my pit lucy passed away many years ago, but this song reminds me of her. i'm new to country music, but the first time i heard this i had to have the cd. thanks for posting this moving video.
This song means to me, there is good in all living creatures, and we all need some help sometimes, but too often too many people turn their heads the other way. Why are people so quick to judge, rather than care. WHY!
My husband would hum this song while feeding our dog, Jake. Always laughed at the joke, until yesterday when our dog Jake passed away. Now I cry hard while listening to it. Thank you for posting this. I had never seen the video until now.
I use to listen to this song when i was younger with my father , now my father passed away and now when i listen to it i start to shed a tear :[ this is one of the nicest song i have ever heard
I just got back from the Improv Fest at SHHS. This was my groups prompt and when I found out I almost started cry. Then we preformed our play and all I have to say is RIP Jake, I love you and I miss you so much!
dedicated to my best-friend..BOBO--some one at the sands motel,In okc.,shot ,and killed him, last night..BOBO was a jack russell/chihuahua mix,and loved everyone, and everyone loved him...I hope the person, who killed him,ROTS IN HELL!!!!
I got in my car to drive to the hospital, my papaw had just passed away. When this song came on. I can listen to it 20 times over and it still gives me chills. RIP Papaw Jr.
Very pretty song, makes me cry to this day hearing it. It's rare to have a lasting friendship, with trust as epic as the song speaks of. Hard to find, indeed.
this song is about a man thinking back to his carefree childhood with his best friend and their dog..and how things have changed through the years with peoples attitudes..
Whatever happened to these guys, they were really good. I saw them open for Garth Brooks in Bismark ND in 91 a few weeks after I got back from Desert Storm
honestly? do you people even read and analize the lyrics. Shoot, even the video tells it all, did anyone watch and analize the video? It's not specifically about the dog or about *gasp* being gay. It's about unconditional positive reguard, acceptance, and love. It's what the two friends had for eachother and what the friend who died and the dog had for eachother. And it's about the inherent trust in these relationships as evideced by the dead friend entrusting Jake to the living one!
Thanks leonard. Lost me with the 'dean' comment. Not sure who dean is. Which isan't surprising. I do great with logic/analytical things. I suck with interpersonal/people stuff. Is one of the main reasons I love animals so much. They and their motives are simple to understand. Take my Shepherd. I found her at the pound so she is MY dog. But my child ALWAYS comes first, that's the breed. Simple.
This is a great song.My Momma saw me sitting in our fields with my good ole dog beside me and told me to listen to it.Yeah he has been my best friend right through it all I sure do love him.
Thank you for posting this.I lost my best friend this weekend,a Husky mix dog that meant the world to me.Thought about this old song and came to listen to it.Anyone who has had a dog like mine will understand.
Thank you, Sparky. It has been a tough two weeks for me.My Bandit always met me when I came home...rain or shine. No love like that of a faithful dog.Sending you a hug for your own loss, so sorry to hear of it.Bless their hearts, faithful and true.
The two boys were best friends and the one asked the other "If I die before I wake feed Jake"...Well he died and his friend went to get Jake...Its a matter for friendship, loyalty and trust. I really didnt see a gay thing in the song and I have been listening to it for years.
Oh man...This brings tears to my eyes. I lost my border collie Jake 10/24/07 and it still feels like it was this morning. Some people just dont understand the loss of a pet......
Whether it is person to person or person to pet, unconditional love between one another is the absolute best! To any animal lover this is the By God best song ever, pesonally I can not listen to it enough! Thanks to: As always You Tube for the space, ksryanc for the upload, Pirates OTM for doing a great tune, and as for the rest of us: COUNTRY ROCK ON SHINDIGGERS!
Most songs can be interperated in many ways. The only thing I can interperate about this song is the one individual (whether it be human or pet) that stands by you when the rest of the world turns their back on you. The whole gay, hooker, drugs thing are just examples of how the world could turn their back on people. It takes that one individual that stands by you.
fuck u little cry bitching ass babys and suck it up animals ar worthless and not to be loved and i wouldnt care if they all were wiped away u little bitches cry my hands full
@travis8o4 : Good news is that we (people who think dogs are better people than people are) feel the EXACT same way about YOU! None of us would shed a tear if you or your entire family died. We wouldn't cross the street to pee on you if you were on fire. We'd rather see you and your family burn, while we save the neighbors dog. And personally, I pray to all the gods of creation that that exact situation comes to pass.
2 days ago i said goodbye to my oldest dog chloe. 15 years we did a lot together & i know there will be another dog like her but i have another dog so i'm trying to move on but chloe was family 7 i'll always cherish the time we had together even when we literally were lost in this world
