  • no shame. she just laughs it off! lol

  • Crazy, I thought it was some sharing nonsense, such as the man paying the rest of whatever the salad cost. It turned out to be some blind idiot.

  • I said that the black guy stole her salad. Now I feel like a fucking racist D:

  • Watching this in response to a college class I'm taking in school, and how there are signs and signfiers and the perception theory. and plz dont complain about some amount of word essay's you have to do on this. I have an entire 13 page paper due based on this video.

  • I had to play it with two my friends in spanish, but we didn't have the black make up :P

  • lols everyone is watching this cos of class, so did i. XD

  • well, why haven't any of you posted your essays here so we don't have to write one?

  • Thi is not about Racism! It's truly a study of perceptions....

  • i watched it in media studies

  • English class!

  • This film may be interpreted as her being racist, but I'm just gonna throw this one out there. Don't you think that she is more OCD than racist. The black guy is in a smart business looking outfit, and she was still freaking at him touching her stuff. Go forward a little bit and see at the resturaunt she cleans the fork. Maybe she just doesnt like people touching her stuff and would have dissaproved of anyone - black or not!

And the resturaunt guy was like "twat" ;)

  • racist old bitch

  • I don't see what's so great, the plate was obviously on the opposite side of the table and the booth did not have her bags in it.

  • watched this in health class today, just knew i had to look it up

  • (SPOILERZ) This didn't work on me! As soon as she sat across from the guy, I was thinking, "It's probably not her booth since her bag isn't there." When the guy didn't say anything like, "No, I just bought this." I figured I must have been wrong. If you try to tell someone they're eating your food, most people don't respond with grunts and mumbling. It also kind of didn't make sense how the guy ordered the salad, but appeared in the dining area behind her.

Still a great little film, though.

  • I found this short film difficult to masturbate to...

  • I first saw this film 20 years ago. Used to think "I wish all Americans...heck, everyone out there...could watch this"...

now they can, provided they have a computer or access to one.

Lets keep our minds and libraries 'open'.

  • Massive thanks for uploading this. I hadn't seen this in ages and always thought it was called "Coffee for Two". Thankfully I noticed it listed at the UNLV Short Film archive and immediately did a search here. Love this film.

  • the point of the 3M hat was to throw you off: you could see that her bags were not there, the first thought is "he took her stuff and is wearing some of it with the ticket on and all". Very good video. Had it been a black guy looking scruffy, would he be able to get the salad for $1.50 instead of the $3.00 it really cost?

  • Bravo Adam!

I love the style and whether you meant to make it an homage to the past or shoot period style it worked, anachronisms didn't bother me one bit.

    Well done!

  • I love this short film! This film perfectly shows a change of this lady whithin 10 minutes. The story is complete.

  • Simply one of the finest narrative short films ever made.

  • You all dont get it!! The black man she ate the luch off isnt homeless! If you watch closly in the beginning he walks by and he is working at the staion as a janitor. The lady has some kind of altimers because she forgets the bags and she doesnt think she has a fork when she really does. She is the homeless one. The man has on a 3m hat those are more expensive. the ladygets her luch cheaper did you hear the man wokring there say 1.50 was her total before he said it was 3.00 and he still

  • Aww the black guy looks lonely at 7:19

    ....This film is beautiful!!!

  • This makes me sad and happy.

    =)

  • THATS MY FUCKING SALAD YOU HOBO i have to write essay :(

  • WHAT A WASTE OF A SALAD WOMAN. WHY DIDN'T YOU GIVE IT TO THE DUDE BEGGING FOR COINS? MY GAWD.

  • i've loved this film since the first time i saw it in freshman year :')

  • My favourite film ever

  • this film would have been cool...if i didn't have to write a 1500 word essay on it.

  • @jwoodford90 I agree!

  • @jwoodford90 im stuck with 700 words lol gl

  • @GarGet1 Same here, lol.

  • @GarGet1 Oh wait... hey Garret, it's Ian

  • @jwoodford90 You have it rough I only have to do a 700 word one

  • @MrMATTHASADEATHWISH same lol

  • What I love about this film is that the man reaches back for the salt - and most likely sees her salad, or at least her bags and could probably infer the mistake she'd made. I grin when that happens. Adorable.

  • i knew it... but only because the highest rated comments had to share that THEY didn't...

  • This is really a film you can appreciate, brings back memories.

  • that was amazing!

  • I first saw this at a workshop on Cultural Relations when I was in grad school. Thanks for posting!

  • 0:40

  • i had to watch this at school.......

  • great script:)

  • lol i got rejected

  • Very well made film, and very good acting.

I already encountered the idea so I guessed the end after she saw him eat the salad, but still enjoyed the movie.

