I had two Oldsmobile Cutlass Cruisers with these large diesel-engines during the 80's. What a sound and what a nice drive. In these days fuel prices and road taxes in our country make these cars much too expensive, but hearing that sound, wooooow.....
In 1995 when I used to sell 2500 GMC pickups. This engine has quite LOUD rattle in person. Its too bad GM got cheap as usual and just increased the bore to increase CID and HP. It would have sounded better and had more torque if the stroke was increased.
@mpwelk Or reliablity, ask any troop. They break down more than they run, the 6.5 diesels are pretty much boat anchors. The military needs to either sign a contract with cummins, MTU Detroit, or Isuzu to put better engines that are more reliable for our troops in the hummers. Why they are still using these pieces of junk that were outdated in STANDARD gm pickups by Isuzu made v8 turbo diesels I do not understand.
im thinking about buying a 6.5 diesel with about 269000 thousand miles i think and i was wondering how hard that is on the engine. and how reliable are they.
Can this thing be tuned with a programmer? I seen a really good diesel mechanic who specially worked with fords show tons of videos were guys would juice them up to a lot of horsepower and just destroy the engines lol! He had tons of videos on the defectiveness of the ford diesel the 6.1 or whatever were the head gasket would blow and water would get sucked into everything and eventually destroy the whole block lmao!
@JohnFromSpace Wow, that motor is just as clean and spotless as the motor in my chevy. Glad to see someone else who takes care of their truck. I am not afraid to use mine, but I keep it clean& serviced! Nice truck man! That 6.5 sounds great!
Yeah I think all old diesels sound great. The new diesels make crazy power but the old one just sound badass even though they are low in the power department.
Simply the best, im running it for 2 years now, not one problem! i just glow a bit extra if its very cold. mine has 210.000KM on it and running fucking strong! but yeah... it likes to drink a lot! 5 kilometer per liter, and some 15w40 every 500KM
I know, but I really dont like sound coming out of the engine bay. I wont have a choice to switch to a diesel as my need changed hence me looking at this 6.5 turbo diesel, trying to find out if it's reliable or not.
I would try my best to find one with a decent service record, check to see if the PMD has been relocated, Ask to see a cold start once its warmed up pull off the oil cap and if excessive vapors are coming out of the fill tube I would pass that means its getting lots of blow by.
A well taken care of 6.5 is a great motor but like any other vehicle one that hasent been well taken care of will be junk.
Yes, i mean lot of things can happen with a 12yo motor and the reason im looking at the 6.5 is because I heard it wasnt as powerfull as other engine, but is said to be more economical. Im mostly interested in one from the original owner. And why would the pmd be relocated? is it good ? whats the tradeoff?
YEah the 6.5 isnt powerful at all, it wasnt even powerful for its time and the 454 gas motor out does the 6.5 in every way.
It is efficient though I average 15-21 MPG in this truck no way you can do that with a 454 from the same ERA.
The PMD is the Pump Mounted Driver it controls the injection pump and in stock form its mounted on the pump which is located right in the center of the engine bay and it gets hot resulting in premature PMD failure. Relocated a 6.5 will be more reliable.
you convinced me, 15-20 mpg+ is awesome. But there is one other person before me on the one i want to buy, so im hoping he doesnt take it or find something expensive to fix to make him back up. I want it because of the trim it is.
Lot of people bash on the 6.2/6.5 but I mean it's diesel, what can go wrong? pump and electronics. I dont have experience with diesel and I really apreciate your input. Ill post a video of the truck if I successfully get it
As long as you keep up with the basic maintanence like oil change every 3000-4000 miles (Diesel oil accumulates soot fast so you shouldnt go to long without changing oil) and change the Fuel Filter once a year and not use the 6.5 to tow 15000 pounds you'll be fine.
The 6.5 is a light duty diesel and if you use it to just haul stuff in the bed or tow your quads in it'll make a sweet ride. With 20 MPG its got a 600 mile range per tank.
Im mostly worried about cold canada winter making the fuel thicker, and causing premature wear on the pump.
Would it tow 10 000 pounds? And that's the neat thing about the 6.5, it does the same mileage as my 4.3L(synthetic oil change at 5000km). Id mostly use it to tow a trailer with cars from 2200 to 2500 lbs cars on it. I think it could tow 2 of these cars. Rest of the time id be unloaded and enjoying the crewcab space.
I live opposite of cold climate, I live in California. I'm sure all 6.5's in cold areas have the block heater. Just keep it plugged in when not in use and Always put additives
I say stay in the 5000-6000 pound range in towing and you'll be ok.
