@christofffrazier "DJ = A disc jockey (also known as DJ or deejay) is a person who selects and plays recorded music for an audience." We are his audience, and he certainly selected some sweet tunes.
rotary mixers were primarily used by the New York house DJs of days gone by (think MAW, Larry Levan, etc...)
Notable models include (but not limited to) Rane MP2016, Urei 1620LE, and my personal favourite, the Allen & Heath Xone V6)
Today a rotary mixer would be considered old school, but make no mistake, the mixers named above are anything but cheap...google a price for the Xone V6 and see for yourself.
Don't forget the Bozak...the Urei is a Bozak copy, if it wasn't for the Bozak..no Urei. Paradise Garage had the Bozak installed before they so called upgraded to the 1620
@windsorunderground Oh My Gosh, no kidding "Windsorunderground", I took your advice and searched it and found out that one of these Xone V6 mixers cost atleast 5,999 dollars. Amazing but what would you recommend the best type of mixer today to use, and not meaning as in the most complicated, but as in the best feeling or what not, ya know what i mean?
A&H offer rotary versions for some of their Xone series mixers. I've thought about the S2 Rotary (google that for a look) and I've seen it for a little over $1000USD. As far as "feel" goes, can't comment since I haven't used one yet. If you want the best of both worlds (i.e. proven quality and rotary for less than a V6), then check out the Xone 92 Rotary. An excellent sounding mixer and built like a tank.
because there is no skill in actually getting the volumes correct and phasing of the songs right? there is plenty more to mixing than beat matching nubcakes, get a life.
Hey I'm looking to buty the same mixer and use it with Ableton. How do you like it overall? and what kind of sound card are you using? I'm having problems finding a good audio interface. Are you using all 6 channels fro Ableton? thx
Here is a list of equipment I've owned over the years Technics SL-1200 (you probably have never seen this) Technics SL-1200 mk2 Denon DN-1000F Denon DN-M2300R Denon DN-2600F Pioneer CDJ-1000 Denon DNS-5000 Denon DNS-3500 Allen & Heath Xone 1D Allen & Heath Xone 2D Akai APC40
1st let me introduce myself. I'm a 40 year old DJ who started DJing in 1984. I've owned several Mark 2s (that's what Djs call them) over the years. I have a vinyl collection that will pretty much make you huge bedroom floor unusable. Did you know that European vinyls are a lot thinner than US vinyls allowing you to pack more into a crate.
@MRDJDC props for keeping the deep house alive - it takes skill to mix it properly (which you clearly have) and the right crowd (some people just want all the same stuff off the beatport top 100 electro chart all night with minimal imagination used). Also props on "Essential Bit of Piano" it's one of my fave trax
Problem is that ableton is not that "Live mix feeling" anymore its very pointy and everything but i prefer virtual DJ or tracktor for live mixing, ableton is more studio for me ^^ Nice mix btw
It's just different. You can actually do a Traktor style set in Live, it just takes some tweaking. Like others have said, it's really just a preference thing. I actually really want to switch to Traktor at some point when i get a pair of Technics. But both are great in different contexts. Live lends better to producers because you can layout a set ahead of time for live triggering.
Heartbeat 'Amma' + Allen & Heath Xone 92 = *drools*
