I (a simple minded person) do not dismiss God from Evolution. What I can not do is reconcile millions of years of death and disease (via evolution) with a good God who calls His creation "GOOD". Why use death to bring about a deathless perfect world, then call that process good. When Jesus finds his friends grieving over the loss of their brother HE WEEPS. he does not comfort them by endorsing death and disease as God's great creative good evolutionary tool. Actually, officially and historically, the Catholic church is fundamentalist and does hold to a literal interpretation of Scripture -- to the point that they interpret the bread and wine in the Last Supper naratives to *literally* be the flesh and blood of Christ in the Eucharist. The official Cathecism says that the literal sense of Scripture is the primary sense. Moroever, the historic position toward Genesis is that it is factual history. It is a recent aberration.

The Church holds that God created all things from nothing; God created all things directly; the Scripture is to be read primarily in its literal sense; the human person was directly created by God, body and soul. The Church has no official position regarding evolution. Period.

The Pope as Herr Ratziger allows belief in evolution. Whether it is the theistic (unscientific) or the scientific variety is unclear. The Pope has not spoken ex cathedra as yet. Divine revelation is still awaited.

The Vatican may be composed of eminently intellectual and scientific persons but that does not mean they are infallible. Galileo is a good example of Vatican stupidity. The Pope is sensible enough to avoid such a controversy.

It does not say directly where the light came from. Genesis 1:3 certainly indicates it was a created light to provide day and night until God made the sun on Day 4 to rule the day. It could have been done this way in order to show that the sun does not have priority over the creation. Evolution as well as paganism give credit to the sun for the wonder of creation.
