Depth of field is dependent mainly on the lens you're using, how close the subject is to the camera, and the aperature you set the lens to. It's not dependent on the camera make!!! Camera wise, it depends on if the camera is a full frame camera or not. How large the camera sensor is.
People are choosing Canon are Nikon because it's their favorite brand, not because the video has better depth of field. Obviously, they are too similar to tell a difference. The colors are just slightly different.
@MrKuba105000 this comparison is retarded since depth of field is determined by the lens not the camera. And considering you can mount nikon lenses on canon but not vice versa, canon seems like the better choice for video.
it is very hard to get an audience on youtube especially for new channels.
although everyone is writing 'check out my channel', i think you should do that (i do that aswell) because the videos might be really good although no one is watching them.

7D has a bit more DoF because it has 1.6 crop factor.
D7000 has more shallow DoF because it has 1.5 crop factor .
Full frames has the lowest DoF because they have 1 crop factor :D
I have D7000. Both 7D and D7000 are great cameras. I prefer D7000 over 7D, but handling of this camera is not that much comfortable. I think design of 7D is much better for long time photography.
I like canon, but this video is stupid!? DOF only depends on sensor size (crop factor), focal length, subject distance. not the camera brand. COMPAER THIS: focusing /number of focuspoints, tracking, speed of it (that depends on lens too)/, frame per second noise performance normal/custom settings build quality ergonomic other features (like weather sealing) what software comes with it... many many things to compare but not DOF.
this kind of reviews are pointless... the person can mess with the settings of the camera prior to recording... for example if he likes the canon, he can pump up the saturation and contrast in the camera settings to give it a better punch than the nikon... smae goes the other way here u can see the nikon have less saturation and less contrast... I wonder why... theres no way to be sure which camera is which if u do the exact video side by side with the same lens etc both are great cameras
What a joke. If you want to compare then compare this is as biased as they come. For those that want to hang their hat on a brand then you are lacking in skills my friend. Move on and get to work on your skills. The brand I shoot is irrelevant and would surprise you.
@ruraltexashighway Totally agree, it comes down not to which one is better, but which one is most comfortable in your hands, and which one works best for you. It's irrelevant which brand you shoot. I've taken better shots on a D40 than some "professionals" in my area with D3s or 1Ds or 5Ds. I personally prefer a camera whose buttons are intuitive and easy to navigate. For some people, that's Canon or Pentax. Others, it's Nikon.
WHY THE FUCKKKKKKK DO YOU HAVE TO PUT A GOD DAMN LINK IN THE VIDEO...? DO YOU KNOW MY FUCKING LAPTOP TAKES FOR ABOUT 3 HOURS TO LOAD A SINGLE VIDEO..? FUCKINGGG ASSS
I only got nikon d3100 and my hubby got canon7d, i dont want to say anything bad about nikon or canon.
1. Just try both cameras with long exposure side by side, you will notice the different. One using iso200 f3.5 30sec, the other one have to boost up to iso1000 to get the same result.
2. At night both try to shoot same tree, 50 meter distance. (without road light under full moon).
3. Try to shoot sunrise during golden hour without using any CPL or ND filter.
It not the camera that give great results. It's the Photographer's skills and creativity. I've had other so called photographers take photos or video with my Nikon D7000. Ewww.. You Have to have skills to choose the right settings. The Nikon D7000 has very little limitations. Know your settings and practice make perfect. You'll get breath taking results.
@ElectrofilmsENT that s funny i was under the impression that canon just caught up very very recently when it comes to Autofocus (a lot of pro Photographers think so) , and Definitely same thing about high iso, even tho the 5d MkII is a beast, D700 ( therefore D3, D3s) still gets the gold for high iso, don t even get me started about Built quality and sturdiness.. i think everyone ( including canon users know what i m talkin about , no?)
@jouwell I've seen multiple high ISO tests and I still believe the 5D wins over the majority of cameras. They seem to hold a lot more color information in the pixels. And a lot of "pro" photographers use Manual focus ;)
@ElectrofilmsENT I think wether u get Canon or Nikon is all a matter of taste in the end of the day, i own a D700 but if i could i would also buy a 5D MkII because i m under the impression that Nikon is behind when it comes to video and i would love to be able to play around doing short movies as well as keep doing photography etc
@ElectrofilmsENT Behind. All of the top DSLRs on DXOMark are Nikons. The D3X, D3s, D700 are all rated for better sensor performance. A have a 5D Mk II that is great, but I'm not such a fanboy to think that Nikon is behind anyone. They know how to build cameras, as we see with the D4.
This video test is useless because both cameras are superior but Nikon D7000 have standard natural color the canon have little more vivid colors not sharper or better if you can edit in Sony vegas or Camera self you get the same results!
