What Subaru/Moto Moderni could have done, was to use the engine not in F1 but instead, WSC! Given the fact that the 3.5 L engines used by the Jaguar XJR15-Cosworth, Mercedes C291, Peugeot 905 & Toyota TS010 were producing in the region of 600+bhp (compared to the much highly tuned 3.5 L 700 bhp F1 engines), a Subaru/Moto Moderni-powered Group C car could have been quite a competitive machine! Shame..
I'm a big Subaru fan and it's a shame this engine never really worked. Not only was it down on power - around 600hp compared to ~850hp of the Hondas, but it was also VERY heavy and not very fuel efficient, which was vital given that there were no fuel stops in 1990. This meant even more weight as more fuel had to be carried.
But as we know Subaru instead went off to WRC and the legendary Impreza was born, so not all bad :)
The layout was good for 1970's designs but not the narrow angle package needed for the body shape of the 1990's era. Also engine was about 20kg overweight to the leading designs of the time. Had at least 50bhp less and higher fuel consumption than the compact V8's and V10's of the time.
If you compare this car to it's rivals in 1990 it didnt stand a chance. Ferrari V12 141kg 690bhp. Renault V10 139kg 680bhp. Honda V10 690bhp. Cosworth HB V8 140kg 660bhp. Judd EV V8 125kg 640bhp
Boxer 12 cylinder was a brilliant idea for auto racing, but not for F-1.(How to arrange the exhaust pipes while keeping the engine's center of gravity low?)
Looking that engine I dream about a seventies design built in the late eighties, how would be possibile for subaru pay for that huge outdated piece of steel?
you worked for the coloni team when they had the subaru engine then the ford engine? this was 90 and 91 seasons going by your age on your channel that would make you 13 or 14 years of age. i find that a little hard to believe pal.
