Mere Haggard is the best musical artist alive today. This song just states the simple fact that he is white. There's no malice or racism in Hag's music. He's just has pride in who he is.
Another line that people get angry about without reason is the "two kinds of fairies" line from "My Own Kind Of Hat." Merle doesn't try to be hateful, he just writes about what he sees.

Merle is definitely not a racist. he is one of the exemplary human beings of our time. He is one of the few country artists who has addressed racial issues in the realm of community (that is individuals who live and strive together) in song. I direct you to two examples: 'Irma Jackson' and 'Go Home'- two fantastic songs about interracial romantic relationships...also check Waylon Jennings' "Willie and Laura Mae Jones'- Waylon tells us racism is a byproduct of collectivism in our urban existence.

The fact is there is a double standard regarding being proud about your race. When white people try to vocalize that they are proud about who they are, they're blasted for being racist. That is all this song is about, being proud about who you are and being true to who you are. You don't hear Merle saying anything along the lines of what Eoin said about white people in his posts. THAT is racist, not this song.