i don't get this Nikon vs Canon bs. At the end of the day, unless someone tells you what they shot a photo with, can you really tell if it was shot with a Canon or a Nikon? A good photo is a good photo and a bad photo is a bad photo regardless if it was shot with a Canon or a Nikon.
Instead of comparing machines should compare Photografia! Photos can be made mobile, with more emphasis than a DSLR. No use having good machines, but good vision.
You can't compare what the picture is taken with, only by who takes it. Learn a bit more about lenses and put a like/dislike bar so people can know to watch this waste of time or not. Thanks.
NIKON 7000 is best ! look the colors in the nikon is much better than canon 7d,on the canon 7d have one warm color and this makes the image is not real! !
compare the images in a iMac 27 ¨ 2GB video card, 3.4GHz i7 processor etc! Nikon is growing every day!
@WhiteBeltAcademy Well, for starters I am NOT a photographer, much less I have a camera!.'ll Buy one within a few months and i will buy the NIKON since they have more years in the world of photography and I love the company! (in microscope there is nothing better than Nikon, I have many acquaintances doctors) and that is very commercial canon is like commercial WINDOWS ... and nikon is not comercial.nikon is like ¨apple¨! Many people like that say WINDOWS is much better but Windows sucks.
@xN1TSUG4 English isn't your first language is it? For starters, Windows doesn't suck and neither does canon. Your opinion is worthless being that you have no experience with either of these cameras, or cameras in general. And nothing you said makes sense either. I own a D7000 btw.
Canon seem to be better than nikon in any video test I've seen, ( that isn't fixed), but I love nikon photo quality, in some cameras, I've seen the D3100 and 600D( which I own), and I loved my canon 100% better in both video and photography.
Because I used the two to make one specific documentation, and after a bit, I just stopped using the nikon all in all because it wasn't doing a good job in recording, and the nature shots, (sucked) even with expensive lenses on it.
the camera can be responsible for DOF, because it is to do with the sensor. i.e. full frame will have shallow DOF as opposed to, say a 1.6x APS-C crop. having said that, yes, it's mostly in the optics, and this comparison isn't very helpful.
Since when the Depth of field begin to depend on the camera? If the sensor sizes were significantly different then it would make sense. Otherwise it is plainly misleading. Clearly such videos are targeted at absolute beginners who are out to buy a DSLR without knowing ABCs of DSLRs.
Many people say the 7D has nice color compared D7k... but for most professional the D7k is better... and I also agree that the D7k is better than 7D (except in video mode). So here is some video that make you understand why I choose D7k for still images. - /watch?v=Bx_7D_vvULI
@willieturnip Bad idea. You're just losing color information, you're not gaining any sort of "flatter" image by reducing saturation in camera. Contrast yes though.
@Schubii90 That i agree... But that's about it, I'd still choose the D7000 any day since it's more neutral and provides more detail for post production...
In my opinion overall The 7D(keep in mind I have a D7000) is a better camera, not by much, but it is a little better however for the price difference among other things your better off with the D7000 ♥
This is dumb, the only way to compare DOF is by comparing lenses, not cameras. Also, the colors on a Nikon are comparable if not better then Canon, you're not adjusting settings to make them comparative at all!
@Srabbel Actually, the larger the sensor the better the DOF. That's a fact. However, the lens capability does play into it as well. Aperture settings affect the focal plane that affect the Depth of Field. To your point though, the sensor does affect the DOF in the same way a large format camera has a greater DOF than a 35mm.
@Srabbel --------Im not a photographer......but I always heard from photographers the lens play the bigger role in good fotos. Beginnning I lways thought is the camera play the bigger role in good fotos. Thanks i feel more confident now.
@laterskater147 well... what is better color? i think nikon cameras produce much better images due to their color. i dont want a camera to create cinematic photographies, i want realistic colors. post processing is much easier with a "flat" image
@laterskater147 You're right and you're wrong. If we're talking about still images here, if you were to shoot in JPEG, the camera would be responsible because the processor takes the image data and processes it, applies white balance, sharpening, demosaicing, etc etc. If you shoot in RAW, then your post processing is responsible for the colour. The sensor itself only reports a brightness value (in other words the camera's sensor can only detect black and white).
Not sure what are the lens used in both Canon and Nikon cameras. Lenses does play a part in sharpness, bokeh and colours. If you use a Nikon pro lens, the results will be very much better with constrast, sharpness, colours etc. Anyway, D7000 a different class from 7D. D7000 is very much cheaper than 7D and much more value for money given the features provided.
