It would've been a flawless performance had Paul layed off the awful, clammy, clashing accidentals he was using in an attempt to sound like a banjo. It distracted from the whole thing and ruined an otherwise perfect performance. From 59:00 - 1:40 and from 2:25 - until the end of the song he is using shit notes, he's too loud and covering up Landreth's slide playing.
There isn't a week that goes by without me listening to this version. I've passed it along to many friends. These guys just look like they are totally into performing this song. Watch Pul get taken over by the music a few times. Just cracks me up.
@pclinn Its a hilarious song about a drunken rampage w/ a shotgun, shooting Ken, Barbie and Skippy on Sunday morning. Someone needs to upload it to YT.
For my money that's one of the smartest, funniest verses in all of rock 'n' roll. I've seen John many times, but I've never heard this song performed better than it was that night in 1988 on Letterman. It made me go out the next day and buy the album. And much credit goes to one of the most melodic slide guitar players out there, Sonny Landreth.
Was in high school when this came out . Been a fan ever since .

I saw him live after he did the rehab thing - and he was still totally in love with performing, totally joyously rocked it with the audience!

I kind of wish I had been born, when Hiatt was on the show. I have to say, half of what they pick for Letterman sucks now.
This is, however, my favorite Hiatt song, so it's a great find!
