@SvenSiegmund Marklin sold a digital measurement car that you could pull with the loco... it reads out the velocity in scale, amoung other things. Search ebay for 49960.

No, this is the most wonderful thing about this turnout setup on this layout. For the whole time not a single switch has moved. What you see is indeed one round, one single period of the train's track before it gets repeated.
Crazy! I couldn't follow it all and work out which bits the train had gone over and which it hadn't. I found myself trying to colour in the track it had gone over but I just couldn't do it in my mind! How exactly do they work then? :S
