It's so stupid when interviewers ask actors to compare their roles with Mr. Darcy. These novels are so completely different in every possible way that I really don't get this forced comparison. It was the same in Armitage's interview for North&South. Rochester is basically the opposite of Darcy and Thornton is nothing like Darcy either.
That aside, I think Stephens was an amazing Rochester. Truly the best I've seen (1983, 1996, 2006, 2011).
Toby is an incredible Rochester, and Ruth Wilson was a fabulous Jane.
Toby is also an exceptionally good actor, he's always excelled at parts like villains or emotional men, Shakespearean characters and arrogant toffs in period crime drama. But he proved even more versatile last summer in the comedy 'Vexed', he was killingly funny in that.
Whatever role he plays, he brings great depth to it.
He's hotter in Jane Eyre. I think i like the kinda rude and tough guy turning into the romantic hero ;) and, even though it's not his own, I LOVE his hair as Rochester!!
He is more handsome as mr Rochester, I could hardly see any similarities lol! He has a similar voice but sounds more posh as Rochester, in the fourth episode he says to jane: 'why did he do that?' I think that's the poshest he sounds in the whole series. He is an amazing actor, it runs in his family! Love him :)
Love him but OMG he looks so different from the series, his face looks fatter in real life, did he put on weight or what?? Still love him AWESOME ACTOR!!

Toby was the absolute BEST Rochester...but my goodness! He's soooo different from the character. It seems like Toby is this carefree, unromantic, friendly kind of guy. How he managed to pull off the role of a dark, haunting, and passionate man is a MIRACLE.
@dtunlimiteda just because he seems carefree and unromantic doesn't mean he IS. I'd say he portrayed Rocherster far too well to be a stranger to passion and darkness.

Great actor, really charismatic and charming.
Just saw him live at the Donmar Warehouse in London performing in " A Doll´s House" next to Gillian Anderson.
And he obviously has the good genes from his great mother Dame Maggie Smith :)
