KATRINA DID NOT JUST HIT NEW ORLEANS!!! The damage here in Mississippi was horrific. In fact, what damaged NO was the levee break. What do you expect when you build an entire city below sea level. The point is it wasn't just black people who were affected. Everyone was! FEMA screwed everyone.
@042008alli I went through that area in Sept 07, two full years after Katrina. Biloxi had cleaned the damage up, and was already rebuilding a lot. NO, thousands of buildings still tarped up. Not just houses, but Walmarts, banks, car dealerships. I was proud of the people of MS, the people of NO, not so much.
While my prayers go out for you guys in Mississippi, you got to understand, we live in a pretty large, metropolitan area. It took a lot longer for us to repair and get things up and running than it did Mississippi. I'm not ignoring you guys plight though, yall took it pretty hard standing up. But the Gulf Coast of Miss. is much less densly populated than the N.O. metro area.

While I didn't lose family members who still live in the area below, in, & above New Orleans, I did lose a few former classmates who went to college & returned to our little town. I still feel hurt & angry that there was no more assistance provided for EVERYONE! If CNN could get to the convention ctr on Bourbon St. why couldn't help? People died on TV at that ctr. We have entire cities built on fault lines, in flood plains and in areas where tornadoes are known to occur in large numbers. Most of the Netherlands are over 30 feet under sea level. The difference between them and the U.S. is that they care about their citizens so they built a billion dollar levee system to protect them. My mom who held a high ranking position in New Orleans have been fighting for the funds to build a levee system to protect New Orleans since hurricane Betsy. Now its too late
Whether not people want to realize it, everything is about race! Don't think for a second that racism isn't clearly happening today, just in a more civilized manner. As for the people of NO, yes the population was mostly African American, along with people of other races and social statures. No Katrina did not discriminate when she took lives. But the gov't chose to tear down the poorer community to refill it with more substantial income while they can't ever afford to live there anymore.

I believe that someone should've been held accountable for the levee breach, because the army corps of engineers lied in the original reports when the levee's were first built saying that they were deeper than they actually were. Im not saying President Obama is perfect but when the oil spill hit he was down here walking the beaches and not flying over. We need to start holding these government officials accountable, because if we don't stand up for something will fall for anything.

They were supposed to b esympathetic, but they showed young, able bodied men standing around bitching and moaning about The Man and waiting for someone to come and save them. I saw able bodies men being helped onto boats by other able bodies men who weren't trying to help AT ALL. Then they'd switch to the "rescue parties" and many were people who were themselves affected, but they helped THEMSELVES then went to help others.

@hstg98 if everyone knew the hurricane was coming, why didnt they leave? i was watching tv waiting for my army unit to call us up to help out. we got the call. waited a day , and only 29 people were sent out of 500. the leadership in louisana falied , not the federal govt. the state of louisana didnt ask for enough troops and equipment to help, so all we could do was send the few guys and the rest of us watched helplessly as it unfolded. pissed me off that we werent able to send more help.

@oneNonly1fullofsome Let me get this straight...tsunami in Japan equated to a rise of maybe 5 feet of water that ranoff or dried up in a matter of days...whereas Katrina equated to a rise of about 20-25 feet ALONG WITH hurricane winds that flooded a sub-sealevel city for weeks and was the worst natural disaster in recent memory...I wasn't even there and I know Katrina was far worse than a simple "unusually high tide" in Japan...

It's not like this is some huge secret. Even the Army Corps of Engineers will tell you from their own tests and studies that their levees failed due to under-cutting. Had the city canals been cut off from the gulf, the lake, and the river, the storm surge would not have been able to get into the city like that.

@MsMadia I lived in the lower parish of Plaquemines (aprx 60mi south of NO) years ago but eventually moved away. While I didn't lose family members who still live in the area below, in, & above New Orleans, I did lose a few former classmates who went to college & returned to our little town. I still feel hurt & angry that there was no more assistance provided for EVERYONE! If CNN could get to the convention ctr on Bourbon St. why couldn't help? People died on TV at that ctr. That was so wrong.

We have entire cities built on fault lines, in flood plains and in areas where tornadoes are known to occur in large numbers. Most of the Netherlands are over 30 feet under sea level. The difference between them and the U.S. is that they care about their citizens so they built a billion dollar levee system to protect them. My mom who held a high ranking position in New Orleans have been fighting for the funds to build a levee system to protect New Orleans since hurricane Betsy. Now its too late

Whether not people want to realize it, everything is about race! Don't think for a second that racism isn't clearly happening today, just in a more civilized manner. As for the people of NO, yes the population was mostly African American, along with people of other races and social statures. No Katrina did not discriminate when she took lives. But the gov't chose to tear down the poorer community to refill it with more substantial income while they can't ever afford to live there anymore.

I believe that someone should've been held accountable for the levee breach, because the army corps of engineers lied in the original reports when the levee's were first built saying that they were deeper than they actually were. Im not saying President Obama is perfect but when the oil spill hit he was down here walking the beaches and not flying over. We need to start holding these government officials accountable, because if we don't stand up for something will fall for anything.

@haywood16 Ohhhhkay. I did that and I'm not surprised there are rich people out there with grand plans for humanity. That doesn't really prove anything, though. Giant carved stone tablets only prove there's a pseudo-intellectual rich asshole with a flair for the dramatic and a taste for Old Testament imagery coupled with a vague environmentalist philosophy. That doesn't mean or prove anything at all. If you're going to make conspiracy claims, you'd better be able to back it up with proof.
