  • Michael Rosen brought me here.

  • We aleo used to sing the Christmas song "Oh little town of Bethlehem" but it was sung to a tune which was different from the normal one. I will attempt to play it on my electronic organ, record it and post it on Youtube.

  • I remember singing this at 5 yrs old in a school assembly - ah the days.

Thanks for the hymn and the lovely video. Just one comment though the image at the very end of the male with his hand up showing 2 fingers up and 2 down is NOT Jesus! Look at images on google of Baphomet and see what his hands are doing!! No wonder people put 2 fingers up in cursing! Blessings.

  • I'm an atheist but I do love this so very much.

  • A friend told me how confused he was when he heard this at school, because at that time he was unaware of the other meaning of the word "without". "Why should a green hill have a city wall?" he thought puzzledly

  • I remember school in 1965 when we sang hymns like these during school assembly!

  • Beautiful song it reminds me of my grandmother who passed away march 4th,2011 now she is with the Lord. She used to sing it to my mother and my mother sang it to me.

  • i dnt believe in god or nething like that but ill alwas remember this song my gnanda requested it b sug at his funeral bfore he died and thats y itll

  • Blessed be the hands that wrote this hymn and all the other hymns that were written and may the Lord give them a place in his kingdom.

  • The lyrics we sang were different :/

  • The video images presented here are so ironic because if you have been to Jerusalem you'll know how brown and barren is the surrounding landscape - certainly the opposite of what you see in this video. Green hills indeed!

  • This song formed part of my indoctrination at primary school and I've never liked it. It's a dirge. At my primary school it was given new words when sung at assemblies. It reinforces the somewhat ironic fact, given that Christianity is a creed of pacificism and respect for your fellow men, that its symbol is an image of torture.

  • i luv this song

  • Jesus is alive forever. He reigns over all.

One day every knee will bow to Him.

    Jesus alone saves People.

  • @JesusOurSalvation Jesus is my bitch

  • there is a God

  • My favorite hymn.

New York 's Broadway Tabernacle pastor in the 20's ,

Dr. Charles Jefferson , used this in his great book "Things Fundamental" to illustrate salvation to great effect..

  • Thank you for the hymn, which I did not know. Also thank you forr shots of Hawes. I was there two years ago and loved it - loved all of Yorkshire. It was an intensely spiritual experience traveling in the north of England, a trip that culminated in a visit to Fountains Abbey.

  • Cecil Francis Alexander lived in my old school! Strabane Grammar.

  • this brings back my school day memories of the assemblies, children do not sing and pray in our schools now and that is really sad, because this country (uk) is a christian country and I think taking the gospel out of schools has lost some of our hertigage .May God Bless our country and restore it to the christian nation it once was.AMEN

  • very true. it takes me mind to peimary school in ghana, when we used to sing this song at assembly and moral talk. it was great and us u said we pray the word of the lord is restored back in our schools. Amen

  • @tickertyboo43 I remember this from primary school as well, in fact I was first introduced to it at school. My primary school, Castlehill Primary in Bearsden, inflicted religion on kids using methods similar to the indoctrination used in fascist states. The teachers also used it as a way of imposing their own literal minded religious beliefs on children. There should be no religious indoctrination in schools. Teach kids about religion, yes, but give them the freedom to make up their own minds.

  • Excellent !!!

  • pimarry school never forget u r 1955

    russ london keep the faith.

  • Wow! This song took me straight back to infant school, 45 years ago plus... To say it made me cry, would be understating it. I loved this song, and we sung it a lot, but this is beautiful, heart wrenching stuff...

    Pure magic...

  • HAHAHA LOL??? this is funny

  • this was one of the most sacred hymns for the servant of God, Ravenhill... bless his soul we have very rare preachers like him this day... i wondered all along what this song sounds like ever since he mentioned it and it's good to know finally somebody is willing to share hymns. Bless you friend and brother..(or sister)

  • Can you kindly advise who was Ravenhill? I know the Ravenhill area of Belfast. Any connection? Blessings.

  • Beautifull/moving hymn. Has anyone heard/done this hymn sung to the tune of "House of the Rising Sun" (by The Animals)? I heard it a number of times in 60/70's during "Jesus Revolution/Freaks" days and it works really well.