I think the 3500's with 4.10 gears is rated for 8000 if you use a 5th wheel.
But most of them are rated for 5000-6000 because of gearing.
So with the trailer and cars you should be a little under capacity which is always good.
Havent seen much diesels with problems in hotter climate.
I can't plug it at work or at the mall. Only at home. Maybe cycle the glow plugs several times before starting ? Or make the fuel preheater work a minute BEFORE starting it. Im concerned about reliability because ive seen too many diesel german cars crap out here.
Diesels either last a really long time or have early deaths. It seems like its based all on how well they're kept.
The only realy difference in maintanence with Diesels VS Gas is more frequent oil changes and changing the fuel filter regularly. A good anti Gel additive with everytank is a good idea with every tank so that your diesel wont go bad.
You'll be fine there are plenty of diesels in colder climates. Hope the truck your looking at is a good one
The bigger the diesel, the better it fairs in the cold. the one im looking at is a rare clean one, original shinny black paint (only black one ive seen locally), no rust, only one owner...it's 2000$ over market price for a reason. leather seats and all. I never check the 3500s, else I would have seen fast enough to be the first one. oh well, ill only know friday if its sold.
Actually old guys hate noisy diesels and actually like how the new diesels are so quiet. They can careless about the crazy power. I know a few old guys with the new ones.

I just saw the word diesel engine ever built, i owned a 98 chevy silverdao with that same engine, when hot if you turned it of, it would not restard because of the overheating of the injection pump, the turbo, broke down 6 times in a 3 year period. The happiest day of my life was when i got rid of it. Ford and dodge were better, duramax diesel was a good revolution. Now i have a toyota d4d 07 hilux. Thats a diesel! long live toyota.
They no hot rod friend. Turbo blowing up is like saying I hate Dodge because they use a ford transmission. Chevy did not produce the turbo's for these. I agree with the injector pump bull. But it's not the pump there's a heat sync that wasn't suppose to get hot but did. So 50 bucks and that problems fixed.
Whether people give you that little thumbs down or not, your right. The 6.5 was a boat anchor. 6.2 and the duramax were great motors. I'm a cummins guy anyhow. Real diesel right there
Its not that bad a motor. Just underpowered. Its a good motor if you want a 20 MPG truck for cheap since the resale value on these are cheap. Thankfully all the fixes are in place and most of them are cheap.
I wont give you the thumbs down and I'll give you the thumbs up. Cummins is a great motor.
I fully agree with you, these engines are wank !! boat anchors come to mind, i worked for 2 years fitting them engines into range rovers, what a fucking mistake and waste of time, constant problems, constant breakdowns, absolute shite engines.
Well if you knew how to work on them, it wouldn't be a problem. I drive a 99 6.5 TD with 205k miles on it, replaced a few small items here and there, changed the oil, blah blah. It still goes.
well i was just reading along and i agree with all of yall but if i do recall chevy was still producing the turbo 400 into the early 90's because the 90 91 and 92 chevy SS 454 Trucks had Turbo 400's in them
no, that would be the 6.0 from Ford even diehard ford guys ADMIT it's the worst thing ever made from Ford and my dads cousin owns a diesel repair shop and the trucks he sees the most is Fords with 6.0 powerstrokes
no, the 6.0 is a great motor with a small flaw, and there great to get power out of, there great on gas, and our shops tow rig has never had any problems
The worst diesel ever made is the GM 5.7, the best, or one of the best is the 7.3 International untis(Powerstroke and otherwise) The 6.0 was just rushed into production to keep up with the rest, and a flaw was over looked. When that flaw is fixed(500-1000$) the will last as long as any other properly maintanied diesel.
of course that one was garbage because it was just a standard 350 block they used to make it and it never lasted past 100,000 and another problem they had with the diesel 1500 suburbans is the transmissions were going out alot because they put a normal turbo 400 transmission to a diesel engine and that diesel just ate those things alive
GM trannys have always sucked on anymotor. The 5.7 could have been ok if they had reeinforced the block and it would have been awesome if the had let Detroit build it(6.2)
the Turbo 400 ( believe it's a 400 could be a 350) in my Blazer has done me well so far, I have over 130,000 miles on the truck and holding up very well. We had a Chevy Astro with nearly 300,000 miles before it went out, if you want crappy trannys look to Dodge, and yes I agree with you, Detroit should have built their 5.7 I want to see how good the new 4.5 will be in the new GM's they are going to have it on the 2500 Suburbans and 1500 trucks but it will not be built by Isuzu
Hey man, nice truck! That engine is very clean! I keep my engine clean also. Its kind of sad when you see somebody's truck from the outside and it looks good, then open the hood and it looks like its a mud cake.