@deejay1214 In this test yes, but this test is biased, and the Canon clearly shot on different settings entirely, so this footage proves nothing at all.
the only difference are the colour settings. Cannon videos have boosted colours. How can you even compare the cameras for the dpth of field. It does not make any sense. You can compare the lenses but not the cameras.
I do NOT like Canon Lenses or Pro-DSLRs. But from this Photographic Digital Display the Canon 7D shows,Sharper and more Vivid colour, Greater Depth of Field and Colour Accuracies!!!! I like by Beautiful SUPREME Asahi ZEISS PENTAX K-5(K5) which with its ED-DA Hologram Lenses and PRIME ENGINE 2 beats All Canons and Nikon D7000s or Canon 7D. I have better Noise and Highier Colour Accuracies on my Asahi PENTAX K-5(K5) & I have FULL True HD 1920x1080p Video/Stereo Wide Variable Stereo Zoom Controls!!
HI Fenchel & Janisch, I'm your subscriber for quite a time now, I like your channel a lot. Can you please upload video using Sony nex and alpha camera? (nex 5n, nex7, A65, A77). Many thanks..
amazing videos :) now i'm in confusion.. well actually unaware.. video capture in canon 7d is amazing.. gud color capture.. but coming to photos, would it be capturing photos like high end dslr cam .. i'm worried act night shots.. capturing light and focus with color with minimum noise... for night time photography.. would it be gud to go with that also ??? plz share ur knowledge..
You should be looking for dynamic range and quality, obviously this was uploaded in "raw", no post process, if don't there will be no point. The Nikon seems to have better dynamic range.. look at the shadows...
no doubt , it is obvious that the nikon's picture control wasn't adjusted properly !
my d3100 can match the canon !
canon has better video, but I shoot stills, that is why even if my d7000 had no video at all, i would still buy it. For $300 off the price of course ;-)
@ivaylommm Nikon D1000 is better for video because it has a full 20 minutes of shooting or a 4GB file size limit unlike most dSLRs. Then again if you want to shoot video with dSLR large sensor size buy a VG10 (or the upcoming VG20) or the awesome Panasonic AG-AF102. At least then you have the ergonomics of a video camera and the flexibility of different lenses.
While this video does not fairly compare the two cameras, and hardly provides conclusive proof one is better than the other, it DOES indisputably illustrate the fact that the Nikon D7000 is the #1 choice for douche-bags who cannot discern between fact and opinion, and subsequently feel the need to cram their subjective views down other people's throats, as if they were sacrosanct universal constants.
They are BOTH excellent cameras with their own strengths and weaknesses. Get a life.
This isnt depth of field. This is contrast, and saturation. Besides, anyone who claims that either camera (all around) is better is nothing more than a fanboy.
I can tell you right now the Nikon is better. Its the sat and contrast that you guys are looking at... The nikon has better image quality.. trust me. imo.
its not the brand, its the shooter.even if you had the most very expensive camera in the world but you don't know how to use it ,same thing its USELESS.i've a lot of co-workers and friends using those high ends DSLR but their pictures sucks.
I'm a Photograher.... a NIKON user as well. CANON is better for videos....and NIKON is better for stills. The fact is, the LENSES makes all the difference too.
@source1asia some sort of correction; Nikon & Canon are equals in stills, however Canon has more advanced video mode settings than Nikon, don't worry that's not a feature, also despite Nikon's continuous AF in video mode because it gets almost the same AF auto exposure changing on Canon when you do auto focus by half-pressing the shutter button.
@AldossariEOS well, you have a point there.... but as far as what I have compared from my D7000 to my NEW Canon 60D (which I bought and used it for my videography), The Canon is more detailed, despite the lens that I use on a 50mm and 24-70mm. Its shows a very sharp, clear quality videos. Nevertheless, my Nikon D7000 was still my best choice in my Photography.
Nikon makes awesome cameras it's basically what the buyer wants. To each his/her own. For me if I could afford it I'd go for the D7 cuz it feels better in my hand and seems lighter than the D7000 and I like where all the buttons are. But you now what I checked out the D7000 too! and for it's price and features you can do a lot more creativity with it for about 2 to 300$ less with a kit or 500$ less body only.
Okay, let's just settle this. Yes, the Canon is more saturated and contrasted by standard settings. Most filmmakers who use DSLR's ALWAYS turn both of these off, or at least lower them a bunch. There's even a setting called Technicolor that removes nearly all of the preset settings for color and saturation, this creates a 'flat' image. Why? This way it's easier to color correct in post production. And yes, you can change the settings on the Nikon so it's more saturated and that makes them equal.
really!?? i don't see Much difference.. but.. i think that have a little change in the contrast.. but this is amended in Photoshop.. And.. I Prefer the Cannon 7D :D because i like the look.. xD
The lens makes shallow depth of field babycakes. 7D crushes the D7000 no comparison

