I had a version which allowed you to do a super jump. On level three, you could get to the top with two big jumps and on small ladder climb. Happy days, playing this in the computer room at school.
Some of the soundbytes on this (e.g. your character dying, and the sound that plays when you jump over or smash a barrel or fireball) and the Acorn Electron version of this game appear to sound like they're taken from another Donkey Kong clone, called Crazy Kong.
@ClassicTVMan81 Sound was not sampled. It was created by keying in numerical values, like turning the knobs and switches on an analogue synthesizer. Basically, you would sit for hours and hours and experiment with different values, but you never really got exactly what you wanted.
I used to be terrified of this game. It always made me look like i was crap at computer games. I even owned a BBC Micro for a brief period in the 90's while jobless but I was afraid to get this game in case it dented my ego too badly. The 1st and 2nd screens weren't too bad if you concentrated but that 3rd one a nightmare. Thanks :)
haha i felt the same. I played this when i was about 6 years old in the '80s but struggled on the later levels- also made me feel completely incompetent!! :P
Wow this must have been a long while ago, and still jobless lol. However, since then, i have mangaged to get an emulator for Windows. I think I'll have a go at this game, see if I'm harder than last time. (or it will collapse my confidence again.)
I think this was the second BBC B game I ever played, and one of my favourites. (Never seen this opening screen though; definate Mario clone on the left). I got quite good at it after a while. I remember when I made it to the third level and it had the really haunting 'slave' music (well that's what I called it).
It's different enough to avoid being an exact duplicate, whereas Acornsoft Defender was too close to the original by name only and became Planetoid. Acornsoft Snapper was too close to PacMan by the character design, hence little men in v.2
I remember playing this game at school! Computers being used in education was a fairly new thing then and it was this and 'pob' that we were allowed to play! lol!
It had four levels...Then you started from level one again, only it was slightly harder (like with a lot of these games). Was there ever an end I wondered?
I wonder how Acornsoft got away with all these arcade game clones? I remember "Zany Kong" which was basically the same but with blue metal girders. Heck even the level layout is the same as Donkey Kong.
i had this game it was hard back in the day and i had jack and the beanstalk and chucky egg

Contraption was my favourite game. The animation was extremely good, especially for a little known company like "Icon".

This brings back memories!
We used to have a school computer club at lunchtimes and would play this on a huge black and white television.

Better than the nearest Speccy equivalent for graphics- not really surprising.

Don't blame Acornsoft for this one! It was Program Power. Great Game.

Call me crazy, but don't copyright laws protect the companies from such a thing?
