You cant alawys use a pen, I think they changed that after everyone figured that one out. If you should happen to lose your key, an easier way to get your lock off is to get a rod saw blade at any hardware store forabout 5 bucks for your hacksaw and take about 3 minutes and just cut it off. Goes right though 'em. Yep, it sure does. go try it. Like butter. Really does.

Also Dremel out the 2 cylinder retaining Pins and you can replace the crap kryptoite cylinder with another type maybe abloy or a Gem lock (Replace it with a cam lock).

actually a pen works on many seven-pin tumbler systems and since a friend showed me how to open a similar bike lock with a pen over 15 years ago, I can assure you that it goes beyond one type of lock. In fact the company that got all the bad attention was Kryptonite... which is what was shown in this video.

*In a bike shop* being the important part: We used the cheap jack out of a Subaru in order to get a U-lock off of somebody's frame. It looked a bit more elegant than this video, but was quite easy. The moral to this story, buy ON-GUARD locks or the higher-end Kryptonites because they have a dual-locking mechanism which does not allow you to bend the end out, as seen in the video above.

That's why I "fill up" my u lock with the frame and tire, so there is no room to fit a jack into. But any lock can be broken or picked, all a lock does is buy you time away from your bike, and act as a deterrent. I also use a cable lock together with my new Kryptonite U-lock. (with new flat keyhole design)
