I'm an African drummer and they did good. the drummers and dancer experessed the artform well. to most of us it does'nt matter what your ethnicity is as long as you respect the artform and culture enough to present it to the best of your ability according our tradition which has been preserved over thousands of generations.
I'm not African, and I don't think it matters. I like this video because I've tried valiantly t African dance and it is much harder than it looks. It's really hard to let go
and just RESPECT the dance. And I think that's what she's done here. So, kudos!
she has respect for that country and it's culture. and more power to her to learn the dancing. most african-americans i know don't even know how to do their 'ancestors' dances. do they even try?? how about learn the language? i can officially say i respect this woman on several levels. 頑張って!!
In the beginning, it looked like she was trying...but then toward the end it looked like a hot, twirling mess. I am Af Am, and I don't know proper technique for many of the dances. So true enough, perhaps I would have such poor form as this as well. But I'm not going on stage to look like a manic, dancing idiot--BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW THE MOVES.
The guys were doing a great job playing. Then she just crapped it all up with her impression of a sweaty, Japanese ragdoll.
Totsin, you should feel proud that she is glorifying the West-African dance, instead of complaining and all.According to you she is moving around AIMLESSLY,but no,dear SHE IS absolutely making the right moves,I think it is because she is a bit skinnier or less powerful than the West-African beautiful women. Please, encourage others who love your cultures, instead of complaining.I learn chinese and I MAKE ridiculous mistakes and NON of my chinese collegues complain, they encourage me.
I'm Black and she's great. I think she is amazing. Bboys came out of African American culture and let me tell you the best Bgirls in the world are Japanese while the Bboys are comparably still of African descent but has stiff competition from Korean Bboys. Everyone knows the origins of these dances and or music but no one has a monopoly on being good at it. Culture is inspirational and I'm happy to see others take an interest in my culture so much.
as an african american who has taken tons of african dance classes for many years, i enjoy the dance better when i add my own emotion, feeling and movement to the basic move and rythm. i also enjoy watching others do the dance more when they add there own little something to the basic move. your soul envokes your body to move to the rythm of the drum. this girl is jammin. i would like to see her dance in my class.
@h0neybunn you can be sure she practices this atleast 2-3 times a week and has probably watching this on video a hundred times and also possibly been to Africa...when Japanese people do something they tend to be fanatical
Its ok if she does it different. That's what makes it unique. People try things and add their own flare. As long as they Give created where the roots are, I think it is fine.
This is definitely BOMBA, a Puerto Rican style of dance that was preserved from West African culture. I recognize this. If you want to learn more about Bomba, just search it on Youtube. You'll see what I mean.
I loved this though! I'm sending this link to my Nigerian friend who is going to perform Bomba in the spring...these will give her some tips! haha
Nice stuff! When I was there, I found the Japanese to be generally culturally open-minded, and I saw a few other Japanese buskers playing Djembe and Tama on the streets. But then again, other Asian countries are just as open minded. When I was in the Philippines, West African Djembe circles were quite popular too (Biracial Ghanaian Filipino speakin) ^_^
Of all the Asians the Japanese appear to really embrace black and African culture more than other Asians. I thought the drumming and the women were good.
Mixing culture is good, i guess. Respecting the originals, and make things better with different opinions from different peoples from the different cultural back ground. For example, food,,,we like delicious food. If delicious, we eat, no matter where its from.
I think they were pretty good. Heck better than some of the hippie african wanabe drumcircles I've been to. I noticed that in true african drumming, it sounds a little bit looser. With some room for improvising. And definately more varied and loud "hits" or "pops". Please someone correct me if I am wrong.
It doesn't matter how she looks, just as long as she had fun. I mean i'm african-american(mostly don't know what else) and i would suck at danceing even a fraction of what she's doing.
i think the effort was pretty good. people think its easy to learn the various dances and listen to the changes in the drum that lead the dance. its very hard and takes years to perfect. they should keep practicing. at this rate they will improve and if they r humble they could be among the top dances
Perhaps inspite of the rude insults of a few viewers here, The Japanese Girl is moving to the music to the rythm she feels in her soul. If everybody danced the exact same way it would become so boring. ((( Nice Video }}}
I keep coming back to watch this. I am envious of the skill of the lead drummer and the group as a whole.
As far a the Juxtaposition of the cultures go, what I find hilarious (but not bad) is what the drummers are wearing: BOW TIES!!! Maybe not technically bow ties but still funny. I think it is cool.
As far as the dancing goes, whenever I see this or some of the Japanese RnB videos on here I think of my 4th generation Japanese-Canadian ex-girlfriend explaining to me why she didn't dance by asking "have you ever seen and Asian dance?" I don't know what she was thinking.
I keep laughing when I see things like this. I find it absolutely hilarious. They all look so African when they're doing it, and her Japanese features are a powerful counterpoint to this 'Africanness'. This makes for some giggling in idle times for me. Kudos to the drummer, and (whats the word? Props) Props? to the dancer herself.
Bad thing? No, dear God no. I love it. Its giggle worthy. How can I think its bad? That'd be hypocritical. I was just commenting on the interesting picture that this juxtaposition posits. And the drummers are way cool!
Yes, I must agree. Juxtaposition is the winning key word. I've been exposed to the marriage of many cultures, but it's still managed to blow me away, initially.
I must say, that drummer on the right is extremely good. I wonder how and why they got together to do this? Oh, and is this video filmed in Japan or elsewhere.
Nice job.
