The Democratic party fought to keep black people as slaves. In the 1950s, President Eisenhower (a Republican) wrote a Civil Rights Bill that was supported by every Republican in the Senate but the bill was blocked by Senate Democrats, like LBJ, and Robert Byrd (a KKK member).

Then when LBJ was the President in 1964 he signed into law the same bill that Eisenhower wrote.
