I agree that this does sound a lot like the Carpenters. There were many years in the early 70s when the Carpenters and the Jackson Five battled for supremacy at the Grammys. And alas, many of those years the Carpenters reigned supreme. Maybe Michael was thinking if you can't beat them join them. This is one of my all time favorite songs.

This is one of my favourite Michael Jackson Songs, there is an example of him doing this live in Mexico in 1975 here on youtube which is Brilliant and Showmanlike for how I think we would all like to remember him!

Despite his checkered and somewhat questionable past, he was a Truly Great Talent and performed this type of Ballard so well, yes it sounds a little like something the Carpenters may have done, but it was actually Michael Jacksons song covered by some later in performances.