  • you can but the lunch date on the cinema16: american short films dvd from amazon or just google it...

  • so she took the wrong seat, stole his lunch, and still he bought her coffee. touching

  • Splendid piece of film making.

  • Is The lUnch Date downloadable or available for purchase?

  • the guy on 00:51 sec was the same guy she had lunch with :)

  • i have to do an english project on this aaaaaaaaghh

  • amazing

  • I read about this and just had to see it for myself. Love it!!

  • It's weird that this won an academy award when it's basically taken directly from a well known urban legend

  • I'm seriously impressed with the ambiguity about the film. Huge props to the man for his kindness, to put up with a woman like that. I definitely find it disheartening that she just breezes by the man in the end asking for change though at 08:35. It doesn't seem like she learned a thing, which I guess is to actually realistic. The social commentary is wicked intense here, packed for just ten minutes.

  • @octocoffee I thought the same thing, about ignoring the man near the end. But now that I think about it further, I remember she barely had enough to pay for the salad. (Which is odd, though, considering she's carrying a Bloomingdale's bag. But hey.)

  • @xbriannaxbananax it's because she was pickpocketed in the beginning by the guy who ran into her

  • @shakespearesdead or maybe she just spent all her money on that blooming dales crap ever think of that or is do you just think that every black guy pick pockets you?

  • @JAMbowser Yes I do!

  • @JAMbowser then what happened to her ticket

  • @shakespearesdead Ahh that is where you are wrong, if you look at about 1:21 when she runs down the stairs to the train, she drops something.

  • the guy who directed it went to columbia

  • fantastic. has inspired me ..

  • 4:17 That's MY Salad. lol

  • 2010 AZ State Univ Pedro Multicultural

  • amazing! unlikely film study for the late 80s

  • MY SALAD

  • A wonderful little film! I knew from the start that she was sitting on the wrong table cause her bags were missing, but as the plot progressed I was surprised by the characters' reactions to each other. I was disappointed at the end because I am not sure if she changed at all (she didn't thank him properly and didn't even look at the beggar, or give him money - but she lost her purse didn't she?). But her sigh at the end gave me hope for her to change her prejudices. Brilliant!

  • Bad case of dumbitchitis. That was horrible, assuming that someone stole her lunch, when she didn't take ONE step further to find not only her own lunch but ALSO her bags. Even if her initial train was missed and her money was thieved because of bumping into someone, people of the same color are different people.

On an analytical note, she was the only prominent female character in the short. Was misogyny on the creator's brain?

Stereotypes are fun to joke about, but have no applicable value.

  • @bigwildo010 this film is old, first of all. This is when political correctness didn't interfere with an original concept to appease easily offended people. Try to take one second to appreciate the message, which by the way, you probably would have never thought of on your own.

  • @seabass0591 It's not that old.. it was made in 1989.

  • What a beautiful little film. A friend of mine told me about it on the bus today. He said ... it had told him something about prejudice and preconceptions. Remarkable.

  • amazing little movie. I am part of the ADD generation so I love short movies !

  • amazing little movie. I am part of the ADD generation so I love short movies !

  • great video to start conversations on unconscious bias

  • love it!

  • A nice version of an old plot!!

  • This short was fantastic. I don't believe the black man is aware that her salad is in the next booth. That's why he snatched his plate back when she tried to take it. His way of saying "you can't have my plate, but if you're that hungry, I will share with you". Even better, he was nice enough to treat his hungry "lunch date" to something to drink as well.

  • She probably got up feeling that she didn't have to thank him, since it was "her" salad in the first place, and he was probably shaking his head because after sharing his food (off his plate no less) with a stranger, AND buying her something to drink, she didn't even have the decency to say "thank you" before leaving. LOL! Wonderful film!

  • @MrBTRDAYZ your wrong it isnt that the lady is homeless she carries houshold itam in her purse and her bag is wrinkled or old the man he is wearinga 3m hat and is able to buy coffee for two and a salad the lady is given hersald at half price. he knew her sald was be hind him he looked back twice!! and didnt you see him working as a janitor in the beging you people need to look closer!

  • there is some racial prejudice in this film.

  • This sort of video really helps you develop your critical thinking. :)

  • Was it her wallet at 1:16 to 1:21

  • Whatever the background it's a beautiful story. :)

  • She sat down in the wrong booth and she thought he was homeless and stealing her salad.

    Looks aren't everything.

  • @pfjb123 i think it was his own salad he bought, she just sat on the wrong table as shown in the end o.o

  • nooooooooo.............

  • The woman actually was sitting at the wrong table. After she left the restaurant, she discovered that she left her bags. When she went to retrieve them, she saw that her salad along with her bags were at her original table untouched.