I think the meaning is don't judge people. Like the wine O, people say he's worthless but the singer and wino's mother would disagree. And the earring verse where he says what we are and what we aint......does it really matter.
Upon reviewing the lyrics, I would say this song isn't just about a dog. The words suggest the theme is more about friendship, and not just between a man and a canine.
I've always loved this song, and I agree it's mostly about his dog. But it's also about the man's life, his disappointments and loneliness. And I'd never noticed it before, but that line -"Now if you get an ear pierced, people will call you gay. But if you drive a pickup, they'll say no, you must be straight. What we are and what we aint. What we can and what we cain't. Does it really matter?"-is really interesting. And sad.
Ok Jakob , first off its whole life, not hole life . Please do explain for me how one can say something in a song but it not have to do with what was said ? If ignorance is truly bliss you must be one ecstatic SOB.
Great song and video. Didn' t get the gay comment. Sad. But did get the vid. Heard this song years ago when it came out. It' s as good and to the point now as it was then. Dogs rule.
As a Marine I got 4 tours of combat under my belt and lots of OTW ops. Though harden, I shed a tear when I his this. Nobody sings a sad song like a country boy. I'm from Texas and I lord knows I KNOW!
my dog almost died after her 2nd set of puppies...i cried but im proud to say i did everything i could and shes slowly makin a recovery...you get to where they are just like you kids i have a daughter of my own and i love her to death...but i also love my dog...on and my husband too... lol
I love this song, I had a black lab ( championship bloodline ) as a kid, her name was Jake, yup a female dog named Jake..I was 13 then and that dog was my absolute best friend. We just moved to this house , and it had a cyclone fence around it, as we went back to get another load, she climbed over the fence and was on the shoulder of the road heading our direction, and some low life ran her over...This song relates to a lot of people, we all find ourselves at the crossroads in life..
That being said if I ever find out who killed my Lester you better look out! He was a true friend and a beautiful animal. Just because he may have been an occasional neighborhood "Lothario" does not mean you have to kill him. Get your bitches spaded if you are so worried about dealing with pups. LOOK OUT YOU BASTARD! (there I have vented)
The guy is speaking to his wife or girlfriend. He says he's standing at the crossroads in life, meaning he has to make a choice that will decide his future. One choice is to keep touring and singing his songs about the unfair things in life and possibly lose her. The 2nd choice is to stay home and spend time with her. In the video the guy can see the result of both choices. A lifetime of love, represented by the old couple or loneliness represented by the hitchhiker and the man on the porch.
This song is about friendship and what a guy sees in life and wants his dog taken care of when he dies. This was my brother's favorite song. So, anyone, that disrespects it an idiot.
OK you idiots out there I listen to country music my hole life this song is about the dog named jake ....has nothing to do with gays or anything ....yes is say it in the song ,....not taliking bout gay people ....strait gear shift you numb skull ,biird brain Freaks.
@JacobBlackLoverBaby It will be ok...lot's of people just dont get it. You would have to be an animal lover and a reasonably intelligent human being to truly appreciate this song. A classic from a very talented Mr. Danny Mayo , rest in peace brother.
omg!! i remember this song! i love it i have a dog that means this much to me and i tell you what ill send my husband out the door before my dog. i used to listen to this too. i miss old songs like this they really make you think...
People got all weird on this song saying it was about gays, well who cares what it is about, "does it really matter" it is an awesome song one of the best country songs ever written!
Check out Miranda Lambert's new single "The House That Built Me," it is absolutely stunning and is along the lines of "Feed Jake." It shows that she isn't another pop teeny blonde singer!
A dog's devotion to his master is immeasurable. If no one had come to claim Jake, believe me, he would have stayed at that grave for a very long time.
People can learn a LOT about love, companionship and loyalty from dogs. I had a "Jake", too...little pug, named after this song. He was the best dog I've ever known.
i had to put this song on a week or so ago. after almost 6 months of hard fighting i lost my jake, her name was lexi. this video makes me cry thinking of her. she was my best friend. always hard to say good bye after 13 years of being there
If someone had never seen a country music video and you were trying to describe what a country video is like... this is the one you would show them... It epitomizes country videos. -- Great Video
I bet you sit at home, in your parents house, and question why you have no friends but try to hide your pain by posting useless shit on youtube. Am I right?
