this is the most wonderful rendition of this Study I've ever eard...and I listened to quite a few !
Giulietta beatifully "pulls out" the music which remains so often hidden in many interpretations of this Study. Her rubatos are just absolutely relevant, her pianissimos are also just great (and, by the way, much more difficult to achieve with such a limpidity than the mezzoforte that so many other (even very good performers) keep as the "bottom line".
@racingracing Exactly. While I don't care for a few things she does, I know that she's capable of playing it whatever way she wants. That she plays it the way she does is by her own choice, not lack of ability, and I respect her right to play it as she pleases.
@koalaswrath Perhaps you should read more carefully. I only commented on how quickly she went to the keys ( to substantiate my point, I timed Kissin, Valentina and this woman and I was correct..on average). I find discussions about who's the greatest to be pointless, particularly for performers I haven't heard in person. I know Valentina and Di Wu pretty well and nothing pianistic seems to be beyond them, but I've seen each of them perform brilliantly and not so brilliantly.
@floydrharper What? Pretty girl's got you mesmerized. Talented as she is, she's far from being in Kissin's league. You want to see fast check out Katsaris, Czifra, Hamelin, Gibbons... Kissin! Hell, Lang Lang!!! You want a pretty girl, you have to see Valentina Lisitsa's skills. Ms. Koch is still a diamond in the rough. She's probably still a student. I can't believe you compared her to Kissin.
I can't imagine how anyone could insult this! To play this piece at all is an amazing accomplishment in itself. I think it was played beautifully with passion and precision. Well done!
@3screamingkids That's absolute nonsense. Whatever you think of her performance decisions, she is doing exactly what she wants to do with tremendous security and finesse. She is in full command. She plays like the pro she is (and I don't know her, never even heard of her), certainly NOT like a student. You are right about only one thing, she's no Martha. There is only one Martha. Is no one else supposed to play at all?
I'm sorry, you're right. you know I am italian, I speack italian portugues, spanish france and Latin too... and right now a very poor english... forgive me my ignorance teacher,
BUT
do not forget one thing: WHEN YOU WRITE THE NAME OF ROMA REMEMBER TO DO IT WITH CAPITAL "R", thak you.
i will take this as a hysteria attack because you are so depressed of not being a woman...
and I want you to be concerned, because if you treat women like this you won't go far in your life...
maybe is the fact that you haven't got a woman the reason of your depression? because if i't like that you should consult a psychologist (or maybe a psychiatrist) and he or SHE will find a solution to your existential problems
if you are happy for my poor english keep smiling.... you told me you know Latin, well read this and merry christmass culture-man: "Risus abundat in ore stultorum".. and touch your mother, is cold!
very nice, good technique. I think people underestimate how difficult this etude is; it's easy to play this badly but very hard to play it well. Musically, I didn't like the rubato in a couple of places but I guess that was just spontaneous. Btw, why the redistribution of notes at the end?
She is a very talented pianist, and she definitely plays this excellently. My only complaint is that the melody is being lost in the accompaniment and is not distinctive enough.
@elieltanr , I like that about her performance. It seems to sing more. I like her performance on this peice over than some of my favorite pianists, save horowitz, which is absolutely phenomenal.
@hermease then again, to each his own, personally, i'd like a steadier tempo and rhythmn to this particular etude. Rubato is just the elastic extension of not value, but must be compensated by the other notes within the bar. Too much rubato, and writing the piece another note value would save us all the trouble. Thats what I think about it.
Anyone can be a virtuoso with sheer practice, but those with musicality, appropriate interpretation and technique are rare.
@elieltanr I agree with you completely. With most studies, if one were going to perform it, one would have to make it a bit more exciting, rather than just keep it as a technical exerciseThis, however, is a little too much. She still has a very delightful interpretation and technical skill. Chopin himself couldn't help but pour his genius into something as bland as studies. To me, it is the apotheosis of frenzied emotion.
@marklaidlaw1993 To me, interpretation of a piece requires one to understand a composer's point of view and appropriate the performance of the piece. even then there are marks of an individual's perspective and character that defines one from another. Not just for the sake of performing something in a 'different' way, and not sound 'cliche', but to justify a piece in its own right.
She's really good, but those little additions she put in went a little too far and sorta changed the peice, not to my liking. Overall, though, she's very, very good.
Wow, how ofter do you see such control and expression and "the right tone", all at once? She knows how to dose things so she does not have to work to hard to make the forte sound contrasted and impacting.
I really like her interpretation of this piece. The next Chopin Etude I am going to learn could be this one. I just finished Etude Op.25 No.12. Look at my channel for my vids

LOl i like how she emediately played it without waiting for the clap to fade..LOL
yohana4825 1 year ago
Two subtleties I absolutely love about her playing:
Physical Performance 1:07 measure 42
She brings out the climax of Chopin's accented contrary motion in measure 42 with her head in a professionally appealing manner.
1:37-1:42 measure 63-66. Rubato brings out intriguing phrasing in the LH that leads very nicely into the climax at 1:49, measure 70 into 71.
Compare her treatment to that of Vladimir Horowitz' @ 1:02 and 1:34 respectively.

Very good! Although i think she uses a bit too much rubato sometimes. It has to be played like blasted furiously out of a cannon!

you call it rubato.. but imo she can't play it faster
