He deliberately told the Iranians to delay the return of the hostages till after his election in return for concessions.
Hence, the hostages were released immediately after Reagen's ascendancy to the presidency.

I think they let them go because there wasn't any gain in keeping them. There was already a crippling economic embargo placed on Iran, and a failed rescue attempt. The idea that that the hostages were let go because the Iranian leadership feared one American president and not another is ludicrous.

As we know from current events, aggressive rhetoric from a U.S. president isn't going to do much to change Iran's behavior. And how can you say bombing would have been the correct course of action, when events showed otherwise? Iran scored its political points and there was no longer any gain in holding them.

After all these years, I respect President Carter. He was not perfect, but he was very principled and had integrity. He sought to bring peace in the US and with other nations around the world. He respected all races, and truly wanted the average american to have the best chance at living a good life in America. Overall, in spite of some of his mistakes, he will be remembered as a good man and a president who truly was for the people...God Bless him...

There is no US President worse than GW Bush! He and Cheney take the all time record on stupidity and gross mismanagement of the US. When Carter was President the largest US banks were not teetering on the brink of collapse....not so for GW Bush...you have already lost 2 and who knows how many more will collapse. Gasoline is over $4 a gallon with no reduction in sight, and no plan to reduce US dependence on oil.

I also lived in the 1970s and I know that high interest and unemployment rates, and high gasoline prices, were not unique to the USA in the late 1970s; there was a world-wide recession during that period that was not the sole responsibility of the Carter Administration, as you have incorrectly concluded.
Furthermore, Carter did not start a war in Iraq that has now lasted longer than WWII!
