's just not practical.
Thanks for post, I really would like to get one of these cameras, but price is an issue. If the 7C is better overall (and $1000 cheaper), then that works out much better for me.
In low light and high ISOs 5D mark II will give you much noisless results, because of the larger sensor, on the other hand for wild life photography EOS 7D has X1,6
cropping factor which for example converts 400mm lens to 640mm and 400mm + 2Xadaptor to 1280mm. They both use same batteries, so for me it is better to have them both ;) It is cheaper than to buy 600mm lens ;)))
haha both? I don't have dat much money for both at the moment. I'm still a student. And I heard the 7D does a pretty good job under low light too cause of its dual D4. But that's just what I heard I think I'm just gonna get the 7D, the only reason dat keeps me sticking with the Mark 2 is because of the ability to get really wide-angle shots. I do lotsa sport's photography and also work under low-light alot. Hope you can give me some recommendation.
the dual D4 can't compensate the much smaller sensor on the 7D, so you will have to make a choice depending on the needs you have. For me the safer and more expensive way is 5D mark II, because it really beats the 7D in low light ;)

theres hardly any difference in picture quality
megapixels have little to no effect on the picture quality of video
the only big thing is
the 7D is sturdier
and the 5D is full sized (sensor wise that is)

5d: full sensor, more megapixels, nuf said. 7D might shoot better video, but as an overall camera the 5d wins, no doubt.