In my opinion overall The 7D(keep in mind I have a D7000) is a better camera, not by much, but it is a little better however for the price difference among other things your better off with the D7000 ♥
deejay1214 4 months ago
This is dumb, the only way to compare DOF is by comparing lenses, not cameras. Also, the colors on a Nikon are comparable if not better then Canon, you're not adjusting settings to make them comparative at all!
MadnessMethodical 4 months ago
@MadnessMethodical Exactly! -.-

canonnnn
bachatango1 4 months ago
DOF is the lens ya goof . And its clear to see the contrast bumped up on the 7D footage is the same .
MrDigital9 4 months ago
a camera is NOOOOOOOOOOOT (except sensor format) responsible for depth of field!!! its the lens... when will people learn?!?!
Srabbel 4 months ago 5
@Srabbel
Haha you are right, when i first saw this vid i was like wtf :DD
tikkukko 4 months ago
@Srabbel Actually, the larger the sensor the better the DOF. That's a fact. However, the lens capability does play into it as well. Aperture settings affect the focal plane that affect the Depth of Field. To your point though, the sensor does affect the DOF in the same way a large format camera has a greater DOF than a 35mm.
GreasyPragma 3 months ago
@GreasyPragma thats also a way to explain that ;)
Srabbel 3 months ago
@Srabbel --------Im not a photographer......but I always heard from photographers the lens play the bigger role in good fotos. Beginnning I lways thought is the camera play the bigger role in good fotos. Thanks i feel more confident now.

@Srabbel Exactly! Geez. Dumb comparison.

@Srabbel agreee.... it's the lens...
dedygraphs 2 months ago
@Srabbel I agree.
The title should have been "Nikon D7000 vs. Canon 7D: Best colors?"...
Which also (partly) depends on the lens...
IdaNikolinePhoto 2 months ago
@Srabbel that is correct...Thanks for enlightening ppl...
MrF1KR3T 2 months ago
@Srabbel i know right !!!?!!!
Baalx3 2 months ago
@Srabbel but the camera is responsible for better colors...
laterskater147 2 months ago
@laterskater147 well... what is better color? i think nikon cameras produce much better images due to their color. i dont want a camera to create cinematic photographies, i want realistic colors. post processing is much easier with a "flat" image
Srabbel 2 months ago
@laterskater147 You're right and you're wrong. If we're talking about still images here, if you were to shoot in JPEG, the camera would be responsible because the processor takes the image data and processes it, applies white balance, sharpening, demosaicing, etc etc. If you shoot in RAW, then your post processing is responsible for the colour. The sensor itself only reports a brightness value (in other words the camera's sensor can only detect black and white).
blakemcguire 2 months ago
@Srabbel Not unless one of the sensors is is larger, which I don't think one is over the other.
ElectrofilmsENT 2 months ago
@ElectrofilmsENT both APS-C. 1.5 vs 1.6 crop factor. Difference is nil.
blakemcguire 2 months ago
@blakemcguire Right I was just explaining that the cameras themselves (both being crop-sensors) have no real effect on the test- just the lenses.
ElectrofilmsENT 2 months ago
this is why i hate 7d the colors
jibskull 4 months ago
Not sure what are the lens used in both Canon and Nikon cameras. Lenses does play a part in sharpness, bokeh and colours. If you use a Nikon pro lens, the results will be very much better with constrast, sharpness, colours etc. Anyway, D7000 a different class from 7D. D7000 is very much cheaper than 7D and much more value for money given the features provided.
EmperorFives 4 months ago 2
as always, not much difference(if any at all)
JC040696 4 months ago
Cannon has better colors, but I still love my D7000♥
deejay1214 4 months ago 2
@deejay1214 In this test yes, but this test is biased, and the Canon clearly shot on different settings entirely, so this footage proves nothing at all.
MadnessMethodical 4 months ago
the only difference are the colour settings. Cannon videos have boosted colours. How can you even compare the cameras for the dpth of field. It does not make any sense. You can compare the lenses but not the cameras.
chmurarz 4 months ago
The 7d is a much more advanced and expensive model. This is kind of unfair :/
ITSbigwillystyle 5 months ago

