Yeah, when I first saw it I thought it looked pretty useless, but you can turn a lot of the eye candy like cubes and wobbly windows off and still have a lot of useful features, like translucency, grouping/tabbing, and being able to see all your desktops/windows at once. Plus most of the work is done by the otherwise idle GPU, so unless you have a really weak video card or play a lot of games, there's hardly a difference.
It's not Bill Gates who's the problem, or capitalism... it's the people who buy Microsoft's products. It's not Bill Gates fault that people like his products enough (relative to the alternatives) to pay dearly for them.
That said, I hate windows... and I'm definitely setting my computer up dual boot Ubuntu/Vista during my semester break. Ubuntu > Vista.

Really the next generation desktop interface, it's far better even than Sun 3D environment (Windows Aero obviously appear very poor in front of that).
You could imagine the applications of such a revolutionary and dynamic interface using the multi-touch technology.

Maybe you were thinking of "Sandstorm", which is more widely known and also completely different.
