I just started playing a few days ago so discovering these videos early on will help me build very good habits to hopefully get to high tier of play. I cannot understand how this guy Newtype can be in Gold. I'm in Silver and I think he is making really stupid mistakes. Not constantly building probes in the beginning, is one thing, even in Bronze I was always doing this. He gets supply blocked way too much. It happens to even the best, but the fact that he has 1900/500 in resources when going for Phoenix is NOT alright. When I do that in SILVER it feels as if I have too little resources. His macro, as Sean doesn't really say, sucks.

Can someone please explain to me what this thing with hotkeying units is? Why would you hotkey different units to different keys instead of just all your units to one. Also, does that mean I have to rehotkey them every time I get a new unit. Finally, how do I clear a Hotkey because that really needs to be done : P
@Phobzi Different units need to be micro'd differently. some you can bunch together but for example if you have Banelings and you attack move with a bunch of lings then whenever they come across an enemy unit they'll just explode and be wasted.

Plus people in Bronze or Silver, or "noobs" in Starcraft 2, are doing all those fancy things that I read on Forums and someone even tried a MLG build. So I am not sure if these tips "just Pylons and Probes" can still hold up today.
@megacoolerman just try playing the way that Day9 explained it in this video, even to the part where you repeat to yourself "build more probes, build more pylons". then you will see how much you are NOT producing when actually you should be. and use the keyboard, forget about the mouse. it was the my first big mistake not to take keyboard shortcuts seriously.
@megacoolerman The thing about all those MLG builds and all is that they all rely on timing and that timing is going to be off if you don't have your mechanics right.
In short, you can't do those (at least not proberly) unless you can do what Day[9] explains in this video.

it refers to macromanagement as opposed to micromanagement - you basicly try to manage you economy and production as good as you can when macroing while microing focusses on the little details at key moments (e.g. stalker or high templar placement during a battle)
So when playing as protoss you should make pylons and probes. But what should you get out for an offensive force? Lots of Zealots? Stalkers? Immortals?
I know you should have a LOT more than the guy in the first game. But how much should you have? Because you obviously have to focus on it rather than the pylons and probes for a bit right?
@HadesWTF Think of it this way, workers are OP, the most OP unit in starcraft is workers and they should allways get prioritised. You can start up a game against an easy comp and just sit with one nexus and build workers and pylons/suply depots constantly, just too get that part down at first, then go in to an other game and start adding other structures, will help your macro alot :)

Another thing. In the example d9 showed us. You don't need that 2nd gas.. srsly, you can save 3 probes and 75 minerals and just make more zealots and stalkers. Sentries are cool, but their damage is terrible. with that 1 gas you can like go into a nice zealot/stalker mix with a few sentries and have money for expanding.. It's shown in daily #175- adel's no gas. I think it works well with noobs too, because you have 1 less thing to worry about-- having way too much gas and not enough minerals.

@lolsa123 In that case just cue the base with 40 to a different bases mineral patch causing the newly built probes to go to an expo when built, also the max number of probes needed at a single base is 30 so transfer 10 probes to an expo,

I have to ask, he was talking about hotkeys, would it be a good idea to hotkey forge/Engeneer bay/Armory/other research structures to hotkeys? and how do I know which units to hotkey where?
@ZKoftherebellion yes you should! As Terran I like CC: 4 Rax: 5 Factory/Starport: 6 Engineering Bay/Armory/Ghost Academy: 7. I'll hot key several SCVs for building at 3. Main Army: 1 and 2 is free for harassing units. i just started but this has been working well.
@ZKoftherebellion Whatever you feel comfortable with, and yes it's a good idea to hotkey research structures. I go with 1-3 units 4 = CCs 5-7 production facilities 8-0 misc. If you have an army like vikings/marines/tanks put them all on different hotkeys because air units (medivacs are an exception) need to be microed differently than your ground army, marines/muraders need to use stim, and tanks need to be able to go in siege mode.
Im not kiddin when he started the replay and started talking about the probes and other stuff..... i seriously thought he was on crack, just yellin out stuff.... but then i realized what he was talking about. this is very great
also, in addition to the unit/building hotkeys, new players can have command hotkeys show up in the command card thing on top of the command buttons: menu > I think its gameplay > something along the lines of "show hotkeys on command buttons"
MR. day 9? at what point do we want to stop producing workers due to the fact that the more workers we have limits the number of combat units available, is there a cap?

I have the problem when playing Zerg that I start having about 5000 Minerals, but only 200 Gas most of the time cause of mutas, hydras and so forth. And then I Can never spend those minerals and feel like I am doing a horrible job. So I just throw in ranom Speedlings.
@CaptainBakaSama I'm only in Gold so take my advice with a little caution as I'm not good but, as zerg I throw down more hatcheries and spore/spine crawlers to keep my minerals lowish and just pump out speedlings out of the hatcheries. Be aggressive with them so you can keep making more. Target expansions, stray units eg.
@CaptainBakaSama I start to have the same problem lategame... What I've realized is that after I get my first 2-3 gysers, I stop.... And then I never have enough gas. Lategame a Zerg should be on 3-5 bases, the key is making sure you're harvesting every gyser... Which I still do not do.

@lolsa123 In that case just cue the base with 40 to a different bases mineral patch causing the newly built probes to go to an expo when built, also the max number of probes needed at a single base is 30 so transfer 10 probes to an expo,

Dude, thanks so much for these videos. I recently started playing SC2, and tonight I shot up to Platinum League 2v2--all thanks to you. Previously, I played in pretty much all Bronze Leagues. I still suck, but this single video improved my gameplay so much. Thanks again!

I have to ask, he was talking about hotkeys, would it be a good idea to hotkey forge/Engeneer bay/Armory/other research structures to hotkeys? and how do I know which units to hotkey where?

@ZKoftherebellion yes you should! As Terran I like CC: 4 Rax: 5 Factory/Starport: 6 Engineering Bay/Armory/Ghost Academy: 7. I'll hot key several SCVs for building at 3. Main Army: 1 and 2 is free for harassing units. i just started but this has been working well.

@ZKoftherebellion Whatever you feel comfortable with, and yes it's a good idea to hotkey research structures. I go with 1-3 units 4 = CCs 5-7 production facilities 8-0 misc. If you have an army like vikings/marines/tanks put them all on different hotkeys because air units (medivacs are an exception) need to be microed differently than your ground army, marines/muraders need to use stim, and tanks need to be able to go in siege mode.

also, in addition to the unit/building hotkeys, new players can have command hotkeys show up in the command card thing on top of the command buttons: menu > I think its gameplay > something along the lines of "show hotkeys on command buttons"

I have the problem when playing Zerg that I start having about 5000 Minerals, but only 200 Gas most of the time cause of mutas, hydras and so forth. And then I Can never spend those minerals and feel like I am doing a horrible job. So I just throw in ranom Speedlings.

@CaptainBakaSama I'm only in Gold so take my advice with a little caution as I'm not good but, as zerg I throw down more hatcheries and spore/spine crawlers to keep my minerals lowish and just pump out speedlings out of the hatcheries. Be aggressive with them so you can keep making more. Target expansions, stray units eg.

@CaptainBakaSama I start to have the same problem lategame... What I've realized is that after I get my first 2-3 gysers, I stop.... And then I never have enough gas. Lategame a Zerg should be on 3-5 bases, the key is making sure you're harvesting every gyser... Which I still do not do.
