They needed to kill off Sven so the girl (whatever her name was) could take over the blue lion and give toy manufacturers a wider market for toy sales..
hmm if sven is death in japanese version, i wonder how the series will finish, cause he appear at the end of us version. i wanna ask, is the japanese episodes different from us version or not? only sven's death ofcourse...
@coooba94 It's different - both storylines. There are many differences. For instance Zarcon, Lotor, and Haggar are killed at the end of the Golion story. The Voltron version as you know, they were not killed. The result is Golion ended in episode 52 while Voltron ended in episode 72. Remember since the main bad guys didn't die, there were more episodes for Voltron and they even added Merla to the story.

why is written about Sven "will never see him again" , he appears at the last episodes of voltron, in the english version ofcourse. that's very interesting in japanese anime - making a funeral, i wonder how kids feel watched it.
@cmqguy In the North American version Sven is said to be badly wounded and needs to go to a medical planet for healing. They then bring *Sven* back (In Go Lion it's Sven's younger brother) But for Voltron they combine the two characters. The brother also dies in the conclusion of Go Lion killing Lotor with him but in Voltron they created a second season which is 100% unique and Sven is redrawn to look more like how he did in the first 5 episodes.
@brandoman79 Thanks for the information. We North Americans and not wanting to show sadness in our cartoons. That would have been devastating for me as a kid to watch I think, lol and many other kids here in North America.
@thegodofq Well, on US TV back in '84, you couldn't have anyone get killed off in a cartoon, especially a main character. Unfortunately that's still mostly true today. IMO, they should've killed off Sven for Voltron, educate the young viewers by showing them a bit of reality, show them that sometimes even the good guys die. That was done a year later when Robotech aired, with Roy Fokker's death.
@Akira625 but didn't TOEI go back on the whole killing deal when Shirogane's fangirls cried foul? That resulted in a stupid "twin brother" excuse later on.
Sven getting "sent to hospital" only to return for a Big Heroes Ending near the end was one of the two things Voltron got right. That, and the awesome, kickass, epic theme.
@romxxii I don't know if there was any kind of outcry when that episode originally aired, but it seems the producers didn't make much of a secret about his exit from the Golion team. I noticed something when I watched the opening & closing sequences for the first 6 episodes: Shirogane appears in the opening credits, but he's nowhere to be seen in the closing credits, the princess is always there in his place.
@Akira625 Deaths of major characters on the heroes' side is nothing new to Japanese audiences. Back in the late 70s, early 80s, with giant robot shows like Invincible Superman Zambot 3, Voltes V, Mobile Suit Gundam, Space Runaway Ideon, and Aura Battler Dunbine, heroes dropped like flies! So, it was the end of sugarcoated storylines and the start of darker epics.
@thegodofq Go Lion wasn't a popular anime in Japan, and World Events I think that's the name of the production team the bought the rights to Go Lion brought it to North America and edited it and rebrand it as Voltron, like wise Vehicle Voltron is a total separate anime in Japan with nothing to do with Go Lion but they made that Vehicle Voltron and to tie the two they had Chip and Pidge be brothers, the third anime they got was going to be another Voltron but test groups didn't like it
Granted I haven't watched Voltron since it was on TV, but I thought there was an episode in the English version where Sven came back for a time. In hindsight I'm sure it was just an episode in a different sequence from the Japanese version.
its ok for japanese (and us asians) to tackle about death in stories and cartoons because its accepted as a part of life...the reason westerners did not air it is because they were so ignorant not to explain it to kid thats its part of life....and its a god damn cartoon...theres no need to be so freakin' affected when a character dies in a freakin' cartoon...sigh
Yeah, I forgot that Sven dies in the original Japanese version. Some of you anime experts out there; plz correct me if I'm wrong...in the English dub, wasn't EVERTHING redone? i.e. Music, sound-effects as well as voices?
I wonder what it would have been like if shirogane (Sven) was never ACTUALLY killed. Sven was my favorite of the original voltron pilots, and I think it would have been cool if he remained as the pilot of blue lion for the entire show.
0:49, i know both the opening and closing themes for Golion are no good, but the music you hear at this point when Kogane (Keith), Chibi (Pidge), Kurogane (Lance) and Seido (Hunk) salute their fallen comrade Shirogane (Sven), the music sounds fittingly dramatic, not matter how dated it is.
To be honest, even though I enjoy voltron, I like Shirogane more than I like Sven. In my eyes, they are two separate people. It's not that I dislike what Voltron did to him but his character and personality are completely different in voltron. In Golion his character fit the role perfectly. If they kept that personality and had him survive it would have been great. but as it stands now, I was always upset that Sven suddenly sucked when he returned. Now I know why. Sho sucked, Shirogane was cool!
Sven was the man. You don't fuck with Sven unless you're gonna CHEAT like that old bitch did with her cat and monster.
Yeah, I know his name isn't really Sven, but being called "Sven" and kicking ass just seems like the perfect combination. Fuck everyone except the dude named SVEN.
that wasn't part of the japanese series the japanese one ended after episode 52 everything after episode 52 was made for the american market with help from toei
Voltron/Go-Lion is one of those things were the original and the dub have good qualities. I think Go-Lion has a much stronger, more dramatic plot lion, sacrifice and heroics means so much more when life and limb are actually at stake. But the American dub has a far better soundtrack and it's voice acting for the most part (Sven was still a little over the top) was pretty good. I own the Voltron DVD sets and look forward to getting the Go-Lion set when it comes out too.
can we just say this...there are some things that are better left the way they are and some things that different cultures have made better? Some Japanese anime shouldn't be touched by anything, but this was one that the america didn't hurt.
Thank you for sharing. I too liked this show when I was younger. Even though a girl, there was something about science fiction/fantasy that I've always loved...
I wanted to learn more about the Go-Lion Voltron was developed from, and I'm glad I've found some footage here on YouTube.
Okay, what's the hype about a new Voltron or a Voltron (Lion) remake?
I agree. And I don't normmally like many things, truth be told, that my country American-izes (for example: My girlfriend is French and living abroad, and I order a lot of French films off Amazon as opposed to other things).
As I've bought all of the Voltron DVD boxsets here to re-live my childhood, I've looked up the Go-Lion footage. Personally Voltron: Defender of the Universe has better music, editing, and voice-over talent that isn't ugly to listen to. It's a much better Senti altogether.
I like the storyline of Vehicle Voltron. Maybe "the fight for a new world" is typically Ami declamatory, but the multitude of characters are great.
By the way I´m a fan of the good old animes and American TV shows. If I had the time and the money I would collecting all DVD boxsets on the open market. Excuse my School English.
I like the older television my country used to produce instead of newer ones myself (it's mostly Reality Garbage on North American television), especially the '80s. And yeah, older Anime from Japan. I love they're mini Cultureal Imperalism of exporting most of it's Anime.
I plan to also get the Vehicale Voltron once it's released here as well. I have a French girlfriend who lives abroad so I'm also fluent in French, so no worries. Your English is fine my friend. :D