But then again the new ones can make crazy power =)
I'm not even bothering with this truck. I'll live with my 0-60 in 12 seconds.Still sounds better then the new Diesels. Its more grumbly and truckish, just way slower =P
You could make your 6.5 run like the new ones, just needs a few choice mods, like programmer, intake, exhaust, turbo and intercooler. The programmer will make the most difference.
i did a relfashed computer in my 6.5 as well as free flowing exhaust, soon to be a different intake, no intercooler(yet). those mods alone make it a whole different truck.
actually both the 6.2 and 6.5 chevy diesels are indirect injected. Same thing with the 6.9 and 7.3 IDI fords. Only the 5.9 cummins had direct injection
I was looking at a Colorado 4 banger and Sierra with a V6 but one of the reasons I went with the diesel is because it just sounds cooler and probably gets similar economy to the Colorodo and Sierra.
Here in America the only Diesels in cars I think are in the Volkswagen Jettas. I dont know if you guys have Jettas there but thats about it here and I rarely see them around.
Well they're getting quieter, they even have those on luxury cars like 7er BMWs, S mercs etc. Yeah, we do have Jettas... They're our version of your prius, only lamer:P It's the idea of having people with diesels (aka bought them because of the low fuel consumption, no cash etc) and they think they rule the streets. God I hate them.
well thay might have something there... I like to know my enemy, so I'm pretty informed on all types of engines. diesels have much more torque down low, and electric & steam engines dwarf that. so from standstill till a few mph, it's plausible. Eg. with same gearing, a '98 bmw 530d can beat a '00m5 till ~ 10kph (torque curve). But after that... sayonara!
In response to frydizzy10 me also being a mainer with a 6.5td yeah i went to connell and they did a great job replacing the ds-4 pump on my 95 k2500. My truck has 325,000 and runs great. It averages about 22mpg. Change the fuel filter when it gets cold though cuz it will rob your mileage. Also, i was told to get an anti algae solution for my fuel tank because that can break off and clog the filter, killing the mpg. Good luck, and send me a message if you are ever interested in a 6.5td
Got one in my 96 Suburban too. It's had a couple injection pumps. Also had a glow plug relay and a harmonic balancer. Thats it! All in 225,000 miles. Still has original injectors, but theyre needing replaced pretty bad.
You need to look for cracks or loose pieces of rubber in the back of the balancer. It will be sloppy too if its getting bad. When it gets really bad it will make alot of noise. At that point you better get it fixed quick. Mine didnt need one until about a year ago. Its got 225k on it now.
i thought id take this opportunity to eavesdrop haha... ive got a 1998 silverado k3500 single rear 6.5L with the remote pmd mount. i bought the truck from a guy who claimed to know nothing about the stalling problem i discovered a week later... anyway, if you havent done it yet, it would be wise to relocate the pmd before its too late and the part is damaged. although everyone bashes the 6.5, its a great engine.
Its on my to do list. I still take my Buick on road trips because I dont trust to take my 6.5 until I address the PMD issue. I heard heath is the way to go and its pricey.
after i found out about the pmd failure i looked up a couple of truck service shops up here in maine... i found a place called connell diesel, which is just an average diesel shop that specialized in fuel injection products...
anyway, they recommended a heat-sync through stanadyne (they also had to replace my pmd through stanadyne), as well as their harness kit. i would try finding a place local to you before you order something online. heath diesel has a great reputation, although i have never used any of their products. good luck with your truck!
I had two Oldsmobile Cutlass Cruisers with these large diesel-engines during the 80's. What a sound and what a nice drive. In these days fuel prices and road taxes in our country make these cars much too expensive, but hearing that sound, wooooow.....

no, that would be the 6.0 from Ford even diehard ford guys ADMIT it's the worst thing ever made from Ford and my dads cousin owns a diesel repair shop and the trucks he sees the most is Fords with 6.0 powerstrokes
cumminsturbofan101 3 years ago
no, the 6.0 is a great motor with a small flaw, and there great to get power out of, there great on gas, and our shops tow rig has never had any problems
orbitofdoom16 2 years ago
idk about that try telling that to my dads cousin
cumminsturbofan101 2 years ago
The worst diesel ever made is the GM 5.7, the best, or one of the best is the 7.3 International untis(Powerstroke and otherwise) The 6.0 was just rushed into production to keep up with the rest, and a flaw was over looked. When that flaw is fixed(500-1000$) the will last as long as any other properly maintanied diesel.