My dog is named "Jake".... after, and because of, this song. And he is a good dog, Jake... My current heart dog. I do hope there will be someone around to Feed Jake... when I'm gone...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I think that anyone who has a dog should love this song. I know it's a song about a gay man's dying wish, but I think that even those of us who are straight can appreciate the value of a good dog. I've owned at least one for each of the last 20 plus years of my life. They are awesome animals, if you know how to treat them kindly. I honestly wish they'd play this song more often.
This song and vid were made during the time when AID deaths were decimating the entertainment industry. My take is his friend was gay and die of aids and he was coming back for the funeral. The whole pickup truck part has meaning. Notice how he picks that kid out, he knows. The song speaks to all people who live on the fringe of socity and are forgotten, the wounded vet, the bums the hookers the abused and yes the gay.
@whacker5819 It was also made during the gulf war, and the friends death has been interpreted as war related. It was not specifically intended to be about an AIDs death. The look between the actor and the cowboy is a stare down. He's saying "you don't belong here." They're all cowboys and drive pickups and he's obviously well dressed, from the city, and driving a fancy car. The video is about returning home, and finding out you no longer fit in.
My "take", is not just my opinion. It is from an interview with the executive producer for the company where the "Feed Jake" video was produced and directed. They interviewed her because of the controversy over this video (people thought he was attending the funeral of his lover who died of AIDs, and the look with the cowboy was a "cruise"). The AIDs death and gay lover theory was also dismissed by the band's management firm. Wow, 18 years later, and this video is still making people talk!
This used to be one of my dad's favorite songs. I think he kind of lost track of it, but something reminded me of it so I looked it up. I don't think I understood it very well when I was little, but now I get what a powerful song it is. It's one of those that I hope I'll never be able to listen to without crying a little.
I remember when this song first came out. I saw the video on TNN and it hit me like a ton of bricks. I was a metal head at the time. The video made me cry. From that moment on I have been a country music fan. I still cry to this day when ever I hear the song.
This is a great video. I would put it up against any video made today, and it would win. One of the best songs ever, too. I wonder who the main actor is?
I know everyone has thier own story and each persons pet is so special to them. I found my dog as a stray and she was in bad shape, after numerous visits to the vet she got healthy and I got a best friend for life. I remember dating a girl and we were both sitting on the couch and here comes my dog pushing her head right in the middle of us as to say to the girl get away from my master. My dog was actually jealous. So many good memories but sadly she died almost 1 year ago. I sure do miss her
How it relates to how people are and how inocent others such as our pets and are young children don't judge anyone based on religion color our race,You can't get much real then what this song is about.God Bless!
I vividly remembering my mom taking me to school when I was about 7 and hearing this in the morning sometimes... It would make me so so sad and yes because of the dog but also because it would make me think of anyone i loved dying. When you are that young you can't understand loss as well.
Kinda funny, I left home long ago, got hurt in Iraq and again in Afghanistan. Came home, wife left, family grew apart, and all I have left is my dog; but he's been there every step of the way. That is unconditional love...he always knows when I'm down. This video definitely strikes home; I just hope he goes before I do, that way I know he's taken care of all the way to the end.
I love this Beautiful song,it tell's the true about love between owner's and there animal's.Ever time I hear this song I feel like crying, cuz it really tonchess my heart with such a wonderful feeling of knowing there are alot of real animal lover's out there in this world today !!
i had a shepherd collie mix named jake from birth till just a few months ago right after my 12 birthday it was so so hard to put him down every time i hear this song it makes me think of him . no dog could ever ever replace him he was one of kind r.i.p jake
this song is about a friend who dies and leaves his dog to his best friend. it has nothing to do with religion or anything else. a dog is mans best friend i miss my dog Niles more than anything. so for me this songs a real tear jerker.
I had a black lab named Jake...he was my best friend grew up with me from the day i was born to 2004......it was hard to lose him he was like my brother and my best friend....i miss him so much this song makes me cry
I can relate to this song, I had an Irish Setter named Jake and he passed away rrecently nad it broke my heart. I can't listen to this with out shedding a tear for my dear friend whose gone, Rest well Jake. I miss you
Me,either.I lost a pretty good friend in an OTJ accident and happened to have that tape in my truck's player.I couldn't listen to this song for years afterwards.
I'm not sure how but it feels like it connected to me somehow but I have never had a dog it's weird

