Americans did not want any part of any European war. Sadly as Poland crumbled to Nazis, the BeNeLux crumbled, France crumbled after the Germans simply walked around the Maginot Line through the BeNeLux, and British Expeditionary forces had to be evacuated back to England, the USA still did not want to enter yet another European war. My kids are French educated and when my son was in 'troisieme' studying WW1 he asked in class why no mention of Britain being an ally of France was at any time made.
His teacher asked the class of 27 how many knew that Britain fought in WW1 - not one kid put his hand up and when the 'prof' confirmed what my son said the French kids were shocked.
Same exact thing happened with my daughter 2 years later. No mention at all made of Britain in WW1.

Every French person knows that the USA entered WW1 in 1917 on France's side. However the level of ignorance in France concerning Britain's involvement in WW1 is staggering.
Petain was a very competent and humane general who managed his brave French troops well in defending Verdun.
However, had Petain not been able to persuade Haig to start the offensive at the Somme two months earlier than planned, Verdun would have fallen. By starting the campaign early many more British troops died than would otherwise have been necessary and the eventual losses at the Somme were worse than losses at Verdun.

Did you know that the British Army lost over 1million men fighting the Gremans as France's ally in WW1? The French lost 1.3million.
French kids are taught about the US coming into the war in 1917 but are not usually taught that Britain was fighting to defend France from the beginning in 1914 to the end in 1918.
Its also the case that Verdun would have fallen if it wasn't for Haig giving into Petain to start the Somme offensive some two months earlier than originally planned. Read about it.
I understand that. But the British did a lousy job the first month of the Somme. They learned from their mistakes as far as how to properly use artillery and attack in mid afternoon vs. early morning. But admit that July 1 was an enormous failure that could have been even more catastrophic if the Germand had more advantage in manpower. The French lost forts and individual battles at Verdun but they did not get massacred to the extent of the British in July 1916.
I'd rather say that the British generalship during the first stage of Somme was just as bad as the French in August 1914 (cf. the battle at Morhange, were 20,000 French infantrymen were killed in one day, charging in open fields towards German fortifications).

Yet the British Expeditionary Force (aka British Army) fought to protect France (the fighting in Belgium was to protect France) at a cost of one million men (about 200,000 being commonwealth troops the remainder being British (English, Scots, Welsh and Irish)).

I hardly see how the US army could "know about Auschwitz since 1940", as there was hardly a US army in 1940, and the Nazis decided only in 1941 to destroy the Jews in Europe the Auschwitz camp became an extermination plant only in 1942. Sadly as Poland crumbled to Nazis, the BeNeLux crumbled, France crumbled after the Germans simply walked around the Maginot Line through the BeNeLux, and British Expeditionary forces had to be evacuated back to England, the USA still did not want to enter yet another European war. Some of you might remember hearing of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor Hawaii. This was the reason that we American's finally acquiesced to our enter the war.

My kids are French educated and when my son was in 'troisieme' studying WW1 he asked in class why no mention of Britain being an ally of France was at any time made.
His teacher asked the class of 27 how many knew that Britain fought in WW1 - not one kid put his hand up and when the 'prof' confirmed what my son said the French kids were shocked.
Same exact thing happened with my daughter 2 years later. No mention at all made of Britain in WW1.
But both times USA's entry in 1917 taught.

Petain was a very competent and humane general who managed his brave French troops well in defending Verdun.
However, had Petain not been able to persuade Haig to start the offensive at the Somme two months earlier than planned, Verdun would have fallen. By starting the campaign early many more British troops died than would otherwise have been necessary and the eventual losses at the Somme were worse than losses at Verdun.

Frenchmen shouldered much of the burden of turning back the invading Germans. Our nation contributed much in 1918 but it is understood millions of Frenchmen had already died before then. It's interesting to discover that, outside of France, the only French-German battle people remember or mention is Verdun, which was indeed a huge, 8-month long hell. But the battle of the Marne in Sept. 1914 was even more decisive, and the mad 1915 offensives in Champagne and Argonne were almost as bloody as Verdun.

Did you know that the British Army lost over 1million men fighting the Gremans as France's ally in WW1? The French lost 1.3million.
French kids are taught about the US coming into the war in 1917 but are not usually taught that Britain was fighting to defend France from the beginning in 1914 to the end in 1918.
Its also the case that Verdun would have fallen if it wasn't for Haig giving into Petain to start the Somme offensive some two months earlier than originally planned. Read about it.

