Yes, the crosshairs were in bad taste. But there's no comparison to the intense vitriol coming from the right-wing. None. The 5-second barely noticeable crosshairs in this ad would only compare to Palin, Limbaugh, etc. if the voiceover would've said something like, "P.S. He's a baby-killer! Time to reload! Hayworth is going down! Take your country back!"
And certainly, if Mitchell was WELL-KNOWN for shooting things, as Palin is, it very well could've created more of a stir.
These images aren't dangerous to anyone. Insane people will find justification wherever they want to, and an ad will not push a murderer 'over the edge'. It's not even worth discussing such a silly argument from either side. Harry Mitchell, Sarah Palin, Jodie Foster, it's all a silly argument: crazy people are responsible for the own actions, they are not controlled by others.
It is clearly NOT a rifle scope but a telescope hence the words "Focus" as opposed to "don't retreat, reload" Or "Water the tree of liberty with BLOOD!"
A psychotic young man attempts to assassinate a congresswoman he had met years earlier, shoots her in the head, kills and injures a bunch of people...and the public is fixated on a graphic on Sarah Palin's website. How ridiculous and disheartening. Yes, the problem is the graphics - not the 1 in 10 million psychotic killer.
The shooter was a leftist! He didn't even know--no one knew-- or care that Palin used a war metaphor (as everyone in politics does). He didn't take his cues from Palin. He was following Marx! Liberals can be soooooooo stupid.
I think it's unlikely Loughner had a coherent political philosophy... FBI Director Robert S. Mueller makes a good point: “The ubiquitous nature of the Internet means that not only threats but also hate speech and other inciteful speech is much more readily available to individuals than quite clearly it was 8 or 10 or 15 years ago,” Mr. Mueller said. “That absolutely presents a challenge for us, particularly when it results in what would be lone wolves or lone offenders undertaking attacks."
Um... the ad suggests Hayworth is FOCUS of a JUSTICE DEPARTMENT investigation... we can all agree that even five seconds of fading crosshairs are in poor taste... but are you REALLY making the argument that "Hayworth is the focus of a Justice Department investigation," is the same as, "Don't Retreat, Instead - RELOAD!" ????
Would like to share two points regarding this. The article that linked me here said "Sarah Palin? Democrats Forget They Put JD Hayworth in Crosshairs" -- The majority of democrats (and everybody else) were probably largely unaware this happened.
Also, the crosshairs in this video (while this kind of thing *is* exactly the same problem we speak of w/ Palin and etc) aren't on a map on Mitchell's website. I even missed them the first time watching. Easy to do.
@stauken You're kidding right? You actually think that all people in the GOP knew that Palin had used crosshairs?
So it's worse to put crosshairs on a district map than it is to actually put crosshairs ON THE PEOPLE IN A TV AD? I mean, you don't see them as the same level of horrible?
Were you upset when Obama said "If they bring a knife, we'll bring a gun" while in Philly?

I see that you have never used a telescope. They don't HAVE crosshairs.

Oh please thats not crosshairs, thats a submarine telescope.

@Savagevibe
Submarines don't have 'telescopes', they have 'periscopes'...that they use to track their TARGETS.
