I used to play the single of this when I worked for a small FM in East TN. I teared up ever. single. time. It's just a beautiful tune, and I'm so glad that RF shared it with the rest of the world.
I've Always thought that Radney and Terry McBride from McBride & the Ride would sound Awesome together... anyone else? Both GREAT talents!!!! miss hearing them both on the airwaves...
Love that there is a video to this song! I was in charge of videos at Arista in the 90s and always loved doing Rad vids. Even hired USC film students to do a couple as projects (A Fine Line and Making It Up). See What You Want To See is still my favorite album of any artist. Get it if u don't or haven't heard it!
A friend of mine just lost her nephew to Leukemia a couple weeks ago! Today would have been his 7th birthday. She posted this song on facebook and had to come here to favorite it! What a wonderful song!
Is this from 'Transatlantic Sessions' ? If so, does anyone know which session this is from? Unfortunately Amazon doesnt list the contents of a lot of the series which is a real pia.
out of all the videos / songs on youtube, THIS is the one, the one that gets me every time, I miss my family so much, half the world away, tears start to flow at sweet dreams......
@PaulYoudell I saw him in Atlanta this fall and he does it as his final encore. He talks about how this was a lulliby he put on a tape so his son could listen to it when he moved to france.
This is a beautiful song, I lost my son when he was 21. Had the whole world ahead of him and now he turns another chapter just not hear on this earth.
God Bless those who feel the pain of losing a child.
I can relate...I lost my Daughter when she was very young ...I've spoken to her each and through my tears, and prayers each and everyday since... Please never take those you care about for granted as they can become Angels at anytime ..
I'm very sorry to hear that from all of you, but actually his son who he wrote this for did not die. What happened was he got divorced and his wife remarried and moved to France, where her new husband was from, along with the son. He never saw his son again afetr that and he was of course very sad and it led him to writing this song
You are mostly right. He did see his son when he got the chance. This last summer, Radney's son moved back home to Texas to go to school. Radney's got a new DVD out about his latest album where you see him and his son playing guitar together. Really cool.
His album See What You Want to See is amazing. I got it 10 years ago but now it's out of print. Worth seeking out. Radney is a great writer and underrated artist. Loved his songs from the Foster and Lloyd days too.
awesome. this is the message i want my son to hear when he goes to bed each night he is away from me at his moms, which has now become more and more due to mistakes by judge little. it is very sad.
It's just you can feel all the emotions Radney was feeling when he wrote this song. You can tell he was heartbroken but he has to do the dad thing of faking a smile so the kid doesn't feel guilty. Just a great song, it's in the daily rotation I sing to get my nephew to sleep
@mnnorthcountrygirl1 would be amazing huh? I agree... Radney is SO SO talented, and Jerry Douglas is an icon... I love to hear anyone can play that can PLAY and that plays and sings from the "heart"... can't beat that...
@mnnorthcountrygirl1 Hey there, I just wanted to say, I had the pleasure ( as another musician I'd really almost use the word "blessing") of growing up.. not only in DeL Rio, but going to Church with Radney and his family, I remember so clearly watching Rad sing @ times and you just knew he was blessed.. what your seeing is EXACTLY who the guy is. He's a "class act" all the way. Allow me to quote a small newspaper article from years ago, "This one's built to last."
So much better to hear it from yourself. It's more believable. It's my favourite song in the world, very popular in Ireland since it appeared on Transatlantic Sessions. Thanks for the music.
I believe Radney's wife left him and moved to France with his son. He wrote the song for his son and recorded it on a tape that he brought along to France. He didn't consider recording it until many years later when it was suggested by others. Beautiful song.
jrossz71, I'm wondering if this happened recently. I saw Radney at an event where his son was attending pre-school. I believe it was late summer in 07.
Anyway, I've always enjoyed his music. He's not a mainstream artist and I think he "likes it like that."
Ikie, thanks. Excellent video. Yeah, I cried. I never had a kid of my own but I once baby-sat a 6-month old "little man." We were alone. I made the "mistake" of looking at his face while he slept in my arms! The little bugger did a number on my MIND! (He was asleep, you see. He didn't DO anything intentionally. But it was kinda mystical, magical or hypnotic! I was "spellbound"! I hope you understand.)
This is beautiful. Why have I never heard this before? I thought I knew all of Radney's songs. Does anybody know the story behind it? I thought about my little boys and cried, I guess I could cry some more if I knew the story.
Agreed. However there are a ton of artists who have taken songs from Radney and done great with them. Sar Evans and Keith Urban took songs of his to #1 on the charts. Radney, IMO, is the greatest songwriter of this generation.
I first heard this song when I took my daughter to see The Dixie Chicks. I was absolutely blown away by it. It made me sob...so lovely. I found that Radney had written the song.
From what I understand, it was an open letter to his son.
Radney wrote this song for his son who was leaving to go to France with his mother. His love for his son and his knowledge of children's literature shine through and make this a truly remarkable song!
I never knew that Radney had written this tune. I first heard it recorded by the Dixie Chicks. As usual, Radney adds his own unique quality to anything he writes, sings, or both.
That is awesome news!!!!!! I'm so excited! Somebody else had uploaded the Radney video with Rosanne Cash awhile back, and ever since then, I've been hoping it would eventually be out on DVD! Do you know if they will make CD's as well? I really love this song. Radney is amazing!!!!
I've been in touch with the film makers - Pelicula Films. The picture is slightly different to my earlier post. They intend releasing a "best of" for series one and series 2 sometime next year. The current series (series 3) is to be released in it's entirety within the next day or so.