Most of you cry babies out there that complain about Voltron being edited, probably don't have kids. I would't want my kid watching this stuff. If you want to see violence go to Iraq.
in italia solo pochi fortunati hanno potuto vedere la versione di golion tutti gli altri hanno visto quella schifezza di voltron completamente censurato che schifo
The American Version of Anime: Where soldiers are robots, guns are lasers, nobody dies, and even when the 'Voltron Force' are crying/laughing/whatnot, they have the emotional range of toasters.
No. First there was King of Beasts: Go-Lion. Then there was the North American (St. Louis based) English re-dub. And then the rest of the world got they're own dubbing in they're native language usually as Voltron, so yes, he exists. Most of the Anglo-Phonic world knows the mecha robot as Voltorn: Defender of the Universe, not as Go-Lion but that is cool.
I personally find Go-Lion footage dull & violent; the Japanese phrases pretty ugly, but to each they're own.
I'm not a fan of censorship in any form, but i really LIKE the Sven changes in the Voltron dub. I always thought keeping him alive and having him turn back up on Planet Doom was a better idea.
hero tv aired voltron already, but its the american version they had aired since the title is "voltron" not "golion",i wish they will adapt the japanese storyline where sven was really killed not went outside the planet for recovery...
I have to agree to a degree american sucks for cuttin shit out but if your think about it ,that was a long time ago so im not mad . I also love what america did with it as far as the music its so spooky and the voice actors were better to me. I also can tell that when they talk its bad traslation but hell I was a kid and never noticed Lol
The US version of Volton sucks ass. Sven recovers? Gimme a break. He got fucked up! The death of Nanny, Amok and Lotor are edited by those shitmouths too.
I do remember seeing that in a early American Episode that Sven died, but when it was repeated, they did show Sven alive and well. Censorship sucks!!!
The Sven you saw alive was his brother in the Jap version, they made him Sven in the American version, to keep him from "dying" in the American version. They were told not to kill him off for the American audience. Had this show aired today, he would have died.
I guess that's because American studios saw Sven (Shirogane) as a very special character. And since they dubbed this in English and edited it considerably, they thought that it was the best choice to have Sven return rather than die as his death would've sadden younger audiences.
That's odd, because Roy was just about as charismatic as Sven and his death was almost more devastating (mostly because he lives longer than Shirogane in his respective series).
Unfortunately, Shirogane's brother, Sho, also dies in battle. But unlike his brother, whose death was in vain, Sho dies an honerable death; he fought bravely until the end.
And that sort of ' thinking ' is why Americans is stuck with dumb, juvenile, CGI debaucheries. U.S.A. won't be able to make something like a serious WW2 era cartoon flick with that state of mind. No, it can't. Unless it's a ' comedy ' AGAIN. Mendicancy wins.
The two shows were dubbed by two different dubbing companies whose producers had different intentions. With "Robotech", I think I heard somewhere that Carl Macek wanted to aim his show at a slightly older audience to try and preserve the realism of it. He was aware of what was normally done to anime brought to the States and didn't want to necessarily do the same thing to "SDF Macross". The editing that was done there was primarily to get "Macross" up over the 65 episode limit.
According to Media Blasters, after the recent batch of the classic north american Voltron boxsets are out (the final will be th black lion set), yes they're will be a Japanese language Go-Lion series.Uncesored, finally. Hope I helped...
because the one that appeards like sven its suppose to be his brother or someone that looks like him. for that time when cartoons were not allow to be so violent they had to edit alot, including religious stuff in it.
I always wondered why he never came back if he was just at some doctor, even if it was far away. I always figured they had just censored out a death scene...I guess I was right >.> bloody censorship.
Does anyone know where I can find more episodes of voltron. I got all the episodes on tape from someone on ebay but they're such a bad recording that most of the episodes you can't even watch.
It sure would be nice to have these epsisodes uncensored and subtitled. Maybe someday someone will be generous enough to do that :) Thanks for the vid!
Honerva (Hagar in US) killed him, in the same episode they showed the fight, but the US had him as "injured." They played it off like Sho was actually him with the other Princess. Ironically that's another case of "injury" since both of them die too in GoLion.
They needed to kill off Sven so the girl (whatever her name was) could take over the blue lion and give toy manufacturers a wider market for toy sales..