@JacobBlackLoverBaby It will be ok...lot's of people just dont get it. You would have to be an animal lover and a reasonably intelligent human being to truly appreciate this song. A classic from a very talented Mr. Danny Mayo , rest in peace brother.

Check out Miranda Lambert's new single "The House That Built Me," it is absolutely stunning and is along the lines of "Feed Jake." It shows that she isn't another pop teeny blonde singer!

I usually don't like country music, but this is so amazing. I want to cry. ):

A dog's devotion to his master is immeasurable. If no one had come to claim Jake, believe me, he would have stayed at that grave for a very long time.

People can learn a LOT about love, companionship and loyalty from dogs. I had a "Jake", too...little pug, named after this song. He was the best dog I've ever known.

The song speaks to all people who live on the fringe of socity and are forgotten, the wounded vet, the bums the hookers the abused and yes the gay.
whacker5819 2 years ago
@whacker5819 It was also made during the gulf war, and the friends death has been interpreted as war related. It was not specifically intended to be about an AIDs death. The look between the actor and the cowboy is a stare down. He's saying "you don't belong here." They're all cowboys and drive pickups and he's obviously well dressed, from the city, and driving a fancy car. The video is about returning home, and finding out you no longer fit in.
mslucas75 2 years ago 6
I agree with your take on the video at the truck scene. No matter how people take the song it's a wonderful song.
happysmoke18 2 years ago
My "take", is not just my opinion. It is from an interview with the executive producer for the company where the "Feed Jake" video was produced and directed. They interviewed her because of the controversy over this video (people thought he was attending the funeral of his lover who died of AIDs, and the look with the cowboy was a "cruise"). The AIDs death and gay lover theory was also dismissed by the band's management firm. Wow, 18 years later, and this video is still making people talk!

Is it just me or is everyone missing the whole picture? The song/video is not really about the dog at all. It's about the human condition.

@smackchick It's about compassion and tolerance.

I vividly remembering my mom taking me to school when I was about 7 and hearing this in the morning sometimes... It would make me so so sad and yes because of the dog but also because it would make me think of anyone i loved dying. When you are that young you can't understand loss as well.
cutelovelylisa 2 years ago
Kinda funny, I left home long ago, got hurt in Iraq and again in Afghanistan. Came home, wife left, family grew apart, and all I have left is my dog; but he's been there every step of the way. That is unconditional love...he always knows when I'm down. This video definitely strikes home; I just hope he goes before I do, that way I know he's taken care of all the way to the end.
