Canada is the training ground for inexperienced foreign doctors who stay just long enough to get certified and then leave. The waiting lists are a joke for things like knee surgeries, hip and joint replacements. You practically have to be dying to be seen at some emergency rooms. You might get a bed in a hallway too ....

As for Medicare/Social Security, I wish I didn't have to pay for it, because I know I'll never be able to use the benefits and I also know that I will never get back what I paid into it. That's not fair to me. It's my money, not the government's. If I had access to it, I would ensure that it at least maintained its value rather than lost it. Then it truly would be a benefit for me when I get old and retire. Now, because of government waste, I will likely not be able to retire.

As for the roads and highways: make them private. A private company would do a much better job keeping roads in good shape and making sure that no one used them improperly. Furthermore those people over 60 that you refer to, will have a rough time if this bill is implemented. On the plan they "already have", I doubt that they are denied life saving care in the name of "social efficiency" and "sustainability", because those concepts are in the original version of the proposed bill. I actually have read the entire bill and also the changes that were made during subcommittee. I think you need to read it again...the entire thing not the first 10 or 20 pages. I can tell you haven't based on your comment back. It is easy to pretend when you are talking to an unaware person, but I've actually read and have a desire to know more before passing judgement on it. Because the bill says you can't go complain to them if/when they deny your hip. You cannot challenge their decision, you cannot appeal it, and you will not even be able to get your congressman to help you.

Once the federal bean counters decide, statistically speaking, you don't have that long to live anyways, you will become a waste of the limited resources. You'll never get your hip.

Our current system isn't perfect, but at least you have options.

I understand your concern.

I was just a child when medicare went into affect. i believe the idea was to guarantee a minimum level of health insurance/care for the retired.

This demographic uses a hugh amount of our health care resources and medicare is headed for bankruptcy.

If that occurs, imagine health insurance premiums if the aged are returned to the general health insurance pool.

I can imagine the general citizenry demanding health care rationing based on cost/benifit analysis.

That's very naive. If you are over a certain age, or have other health problems that shorten your life expectancy, why would they invest in a new hip for you, when you are going to within the next few years anyway? Provisions for this type of rationing are already written into the current versions of the bill.
