Yes, rap is poetry on a rhythm, although it does contain lots of slang, sort of new age language. Also, the style of rap is usually about a character, often the rapper, which is considered the style of lyric poetry. Some people, usually older generations, don't understand that and see rap as loud music with cursing and lots of bass.