I'm not a fan of censorship in any form, but i really LIKE the Sven changes in the Voltron dub. I always thought keeping him alive and having him turn back up on Planet Doom was a better idea.

i like the american version better.. hope the american version airs on hero tv philippines
mrpogi 4 years ago
hero tv aired voltron already, but its the american version they had aired since the title is "voltron" not "golion",i wish they will adapt the japanese storyline where sven was really killed not went outside the planet for recovery...

The death of Nanny, Amok and Lotor are edited by those shitmouths too.
deconomou 5 years ago
Oh dear, looks like he didn't recover after all...

I'm sorry I liked Sven So I'm glad that I saw the american version first
Camu2000 5 years ago
I do remember seeing that in a early American Episode that Sven died, but when it was repeated, they did show Sven alive and well. Censorship sucks!!!
Heftron 5 years ago
The Sven you saw alive was his brother in the Jap version, they made him Sven in the American version, to keep him from "dying" in the American version. They were told not to kill him off for the American audience. Had this show aired today, he would have died.
thejoint25 5 years ago
And yet they didn't cut Roy's death out of Robotech, which was released around the same time as Voltron.
Armetius 4 years ago
I guess that's because American studios saw Sven (Shirogane) as a very special character. And since they dubbed this in English and edited it considerably, they thought that it was the best choice to have Sven return rather than die as his death would've sadden younger audiences.
MDthornton83 3 years ago
That's odd, because Roy was just about as charismatic as Sven and his death was almost more devastating (mostly because he lives longer than Shirogane in his respective series).
Armetius 3 years ago
I agree with you 100%. That is what my theory would be too. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has that theory. By the way Sven is one of my faves.
JessieDaughtry 3 years ago
Shirogane's brother appeared much later on in the anime. Voltron simply had it that Sven had recovered from his injuries and returned to piloting.
FurnaxIkki 3 years ago

Voltron is a censored and watered down version of Golion.
I saw the first Golion episodes but when "Voltron" went in Italy, I can't see it because the difference is too much .
Think this: in the original serial , the fives are the earth survivors ,in the american serial they are ...space explorers!!

According to Media Blasters, after the recent batch of the classic north american Voltron boxsets are out (the final will be th black lion set), yes they're will be a Japanese language Go-Lion series.Uncesored, finally. Hope I helped...

If he died in episode six, how was he back in the later episodes, including the last one? Could this be from the last episode?
dougmatlock 5 years ago
That was his brother.
Dynared 5 years ago
because the one that appeards like sven its suppose to be his brother or someone that looks like him. for that time when cartoons were not allow to be so violent they had to edit alot, including religious stuff in it.

Hagar killed him.

Is this why the girl came into the Voltron force?
hootyhaha 5 years ago
Exactly. With Sven/Shirogane dead, they just have to have a fourth member. And Alura/Falla was the best choice to fill his shoes.
MDthornton83 3 years ago
in the american series, he became an ambassador to some planet, series 2 (which was made only for america) showed shiogane (sven) alive and well.