I understand that. But the British did a lousy job the first month of the Somme. They learned from their mistakes as far as how to properly use artillery and attack in mid afternoon vs. early morning. But admit that July 1 was an enormous failure that could have been even more catastrophic if the Germand had more advantage in manpower. The French lost forts and individual battles at Verdun but they did not get massacred to the extent of the British in July 1916.

I'd rather say that the British generalship during the first stage of Somme was just as bad as the French in August 1914 (cf. the battle at Morhange, were 20,000 French infantrymen were killed in one day, charging in open fields towards German fortifications).

The Germans could not take advantage due to enormous sacrifice they were making to the South at Verdun. British did help out the French no doubt at Verdun and yes credit due. The point was Verdun saved France and Paris The Somme relieved pressure but was too costly. Due to bad strategy the British failed at a decisive vicotry and stalemate returned.

No doubt the strategy pursued by British top brass was poor - Haig was not a very gifted soldier.
The quality of all British top brass at this time was particularly mixed and this was exacerbated at the Somme by mostly inexperienced conscript British soldiers.
It was famously said after the Somme that British soldiers were "...lions led by donkeys".
Britain lacked a general of the calibre of Petain.
Lloyd George famously said that Haig "..was brilliant to the top of his Army boots".

Yet the British Expeditionary Force (aka British Army) fought to protect France (the fighting in Belgium was to protect France) at a cost of one million men (about 200,000 being commonwealth troops the remainder being British (English, Scots, Welsh and Irish)).

twmapsion, of course we've learned that the British were with us from the start of WW1. We have many reminders of the Entente Cordiale, of the Tommies and their sacrifices. There is a Pont Kitchener (bridge) in Lyon, a rue Lord Kitchener at Le Havre, at least a statue of Douglas Haig, etc. And a Cercle Interallié in Paris.

I was pretty shocked at the fact that my kids' history teacher in their French school and the text book she used ignored the fact of British involvement as France's main ally in WW1. The British army was involved from the very beginning in 1914 to the very end in 1918.
The British Army lost 960,000 men and had 1.5million men severely wounded.
Ironically, there was significant mention of the US joining the war in 1917 (they lost 144,000 by the end of the war in November 1918).

il y à une erreur dans le documentaire, la bataille de Verdun était une guerre de mouvement .C'est pour cela que le Fort de Douaumont fus pris, il était conçu pour une guerre de position. ( je reviens d'un voyage pédagogique ).

babal, un fort est forcément conçu pour une guerre de position! Oui, la bataille de Verdun, comme toutes les offensives de 14-18, visait à reprendre la guerre de mouvement - en l'occurrence, pour détruire ce saillant français qui gênait les Allemands depuis 1914. Douaumont a été pris, non parce qu'il était immobile (!), mais parce que Joffre l'avait fait désarmer pour envoyer les canons là où l'on en avait le plus besoin : au front. Les Allemands en ont profité. C'est logique.

as i told before, we cant blame a country just because some people dont love it. all the countries are hated this way or that way by some people. and the people who, lets say, unwillingly serve us r nothing to be worried about. until they open their eyes, we will have already closed most of of their eyes, by kilin of course. and i think that comparing israel with those puppets is the biggest mistake. how can anyone compare the sheep and the shepherd just because they are in the same valley?

I hardly see how the US army could "know about Auschwitz since 1940", as there was hardly a US army in 1940, and the Nazis decided only in 1941 to destroy the Jews in Europe the Auschwitz camp became an extermination plant only in 1942. You should not write fantasies about WW2, it is too serious as a topic.

no no no, soviets and americans knew about it same for british they knew about auschwitz and let me tell you that Nazis started to "collect" jews in gettos in 1938 or 1939 in Poland and allready made the plans for massive killings! and USA knew about that! and also some pictures of 1943 of the camps have been found in some US army archives. but they just let jews get killed cause nobody liked them and als thats why europe send them in palestine

Again, you are confusing different periods and events. Nazis could not "collect" Jews in gettos in 1938 in Poland, as they invaded only this country in Sept. 1939. Plans for massive killings were drawn at the Wahnsee conference in January 1942. Neither your assertions nor your conclusions are serious. Please learn history before writing through your hat.
