Great video as always. Would you consider doing this fly using the method you demonstrated on the Fiery Brown Hopper for the deer hair, or is this the best way?
You could tye this pattern in the same style as the fiery brown hopper, but in the bigger sizes you may have to tye in a couple of bunches of deer hair, the first being longer than the second so that when you pull back the deer hair it will reach the back of the fly and form a nice shape.. Let me know how you get on?
I've fished using the original sedgehog pattern as described below last season, it was pure entertainment and a cracking fly. I had some great fish on them, I'm interested to see your variant, great video's too....I shall be nipping back and forth from time to time. Thanks for posting them, great to see! Rob.
I loved this pattern as soon as I saw it. I changed the colours to adapt it to our sedges in western Canada. Made my floss and tippet green to imitate an egg sac. I am looking forward to using it next year. Thank you for sharing it!
excellent pattern davie,i agree, would be a bit of a bugger to tie though, this will need all my attention, and a wee drop of black bush to calm the nerves, tee hee.
It is a variant, the original was just called a sedgehog. A typical dressing would be
natural coloured deer hair like roe for the wing, claret or brown or olive seal's fur for the body and a natural or dyed hen or cock hackle tyed in front, a very simple and effective pattern.