  • Which means she was eating his salad and thought she was eating her salad and thought the afro american was eating her salad which she thought she was sharing which actually when the afro american realized the mistake started sharing his salad with her.

I don't know if she realized what was happening.

  • @pfjb123

You make an interesting point :)

  • i love this short film. I saw it on a field trip and fwll in love with it ever sice then. I think everyone should watch this its a good film, and balck and white just makes it better.

  • A very clever way to demonstrate how "invisibly" racist we are..

  • This is such a cute film! I just saw a student film version of this by a youtuber named wheels4hextall, you should go and check it out too. It's more modern and he/she changed it up a bit but all in all I thought it wasn't bad for someone in the learning process. He/she only received a couple of comments, one being from a hater already. Stop by and check out this person's version of "The Lunch Date and give some kudos and encouragement. I don't even know this student but the hater stuff bugs me!

  • Hahaha wow, I was feeling sorry for the lady

  • If you watch it again it makes even less sense that guy wouldn't say anything to her while she eats off his plate, much less buy her coffee...

  • the guy understands why the lady is doing so. he knows the lady is sitting at the wrong booth.

  • saw this in classs and loved it

  • saw this in class today and thought it was great

  • saw this in class & loved it :) it makes you think in someone else's perspective.

  • At 1:21 you can see her wallet fall out of he bag. but u have to look really close to her bag

  • thats not her wallet thats a piece of the glasses that broke

  • wow. i did not notice that but that makes a big difference in the story. Thank you!

  • that was nice of the guy to bring her a coffee

  • Beautiful!

  • What an enchanting short film I have ever seen... this is truly moving for something we confront everyday things.

  • the first time i see this film was at the new york film academy i like this film alot

  • same here :)

  • Loved this film the first time I saw it, and ever since. And I will admit that it "got" me. I was sure the black man had stolen her lunch. And I was ashamed, and learned something special.....

  • Nicely done. One tiny criticism that only New Yorkers would understand: the action takes place in Grand Central Station where Metro North commuter trains come and go. At 1:58, you hear the announcer calling out the station stops for a New Jersey Transit commuter train. NJT originates out of Penn Station only, not Grand Central.

  • This sends shivers down my spine every time i watch it. I love it!

  • This clip is beautiful..

Were can I find more like this?

  • Hi~^^I am Japanese.Today,I saw this movie in "Short Short Film Festival Asia 2009 Opening ceremony"I like this movie very much!! So I glad to see again this one. Thank you~~

  • I like it, but i like Douglas Adams version better. Go read, "So Long and Thanks for all the Fish".

This version doesn't portray the awkwardness the other person has to be feeling in the situation.

  • I need to find a copy of the script for this. anyone know where i can get one online.

  • This was a student film that ended up winning an Oscar!

  • wonderful... SEED 2009!!! NRWD!!!<3

  • haha brilliant. loved it!

  • hey I remember watching this in my sociology class

  • Oh! That's the song at the beginning. I'm not sure about the other music. The one in the middle sounds a little like "I Fall in Love Too Easily" also by Jule Styne, but it may not be. As for the last one, I have no idea. First one is definite, though.

  • The song on the soundtrack is "I Don't Want to Walk Without You" by Jule Styne. And I love the message of this movie.

  • LOL That was funny.

  • wow you must be pretty ignorant.

  • Oh I see genius finding something boring is ignorant? It's called an opinion.

  • @cheap: yes it's an opinion. a very boring kind of opinion: you are only telling us about your attention span, hardly an interesting piece of information.

  • What you think i'm going to write a full blow by blow review? I didn't dig it.Why do you care? If you made the film or worked on it grow some thicker skin. Rejection is part of the game.

  • who knows how this sountrack is named?

  • We studied it in Film Class because it shows how, particularly in short films, actions accomplish things and dialogue is very unimportant in film.

  • We watched this video during my foster care training, the point was to have you STOP and learn the whole story before you pass judgement, or in our case before you punish a child for something that is wrong.

  • Amazing film...we watched this in my AP Psychology class the other day. I found it interesting that while watching it, not only does it point out the woman's flawed perception(s), it plays on the viewer's

  • WOW hahahah soooooo she pretty much stole that guy's salad...

  • And he shared his lunch with her as any gentleman would. I love this film and have been looking for it for over 20 years. Thanks for posting it—it's truly a gem.

  • its beautiful and lmao my class watched this during bridges so do me soft

  • such a sweet and epic short

  • I first saw this movie at the Mill Valley Film Festival in 1990 and it's still one of my most favorite short films. Brilliant!

  • When i first saw this, i immediatly saw, her bags werent there and pointed it out to my younger brother who was showing it to me

  • Same here.

  • awesome

  • So funny

    Really makes you think!
