The heaviness of the LR compresses the mud to harden it under the tire to help with traction. With proper tires an LR can do so much and more than your 89 sideslap. Dont forget LR3/4 got the highest safety ratings for rollovers. And the sidekick... should be changed to sidetip. When i go off road i never see sides#!ts, those are used for student drivers...lol

my parents had a disco 2, we did anything with it, we did not have to change breaks 4 3 yrs, and wen we did, it was only becuz we had the wheel off 4 sumthin and just felt like it, and did not have to. land rovers r good vehicles, for me, i want one a discovery series 2, 3, or 4, or a chevy tahoe, either way, LAND ROVERS are the best (along side GM in my opinion)

The new 3.0L TDI is a massive improvement on the 2.7 that lacked the get up and go in certain situations and the new motor would have to be the best part ofl in this car, then the gear box. Coming from a teen driver. The sport mode is the best!! Its the beanies switch for overtaking and for fanging up windy roads! Its not stupid, it holds gears when you need engine breaking and pops down gears aiding in breaking, making life so sweet and turning it into a beast!

I really love land rover and the lr4 is a beautiful model and wins hands down in many aspects but land rover gained a bad reliability ratings in past years. It's a luxury car and very capable but I don't think Lexus GX 460 is less capable than LR4

and If one cares less about style and needs unbreakable SUV he/she will buy Lexus not LR4.

The discovery is simply not up to the job, it is now too heavy and like its big fat brither the RR is suited only to highways and shopping malls. You would be better going for a RAV4 or hyundai which are cheaper,more reliable and better suited to off roading ;-)

That is why there are only small minor changes every year. I have a Land Rover Discovery 2003. I just went off-roading and hit really deep water/mud/dirt...the works. Does anyone know if you need to service your car after something like that? Like there doesn't seem to be any damage or anything like that but should i bring it to an auto shop to change the fluids or anything?

@resolvingissues101 diffs on a disco 3 are supposed to be sealed, just remember to wash the chassis of your car everytime you do serious offroading, I have an 08 Defender which goes offroad everyday and I keep my chassis clean to avoid dry mud messing wires, sensors (Defender has barely any) brakes. so, how did it go that day, did you get the job done?

Listen, The LR 4 is a class apart form other 4x4, simply becuase the thing works on and off road! If you had have a brain, you would know that the LR4 is so sophisticated compared to other 4x4 models, the engine bay is water tight, it has in effect two axles, it can monitor driving styles and adjust the engine/gearbox to suit etc. this is not 4x4 for Bling! it is a serious vehicle, one that would get you out of trouble not put you in it!!!

I own an LR3 and a Range Rover Sport now and have had several Disco 1 and 2s. They are all worthy! I am planning on an LR4 in the near future. As far as Toyota? Give me a break... Apples and oranges.

Sure there are plenty of capable 4x4s out there - Jeeps, Toyotas and the like... All great in each aspect. But those are just SUVs... This is a Land Rover.

@rodaniell I own a vehicle that is as good or better off road than Land Rovers, gets double the gas mileage (or better), is quite cheap to own and run, and that you left unmentioned. It is a 1989 Suzuki Sikdekick. Granted, it is not as nice, but who cares? It is cheap, reliable transportation that can go ANYWHERE AND EVERYWHERE you want it to. It's extremely light weight helps it not get bogged down and they pull Land Rovers out of mud holes all the time. Check them out. :)