It's good that Fenchel & Janisch make a lot of good/great videos on youtube here, why there's so many people dislike them?

amazing videos :) now i'm in confusion.. well actually unaware.. video capture in canon 7d is amazing.. gud color capture.. but coming to photos, would it be capturing photos like high end dslr cam .. i'm worried act night shots.. capturing light and focus with color with minimum noise... for night time photography.. would it be gud to go with that also ??? plz share ur knowledge..

@lafotovida u know u can always edit the colors. So it doesn't really matter. but if I would have to choose I would choose the Canon as well.

The only thing I really see is the Canon has better colors. You can always adjust colors though. The Nikon is a lot better though.
LaverlyLove 5 months ago
You should be looking for dynamic range and quality, obviously this was uploaded in "raw", no post process, if don't there will be no point. The Nikon seems to have better dynamic range.. look at the shadows...

no doubt , it is obvious that the nikon's picture control wasn't adjusted properly !
my d3100 can match the canon !
canon has better video, but I shoot stills, that is why even if my d7000 had no video at all, i would still buy it. For $300 off the price of course ;-)
ivaylommm 5 months ago
@ivaylommm Nikon D1000 is better for video because it has a full 20 minutes of shooting or a 4GB file size limit unlike most dSLRs. Then again if you want to shoot video with dSLR large sensor size buy a VG10 (or the upcoming VG20) or the awesome Panasonic AG-AF102. At least then you have the ergonomics of a video camera and the flexibility of different lenses.
rdoetjes 5 months ago
While this video does not fairly compare the two cameras, and hardly provides conclusive proof one is better than the other, it DOES indisputably illustrate the fact that the Nikon D7000 is the #1 choice for douche-bags who cannot discern between fact and opinion, and subsequently feel the need to cram their subjective views down other people's throats, as if they were sacrosanct universal constants.
They are BOTH excellent cameras with their own strengths and weaknesses. Get a life.

i've seen many D7000 and 7D comparison vids but how come the nikon D7000's image looks like shit here? nikon D7000 is better >__<

I'm a Photograher.... a NIKON user as well. CANON is better for videos....and NIKON is better for stills. The fact is, the LENSES makes all the difference too.
source1asia 6 months ago
@source1asia some sort of correction; Nikon & Canon are equals in stills, however Canon has more advanced video mode settings than Nikon, don't worry that's not a feature, also despite Nikon's continuous AF in video mode because it gets almost the same AF auto exposure changing on Canon when you do auto focus by half-pressing the shutter button.
AldossariEOS 6 months ago
@AldossariEOS well, you have a point there.... but as far as what I have compared from my D7000 to my NEW Canon 60D (which I bought and used it for my videography), The Canon is more detailed, despite the lens that I use on a 50mm and 24-70mm. Its shows a very sharp, clear quality videos. Nevertheless, my Nikon D7000 was still my best choice in my Photography.

No it is not. Sensor size and aperture AND distance to subject are all factors in deciding what DOF to use.

Musemaniac91 7 months ago 2
Nikon makes awesome cameras it's basically what the buyer wants. To each his/her own. For me if I could afford it I'd go for the D7 cuz it feels better in my hand and seems lighter than the D7000 and I like where all the buttons are. But you now what I checked out the D7000 too! and for it's price and features you can do a lot more creativity with it for about 2 to 300$ less with a kit or 500$ less body only.

24fps, and 30fps, both in 1080p? The manual audio mic control are general settings, and does not control Left Right audio levels, right?
Jakethemase 7 months ago
Okay, let's just settle this. Yes, the Canon is more saturated and contrasted by standard settings. Most filmmakers who use DSLR's ALWAYS turn both of these off, or at least lower them a bunch. There's even a setting called Technicolor that removes nearly all of the preset settings for color and saturation, this creates a 'flat' image. Why? This way it's easier to color correct in post production. And yes, you can change the settings on the Nikon so it's more saturated and that makes them equal.
icecubemovies 7 months ago
7D footage is more saturated.. Comparation is shit