orbitofdoom16 2 years ago
of course that one was garbage because it was just a standard 350 block they used to make it and it never lasted past 100,000 and another problem they had with the diesel 1500 suburbans is the transmissions were going out alot because they put a normal turbo 400 transmission to a diesel engine and that diesel just ate those things alive
cumminsturbofan101 2 years ago
GM trannys have always sucked on anymotor. The 5.7 could have been ok if they had reeinforced the block and it would have been awesome if the had let Detroit build it(6.2)
orbitofdoom16 2 years ago
the Turbo 400 ( believe it's a 400 could be a 350) in my Blazer has done me well so far, I have over 130,000 miles on the truck and holding up very well. We had a Chevy Astro with nearly 300,000 miles before it went out, if you want crappy trannys look to Dodge, and yes I agree with you, Detroit should have built their 5.7 I want to see how good the new 4.5 will be in the new GM's they are going to have it on the 2500 Suburbans and 1500 trucks but it will not be built by Isuzu
cumminsturbofan101 2 years ago
what year is your blazer? Ford has trannys down, your astro had the 4l60E, the 4.5 is on hold indefinatly because of the financia crisis
orbitofdoom16 2 years ago
1996 Blazer, but I do wish they would make the 4.5 but yeah unfortunately they are not making it at least for now
cumminsturbofan101 2 years ago
if you have a 96, im pretty sure you have a 4l60E to, because they stopped making the 400 in 89ish
orbitofdoom16 2 years ago
o my bad, International made it whatever you get what I'm saying
cumminsturbofan101 3 years ago
how about the 5.7 litre diesel?
randknu 2 years ago
the worst attempt at a diesel from GM
cumminsturbofan101 2 years ago
Hey man, nice truck! That engine is very clean! I keep my engine clean also. Its kind of sad when you see somebody's truck from the outside and it looks good, then open the hood and it looks like its a mud cake.
WhiteTiger91 3 years ago
New or used we pay a pretty penny for our rides so why not keep them clean =)

I LOVE THAT SOUND
scott93257 3 years ago
if you run out what does bleeding the whole system mean?
dominiccook12 3 years ago
It means you need to get all the air out of the fuel tank
JohnFromSpace 3 years ago
out of the fule tank? dont u mean out of the fule lines?

What year is that truck ? runs fantastic
hockeyroks4ever 4 years ago
Hey its a 1999. Hopefully it'll run great for a long time =)
JohnFromSpace 4 years ago
I got a 92 and it looks like its gonna be going for a while
hockeyroks4ever 4 years ago
Mine has 83,000 miles
I read that the main thing is change the injectors at 100,000 and the harmonic balancer at 100,000 and these should last a good amount of time.
Have you done those 2 things already?
JohnFromSpace 4 years ago
Nice sound, almost as nice as the 5,7 diesel sound....
Dieselolds 4 years ago
duramax has a funny noise
maybe its the injectors or valves not sure
s172mch 4 years ago
I think they sound good, their just quiet. Diesels are just getting quieter and queiter in general.
JohnFromSpace 4 years ago
yes they are, you can thank the common rail system and higher fuel line pressure for that!! :)
RNAGENETICS1 3 years ago
But then again the new ones can make crazy power =)
I'm not even bothering with this truck. I'll live with my 0-60 in 12 seconds.Still sounds better then the new Diesels. Its more grumbly and truckish, just way slower =P
JohnFromSpace 3 years ago
You could make your 6.5 run like the new ones, just needs a few choice mods, like programmer, intake, exhaust, turbo and intercooler. The programmer will make the most difference.
BigChief427 3 years ago
i did a relfashed computer in my 6.5 as well as free flowing exhaust, soon to be a different intake, no intercooler(yet). those mods alone make it a whole different truck.
iamdave0887 3 years ago
dont forget they are direct injection engines
DieselDemon18 3 years ago
actually both the 6.2 and 6.5 chevy diesels are indirect injected. Same thing with the 6.9 and 7.3 IDI fords. Only the 5.9 cummins had direct injection
dodgecum93 2 years ago
thanks for pointing out my typo didnt even noticed i typed direct instead of indirect lol
DieselDemon18 2 years ago
I wish my 106 diesel sounded like that. Instead it sounds like a fucked petrol engine
hardcoretam 4 years ago
nothing like the sound of a diesel wish i had one
JORDYWORDY06 4 years ago
I was looking at a Colorado 4 banger and Sierra with a V6 but one of the reasons I went with the diesel is because it just sounds cooler and probably gets similar economy to the Colorodo and Sierra.
JohnFromSpace 4 years ago
then come to Europe... You'll grow sick of them, believe me........
matts242424 4 years ago
Are diesels in passenger cars still all loud?
