The Dr. Light in the animated series obviously created X and Wily created Zero as shown in Megaman Power Fighters II, Megaman X 4, and Tatsunoko vs Capcom. The X series took place in the future as we all know but the animated series itself takes place in the past. The guy who originally created Megaman is Japanese so there might be mispelled english terms.

I believe Dr.Wily created Zero to get rid of Bass, the "strongest" robot then, and Megaman. But Wily got continously angry at Bass being as he is overly self-confident and unable to defeat the Blue Bomber, and slowly built Zero to teach Bass a lesson in pain. I can believe that Wily put Bass and Zero to fight to test Zero's power, and Bass was nearly destroyed, but WIly had to reseal Zero due to the fact he'll destroy everything not related to his original plan. Seems about right.

@KeijiDragon Nope, at those times, he'd became a Maverick due to the Zero Virus, and Megaman by then was in the form of X through Dr. Light's upgrade and was sealed away. Maverick Zero apparently hadn't been able to get to X's capsule to kill him before the virus left him and entered Sigma.

I think the real reason for the end of the Megaman series actually took place in Megaman ll when Wily stole the future Megaman and turned him into Quint. I think Roll's illness in Megaman 10 also has something to do with it.

My take: Wily never got a chance to use Zero in 20XX because he either died or was imprisoned before he had a chance to activate him. Then, in 21XX, Gamma & his unit of the Maverick Hunters came upon Zero and reactivated him, not knowing what could happen. Because his program was not monitored like X's, he became a killing machine, slaughtering Gamma & his unit. Zero has no memories of his past when he was created because his memory core was damaged by Sigma during their first encounter.

Creating all the Robot Masters, who seem sentient to me (Protoman being a good example of a Robot Master having free will and such), in order to serve humans, doing tasks a nonsentient robot could have handled. And then they get scrapped and put into a museum or something for people to gawk at, as seen in MM7. I wonder if Megaman was scrapped as well when X was made. I dunno, seems a little cruel to me.

Well, with a kooky old man that everyone seems to somehow think is capable of murder when he pretty much never has in the classic series (though he's kidnapped once or twice), I think it's safe to speculate that he made Zero for something else. Who knows why he made Zero in the first place?

I know it's non-cannon and everything, but if Zero's ending in Tatsunoko holds any water, he may have not made Zero for any malicious purposes. But that's if it holds any water.

My take is, just like when Zero went into a 100 year repair-hibernation before the Zero series, something happened in the original series which caused Zero to have to hibernate and to forget his original purpose as an absolute killing machine to take down Dr. Light. The original megaman may have had a significant part in this.