Here in America the only Diesels in cars I think are in the Volkswagen Jettas. I dont know if you guys have Jettas there but thats about it here and I rarely see them around.
We like Prius's here. They suck =)
JohnFromSpace 4 years ago
Well they're getting quieter, they even have those on luxury cars like 7er BMWs, S mercs etc. Yeah, we do have Jettas... They're our version of your prius, only lamer:P It's the idea of having people with diesels (aka bought them because of the low fuel consumption, no cash etc) and they think they rule the streets. God I hate them.
matts242424 4 years ago
Thats funny cause we dont have many Diesel cars here but like I said we have the Prius and those guys think they own the streets.
These guys are crazy on the Prius club someone was bragging about how the Prius can beat the Ferrari Enzo from 0-6
Yeah 6 MPH =/
JohnFromSpace 4 years ago
well thay might have something there... But after that... sayonara!
matts242424 4 years ago
In response to frydizzy10 me also being a mainer with a 6.5td yeah i went to connell and they did a great job replacing the ds-4 pump on my 95 k2500. My truck has 325,000 and runs great. It averages about 22mpg. Change the fuel filter when it gets cold though cuz it will rob your mileage. Also, i was told to get an anti algae solution for my fuel tank because that can break off and clog the filter, killing the mpg. Good luck, and send me a message if you are ever interested in a 6.5td
mrsnarkle77 4 years ago
What additive do you use?
I only see diesel kleen and stp diesel treatment over the counter.
JohnFromSpace 4 years ago
Got one in my 96 Suburban too. It's had a couple injection pumps. Also had a glow plug relay and a harmonic balancer. Thats it! All in 225,000 miles. Still has original injectors, but theyre needing replaced pretty bad.
torque395 4 years ago
I heard Harmonic Balancers need to be replaced every 100,000 miles. My truck only has 82,000 on it. Does it show anysigns when it needs it?
JohnFromSpace 4 years ago
You need to look for cracks or loose pieces of rubber in the back of the balancer. It will be sloppy too if its getting bad. When it gets really bad it will make alot of noise. At that point you better get it fixed quick. Mine didnt need one until about a year ago. Its got 225k on it now.
torque395 4 years ago
sloppy how?
JohnFromSpace 4 years ago
i'd love to drop one in my range rover would make a great 4wd out of it something landrover never done was fit 8v diesels untill latley
bushytas 4 years ago
nice, i have a 6.5 in my 1996 suburban. it has almost 200,000 miles on it and it is still running strong
CollinKandelen 4 years ago
How reliable has it been for you? Have you relocated the PMD yet?
JohnFromSpace 4 years ago
i thought id take this opportunity to eavesdrop haha... ive got a 1998 silverado k3500 single rear 6.5L with the remote pmd mount. i bought the truck from a guy who claimed to know nothing about the stalling problem i discovered a week later... anyway, if you havent done it yet, it would be wise to relocate the pmd before its too late and the part is damaged. although everyone bashes the 6.5, its a great engine.
fridizzy10 4 years ago
Its on my to do list. I still take my Buick on road trips because I dont trust to take my 6.5 until I address the PMD issue. I heard heath is the way to go and its pricey.
Which kit did you buy?
JohnFromSpace 4 years ago
after i found out about the pmd failure i looked up a couple of truck service shops up here in maine... i found a place called connell diesel, which is just an average diesel shop that specialized in fuel injection products...
fridizzy10 4 years ago
anyway, they recommended a heat-sync through stanadyne (they also had to replace my pmd through stanadyne), as well as their harness kit. i would try finding a place local to you before you order something online. heath diesel has a great reputation, although i have never used any of their products. good luck with your truck!
fridizzy10 4 years ago
diesel engines for chevrolet were built by detroit diesel until the duramax came along in my opinion are nicer then the cummins
searay77 4 years ago
I'm a GM loyal and I chose to get this Truck over a Truck with a Cummins or Pstroke even though its inferior.
The DMax's are nice but the $500 a month payments arent and I'm not ready to live off of just rice yet =P
But being nonbiased it does seem like the Cummins Diesels are the best. I saw the internals compared to a DMax and they were beefier.
I dont tow and my trucks for dog hauling duties so It'll survive =)
JohnFromSpace 4 years ago
thats not a duramax u retard
abercrombie4130 4 years ago
Yeah this is the engine prior to the Duramax.
It's not the best diesel in the world, that title probably belongs to Dodge but I like GM's and Duramax's arent in my budget right now.
JohnFromSpace 4 years ago
nice i love duramaxes
but cummins is my favorite
